To make an equippable item in Roblox Studio, insert a Tool, add a Part or MeshPart named Handle, then place the Tool in StarterPack or Workspace depending on how players should get it. Add a script for its behavior; use server-side handling for effects that must affect the shared game.
What a Roblox Tool is
A Roblox Tool is an engine object that a Humanoid can equip; it is not a physical tool. When unequipped, it is stored in the player’s Backpack. When equipped, it moves to the player’s character model. Roblox’s Tool API reference documents its properties and events.
Create the Tool and its held object
- In Studio’s Explorer, insert a
Tool. For easier editing, Roblox’s Create player tools tutorial recommends building it inWorkspacefirst, where you can see it. - Add a
PartorMeshPartas a child of the Tool and rename it exactlyHandle. The name and capitalization matter. Roblox warns that a Tool without a required Handle will drop to the ground when a player tries to equip it. - Add any additional visual details as child parts or mesh parts, then position and configure them to form the item. You can also set properties such as
TextureIdfor an inventory icon andToolTipfor a short description.
If your item does not need a held object, set the Tool’s RequiresHandle property to false. Otherwise, keep the child part named Handle; the Tool API notes that Equipped will not fire when a required Handle is missing.
Choose how players receive the Tool

These are different setups: placing a Tool in Workspace makes it a world object, while placing it in StarterPack provisions it to players. If it appears in the world but not in a player’s hotbar, check which container holds it.

Add behavior with Tool events
Put a script inside the Tool and connect it to the events that match the behavior you want. The Tool API documents Equipped, Unequipped, Activated, and Deactivated. For example, a LocalScript can respond to Equipped or Activated to play a sound stored in the Handle, as demonstrated in Roblox’s player-tools tutorial.
For multiplayer gameplay, separate detecting a player’s input from applying an effect to the shared game. Roblox’s In-game tools guide describes detecting tool input in a client-side LocalScript and using a server-side Script for the resulting world effect, with a RemoteEvent to pass the request. Validate client requests on the server before applying consequential gameplay actions; the client should not be treated as authoritative.

Fix common Tool problems
- The Tool will not equip or its event does not fire: If
RequiresHandleis true, confirm the Tool has a direct child namedHandle. If the item intentionally has no held object, setRequiresHandletofalse. - The item is visible in the world but not in the hotbar: A Tool in
Workspaceis set up as a pickup; a Tool inStarterPackis supplied to players on joining or respawning. - Other players cannot see the effect: A LocalScript-only effect is client-side. Handle shared world effects on the server, using a RemoteEvent to communicate the request and validating it before taking action.
