Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted The Forest servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
To make a reliable local backup of a The Forest dedicated server, stop every process that can write to the save, identify the active save directory and slot, copy the complete slot structure, and store the copy on a separate disk or removable drive. Do not copy a single recent-looking file or only one player-character folder: multiplayer saves divide shared-world state and character data, so a partial copy may not restore the world your group expects.
The exact directory depends on whether you run the server yourself or rent a managed instance. A configured saveFolderPath or -savefolderpath can move the save, and a command-line value takes precedence over the matching setting in Server.cfg. Record the active slot and initType before copying so you can restore the same world without starting a new one.

What does a complete Forest server backup need to contain?
A recoverable backup is the entire active server-save directory, including its slot structure and all surrounding files. The world is not represented by one file that can safely be picked out by its modified time. Hosted multiplayer also separates shared world state from client-character data; copying only a character folder can leave the buildings, map progress, or other players’ state behind.
Keep the server configuration details with the archive even when Server.cfg is stored separately from the save. The values for saveFolderPath, slot, and initType tell you where the archive must go and how the server should load it. A useful archive label includes the server name, date, and slot, for example Forest-Coop-2026-10-27-slot3.

What should I do before copying the save?
- Stop all writers. Exit the game and stop the dedicated-server process. On a managed host, use the control panel’s stop command and wait until the status is fully stopped before opening FTP or SFTP. A copy made while the server is autosaving can contain files from different moments.
- Find the authoritative configuration. Open
Server.cfgand inspect the launch command. If both contain a save-path setting, use the command-line value because it overrides the config-file value. Write down the configuredslotandinitType. - Choose independent storage. Have enough free space for the complete folder and its future versions. A second internal disk is fast, but it is not independent from a computer-wide failure; an external drive or removable USB device can be disconnected after verification.
- Do not edit the live directory. Copy from the active location to an archive destination. Never rename, sort, or delete files in the live save while the server is stopped unless you are deliberately performing a restore.
Where are The Forest saves stored?
Use the path that matches the way you play. These locations are starting points, not substitutes for checking the active server configuration.
| Use case | Typical location | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows single-player or client saves | %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForest |
This is the normal Windows game-save namespace; it is separate from a dedicated server’s save area. |
| Proton or Steam Deck | The equivalent SKSTheForest path inside the Steam compatdata242760 prefix |
Open the prefix used by the installation rather than assuming the Windows user path exists on the host system. |
| Self-hosted Windows dedicated server | The generated configuration is at C:UsersUSERAppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsServer.cfg; the default save arrangement uses the same SKSTheForestDedicatedServer namespace. |
Follow saveFolderPath if it is set. The configured directory is authoritative. |
| Managed multiplayer hosting | The provider’s exposed Multiplayer save directory, reached through its file manager, FTP, or SFTP | Provider layouts differ. Download the complete slot folder shown by that host instead of assuming a local Windows path. |
For a self-hosted server, the dsServer.cfg location is a configuration reference, not proof that the world is stored in that exact subfolder. A custom saveFolderPath can point elsewhere. For a rented server, the control panel’s file browser is the best indication of the active root.
How do I back up a self-hosted Windows server?
Use this procedure when the dedicated server runs on your own Windows machine.
- Stop the server and game. Close The Forest and stop the dedicated-server executable or service. Confirm that no server process remains in Task Manager and that no console is still writing autosave messages.
- Open the configuration. Navigate to
C:UsersUSERAppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestDedicatedServerdsServer.cfg, replacingUSERwith the Windows account that generated the configuration. Also inspect the shortcut, batch file, service definition, or other launch command used to start the server. - Resolve the active path. If
saveFolderPathappears in the configuration, use that directory. If the launch command contains-savefolderpath, use its directory even whenServer.cfgnames another one, because the command-line setting wins. - Resolve the active slot. Record the
slotvalue. A tutorial example documents slots 1 through 5, but your installation can be configured differently; do not infer the live slot from a file’s timestamp. - Copy the complete save root. Copy the entire active server-save directory, preserving every slot folder and its parent structure. Use normal file-copy tools such as File Explorer, Robocopy, or your backup program, but do not filter by extension or select only the newest item.
- Label and separate the archive. Put the copy on another local disk, an external hard drive for PC backup, or a removable USB device. Include the server name, date, and slot in the folder or archive name.
- Check the copy before restarting. Open the destination and confirm that the expected slot directory and surrounding files are present. Keep the original live folder untouched until this check is complete.
The copy is a point-in-time archive. It does not alter the live server and it will not automatically update when later sessions change the world.

How do I download a backup from a managed host?
Stop the instance in the provider’s control panel, wait for a fully stopped state, then connect with the file manager, FTP, or SFTP method the provider supplies. Download the complete Multiplayer save folder to local storage rather than downloading individual files.

| Nitrado | /forest/saves/Multiplayer |
Use this as the documented example path, then confirm the actual slot and parent directory in that server’s file manager. |
| BisectHosting | The server’s TheForestDedicatedServer_DataMultiplayer area |
Download the complete relevant slot folder; the surrounding layout can differ between products or migrations. |
- Issue the provider’s stop command and wait for the server to finish shutting down.
- Open the host’s file manager or connect with the supplied FTP/SFTP credentials.
- Navigate to the exposed Multiplayer save directory and identify the slot configured for the server.
- Download the entire slot structure and its parent files to a local folder named with the server, date, and slot.
- Inspect the downloaded directory before starting the server again. If the transfer reports skipped files or errors, repeat it while the server remains stopped.
Do not assume that two hosts use the same directory names. A provider migration, game-panel template, or custom startup setting can expose a different root, so the path shown by the active file manager takes precedence over examples.
How can I verify that the local archive is usable?
Verification catches an incomplete transfer before the original destination is replaced.
- Confirm that the archive opens without read errors and that its total size is plausible compared with the live folder.
- Check that the configured slot directory is present and that the parent structure has not been flattened by the FTP client.
- Make sure the archive label records the date, server identity, and slot; this prevents restoring the wrong world when several copies exist.
- Keep the archive on storage that is not continuously mounted to the server. Disconnecting an external or USB drive after copying protects it from accidental edits and some malware incidents.
- If you use a second local disk, remember that a single computer failure can affect both disks. Maintain an additional off-device copy when the world is difficult to replace.
How do I restore a Forest server save without creating a new world?
Restore only while the game and server are stopped. Move the current destination aside first, copy the archived complete folder into the active configured directory, and make the server load the archived slot with initType set to Continue.

- Stop every writer. Exit the game and stop the dedicated server or managed instance. Wait for the control panel to report a full stop when applicable.
- Preserve the current state. Rename or move the destination save folder to a rollback name such as
Forest-before-restore. Do not delete it yet; it is your fallback if the archive is the wrong version. - Recheck the destination. Read
saveFolderPathand the launch command again. Restore into the path the server will actually use, not merely the directory that looks familiar. - Copy the archive. Place the complete saved folder, including its slot structure, in the active destination. Avoid nesting it one level too deep through an FTP drag-and-drop operation.
- Match the slot. Set the server’s configured
slotto the slot contained in the archive. If you intentionally move a world to another slot, preserve the folder structure and change the configuration deliberately rather than guessing at file names. - Continue the existing world. Set
initTypetoContinuewhen the server must load an existing save. A setting intended to initialize a new game can make a valid archive appear missing. - Start and inspect. Verify recognizable buildings, progression, and player data. Do not remove the moved-aside folder until these checks succeed through a normal connection.
If the restored server starts a fresh world, stop it again before more testing. First compare the active path, slot, and initType with the archive; repeatedly launching a misconfigured server can create new files in the wrong location and make diagnosis harder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat are the most common backup and restore failures?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The restored server shows a new world | The server is reading another saveFolderPath, the slot does not match, or initType is not set to continue an existing game. |
Stop the server, inspect both the launch command and Server.cfg, then point the configuration at the archived slot. |
| Players lose buildings or shared progress | Only a character folder or a partial slot was copied. | Restore the complete Multiplayer save root from an archive made while the server was stopped. |
| The file manager shows an empty or unexpected directory | The host uses a provider-specific layout or the server was not fully stopped before browsing. | Use the path exposed by the current control panel, stop the instance completely, and download the full relevant folder. |
| The copy contains changing timestamps or transfer errors | A server process was still writing, or FTP/SFTP skipped files. | Delete the incomplete archive, stop all writers, and perform a fresh complete copy. |
| A valid archive will not load after transfer | The folder was nested incorrectly, flattened, or copied into a different configured root. | Compare the archive’s parent and slot structure with the original, move the destination aside, and copy the folder again without changing its hierarchy. |
Which local backup destination should I use?
No single destination protects against every failure. Use the fastest option you can verify, then add an independent copy when the server world matters.
| Destination | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Another local disk | Fast copying and restoring, convenient for frequent manual archives. | A failure affecting the whole computer can damage both disks if they are not independent. |
| External or USB storage | Easy to disconnect and keep offline after verification. | You must reconnect it for new versions and confirm that the copy completed correctly. |
| Independently managed cloud storage | Provides an off-device copy when local hardware is unavailable. | Availability, retention, synchronization, and version history depend on the provider’s current terms. |
| Steam Cloud | Convenient synchronization for supported game files. | It is not a guaranteed recovery service. Steam Support states that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. |
For a practical two-copy arrangement, keep one archive on a disconnected external drive and another on storage independent of the server machine. Do not describe either as a guaranteed retention system unless its provider explicitly supplies that policy.
What server settings should I record with the save?
Record the values that determine how the dedicated server opens the world, along with any custom path in the startup command. The Steam Community’s Dedicated Server Tutorial (2019) lists the following example values:

| Setting or detail | Documented example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum players | 8 | An example configuration value, not a promise that every host or installation allows eight players. |

| Autosave interval | 15 minutes | The tutorial’s documented default, not a guarantee that a host has retained the same interval. |
These values help recreate the operating context, but they are not substitutes for the save itself. The path, slot, and initialization mode are the details that most directly determine whether a restore opens the intended world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should I create a local archive?
The documented 15-minute autosave interval describes how often the example server writes an autosave; it does not create an independent backup. Create a manual archive at milestones that would be expensive to repeat, such as before changing server configuration, moving hosts, applying a major update, or ending a long building session. Keep more than one dated version so a newly discovered corruption does not replace your only good copy.
Always perform the copy after a clean shutdown. A backup made during an autosave can capture an inconsistent mixture of old and new files even when the transfer itself reports success.
Can Steam Cloud replace a local Forest server backup?
No. Steam Cloud can synchronize files, but Steam Support explicitly warns that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. Treat synchronization as a convenience and keep a separately stored, verified copy of the dedicated-server save.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy the Forest save while the server is still running?
You can physically copy files, but a live server may be writing several related files at different times. The resulting archive can represent no consistent game state, so stop the server and wait for a complete shutdown before making the copy.
Does a dedicated-server backup include each player’s inventory and character?
A complete Multiplayer save root is intended to preserve both shared-world state and the associated client-character data. A character-only download is not a substitute for that root and can omit the world other players rely on.
Why does my restored save appear under the wrong slot?
The server opens the slot named in its active configuration, not necessarily the slot you selected when downloading. Compare the archive’s slot directory with the configured value and check whether a launch argument is overriding Server.cfg.
Can I restore an archive to a different computer?
Yes, provided the new server points to the copied save directory and uses a compatible configuration. Preserve the original folder hierarchy, set the matching slot, and keep the old destination available until the world loads correctly.
How much storage do I need for local Forest backups?
The required capacity depends on the size of your complete save directory and the number of dated versions you retain. Check the folder’s properties after a clean shutdown, then leave additional free space so a future archive does not fail mid-transfer.
