What a blast furnace does
The blast furnace is a faster alternative to the regular furnace when your input is metallic. Its recipe list is limited by design: it accepts ores, raw-metal items, and metal tools, weapons, armor, and related equipment. When a recipe is supported, one item takes 100 game ticks, or 5 seconds, to finish.

A regular furnace remains the general-purpose option. It handles the broad range of ordinary furnace recipes, including food and non-metal blocks, while taking 200 game ticks, or 10 seconds, per item. The blast furnace therefore improves waiting time and throughput rather than reducing the fuel required for each item.
Blast furnace recipe
You need a crafting table with a 3×3 grid and these ingredients:

3×3 crafting pattern
Arrange the ingredients in this exact layout:

In other words, fill every top slot with an iron ingot, put iron ingots in the left and right slots of the middle row, place the furnace in the center, and fill the entire bottom row with smooth stone. The output slot will produce one blast furnace.
Making the required smooth stone
Smooth stone is a separate block from both stone and cobblestone. If you only have cobblestone, smelt it in a regular furnace to make stone, then smelt that stone again to obtain smooth stone. Once you have three smooth-stone blocks, combine them with the five iron ingots and furnace in the pattern above.
What can a blast furnace smelt?
Use the blast furnace for recipes whose input belongs to one of three broad groups:

- Ores: eligible ore blocks and ore-based furnace inputs.
- Raw metals: raw iron, raw gold, and other raw-metal inputs supported by the game’s recipe list.
- Metal equipment: metal tools, weapons, armor, and related metal equipment that can be smelted into a material output.
The exact output depends on the recipe. Ore and raw-metal processing produces the corresponding smelted metal, while eligible worn or unwanted equipment produces the material specified by that equipment’s recipe. Check the item’s recipe in your recipe book or test one item before loading a large batch.
Ancient debris and netherite progression
Ancient debris is a notable blast-furnace input. Smelting it in either a regular furnace or a blast furnace produces netherite scrap. A blast furnace is useful here because it cuts the processing time for each supported item from 10 seconds to 5 seconds, helping when you are processing several debris blocks after a Nether mining trip.
What a blast furnace cannot smelt
The block is not a faster replacement for every furnace recipe. It rejects food and other non-metal furnace inputs. For example, it will not cook meat or other food, smelt sand, or perform ordinary stone and other general block recipes. Those jobs still require a regular furnace.

If an item will not enter the blast furnace’s input slot, that behavior is normally a recipe limitation rather than a fuel or placement problem. Move food, sand, stone, and similar non-metal inputs to a regular furnace instead of trying different fuels.
Blast furnace speed versus a regular furnace
For recipes supported by both blocks, the timing is straightforward:

The 100-tick and 200-tick values are game-time measurements: 20 game ticks equal one second, so 100 ticks equal 5 seconds and 200 ticks equal 10 seconds. The shorter cycle applies only after the blast furnace accepts the recipe.

What the speed difference means for a batch
For a batch of 64 eligible items, the theoretical processing time is 64 × 5 seconds, or 320 seconds (5 minutes 20 seconds), in a blast furnace. The same batch takes 640 seconds (10 minutes 40 seconds) in a regular furnace. These figures describe continuous processing with the furnace supplied and no interruptions; they do not change the fuel amount consumed per item.
Does a blast furnace use less fuel?
No. A blast furnace halves the cooking time, but fuel consumption per item is unchanged. You spend the same fuel allowance to process one supported item as you would in a regular furnace. The benefit is that the furnace becomes available for the next item sooner.
This distinction matters when planning an automated or high-volume setup. A blast furnace can clear a queue faster, but it does not make a finite stack of fuel process more items. To increase the number of items you can smelt before refueling, you need more fuel, not merely a faster furnace.

Where to use one in your base
Place the block where metal inputs accumulate. A location near mining operations is convenient because ores and raw metals can be loaded immediately. It also fits near an iron or gold farm, or beside a trading setup that produces metal inputs in volume.

- Farm output: keep the blast furnace beside an iron or gold farm’s collection point.
- Trading area: process eligible metal equipment or raw-metal inputs close to where they arrive.
- General smelting room: pair it with at least one regular furnace so non-metal recipes and food do not interrupt metal processing.
Because the blast furnace has a narrower recipe list, a mixed-material storage room should not replace every regular furnace with blast furnaces. The practical arrangement is specialization: reserve blast furnaces for metal queues and regular furnaces for food, sand, stone, and other unsupported recipes.
How to troubleshoot a blast furnace that will not work
The recipe will not craft
- Open a crafting table rather than your inventory’s smaller crafting grid.
- Verify that the center slot contains a regular furnace.
- Count five iron ingots: three across the top row and one on each side of the middle row.
- Confirm that all three bottom-row items are smooth stone, not cobblestone or ordinary stone.
- Make sure every ingredient is in the exact positions shown in the recipe pattern.
The input will not go into the blast furnace
- Identify whether the item is an ore, raw metal, or metal equipment.
- If it is food, sand, stone, or another non-metal furnace input, move it to a regular furnace.
- For an unfamiliar item, check its recipe-book entry or test a single unit before preparing a full batch.
The furnace is slower than expected
- Confirm that the recipe is one the blast furnace supports; unsupported items cannot receive the 5-second cycle.
- Remember that the stated speed is 100 game ticks per item, not an instant batch operation.
- Check that fuel is available. The blast furnace is faster only while it has both an accepted input and fuel.
Blast furnace or regular furnace?
Choose based on the input queue rather than speed alone:

Bedrock add-on and recipe-data note
In Bedrock add-on data, furnace recipe definitions can use station tags that include blast_furnace. This is a data-schema mechanism for identifying which station can run a recipe; it does not mean every recipe becomes valid in the normal game. A recipe still needs an appropriate input and output definition, and the ordinary blast-furnace limits remain relevant to gameplay.

- Gather five iron ingots, one regular furnace, and three smooth stone.
- Craft at a 3×3 table with the furnace in the center and smooth stone across the bottom.
- Use the finished block for ores, raw metals, and eligible metal equipment.
- Expect 100 game ticks (5 seconds) per accepted item.
- Keep a regular furnace for food, sand, stone, and other non-metal recipes.
- Do not expect lower fuel use: fuel consumed per item is unchanged.
- For ancient debris, either furnace works; the blast furnace produces netherite scrap in half the time.
The blast furnace is therefore a throughput tool, not an all-purpose furnace and not a fuel-saving device. Craft it when your base regularly handles metal inputs, then keep regular furnaces available for everything outside that specialty.
