If you still know the current administrator password, change it in Satisfactory’s in-game Server Manager without deleting your world. If the password is lost, stop the dedicated server and delete only its port-specific ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav file—for example, ServerSettings.7777.sav—then add the server again and create a new password. The settings-file reset preserves the world save but clears several other server settings, so record them first.
Choose the right method first
Satisfactory has separate credentials for administrator privileges and for protecting player access. The administrator password controls privileged actions such as loading saves, changing server options and creating a new game. It is not the same as the player or client-protection password used to limit ordinary connections.

Use the first method whenever possible. The file reset is a recovery procedure, not a routine password-change shortcut, because it also removes unrelated configuration values. The API is a good fit for controlled automation, but only when an administrator token already exists and the endpoint can be reached securely.

Before touching anything, answer three questions: Do you know the current admin password? Can you stop the correct dedicated-server instance? Can you access the instance’s files or a control panel that exposes them? Those answers determine the safe path.

What the administrator password protects
The admin password limits administrator privileges on a dedicated server. The protected operations documented for it include loading saved games, changing server options and creating a new game. Anyone who needs those controls must authenticate with the administrator credential.
Player-password protection is a different control. It governs whether clients can join with the player credential; changing one password does not automatically change the other. Keep both values in your server records and label them clearly so you do not reset the wrong credential.
This distinction explains a common symptom: a player may be able to join the world but still be unable to load a save or alter options. That is an administrator-authentication problem, not proof that the world save is damaged. Conversely, changing only the admin password does not change the password ordinary players use to connect.

This is the least disruptive option. It does not require deleting a settings file or rebuilding the server configuration.
- Start Satisfactory. Open the game client that you use to administer the dedicated server.
- Open Server Manager. Select the entry for the dedicated server you manage.
- Authenticate with the current administrator password. The existing credential is required to reach administrator settings.
- Open the server settings. Find the field labeled Admin Password.
- Enter a new non-empty password. Use the new value in the Admin Password field, not the separate player-password field.
- Save the settings. Allow Server Manager to finish applying the change before closing the server entry.
- Reconnect administration clients. Any tool or person that performs administrator actions must use the new credential on its next authentication.
The documented purpose of this field is to restrict administrator privileges to a defined set of players. Changing it therefore affects administrative access, not the existence of the save or the ordinary player password.
Check the change before you leave
After saving, perform a small administrative action that you normally use, such as opening the server options view. Then sign out and authenticate again with the new password. This confirms that the value was actually saved and that you are testing the administrator credential rather than a remembered player password. If the old password still appears to work in one client, that client may be using a cached session; test a fresh login before assuming the change failed.
After the change
- Replace the old value in your password manager or server runbook.
- Tell every administrator to sign in again with the new value.
- If an administration client keeps presenting the old credential, remove or edit its stored entry rather than repeatedly retrying the obsolete password.
- Do not delete the world-save directory merely because an administrator cannot sign in; use the recovery procedure below only when the current password is genuinely unavailable.
- Keep the admin and player credentials as separate labeled entries, even if the same people use both.
Reset a forgotten password by removing the settings file
When no administrator can authenticate, the documented recovery is to remove the dedicated server’s port-specific settings file. The file name follows the pattern ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav, where <PORT> is the game port. For a server using port 7777, the filename is ServerSettings.7777.sav.
This procedure requires filesystem access, either directly on the machine running the server or through a hosting control panel that allows file management. If a host does not provide that access, ask the host to perform the documented file operation or use an administrator who still has a valid login; do not guess at other files.

- Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly. Shut the server down through the method provided by your operating system or management panel and wait for it to finish closing. Do not delete files while the process is still writing them.
- Make a backup. Copy the settings file and the server’s save directories to a separate safe location before changing anything. The backup gives you a way to recover configuration values or investigate a mistake.
- Identify the game port. Use the port configured for this dedicated server. The port is part of the settings filename, so selecting a file for a different port can affect the wrong server instance.
- Locate the settings file. Find
ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav. The official FAQ describes it as being just above the server savegame directory in the dedicated-server save/configuration location. - Delete only that settings file. Remove the port-specific
ServerSettingsfile. Do not remove the world-save files or the entire save directory. - Start the dedicated server again. Let it initialize with the settings file absent.
- Add or connect to the server in Server Manager. Use the in-game Server Manager to discover or enter the server again.
- Create a new administrator password when prompted. Choose a non-empty value and complete the setup.
- Recreate the other settings that were cleared. Restore the server name, player password, auto-load session name and certificate as needed, then save the configuration.
The reset targets the settings file, not the world save. Your map and progress remain a separate concern as long as you delete only the port-specific settings file. The backup is still important because it preserves the values you will need to re-enter and gives you a recovery point if you selected the wrong instance.
Order matters
Do not start by deleting the file and then search for a backup. First stop the process, confirm the port, copy the settings and save directories, and only then remove the matching file. After the restart, complete the Server Manager setup before inviting players back. That order reduces the chance that a running process recreates or overwrites configuration while you are working.
What deleting ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav resets
The file contains more than the administrator credential. Removing it also resets the following values:

- Player password: the credential that protects ordinary player connections.
- Auto-load session name: the session configured to load automatically.
- Certificate: the server certificate associated with its configuration.
- Admin password: the credential you are trying to recover.
Record each value before the reset if you want to restore the previous setup. A missing value after the restart is expected; it is not evidence that the world was erased. The documented operation does not instruct you to delete the world-save directory.
Plan for a short configuration pass after recovery: set the recognizable server name, restore the player password if the server should remain protected, select the intended auto-load session, and replace or confirm the certificate setting. Do not assume that a newly initialized settings file will remember any of those values simply because the world save is still present.
Settings versus world data
The filename is the practical boundary to remember. ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav stores server identity and access settings, while the save directory holds the world data. A credential reset should target the former only. If a control panel presents several similarly named files, expand the path and verify the port before deleting anything.
If the settings file is missing
A missing file does not necessarily mean that the server has no configuration. First confirm that you stopped the correct dedicated-server instance and are looking in its save/configuration location, not in a different installation or a different port’s directory.
- Check the game port and look for the matching filename, such as
ServerSettings.7777.sav. - Shut the server down cleanly, then check the location again. The settings file may not be generated or finalized until the process closes gracefully.
- Verify that your account has permission to view and modify the dedicated-server files.
- If several server instances exist, match each instance to its own port before touching any file.
- Do not substitute a world-save file for the settings file. They serve different purposes and deleting the wrong file can remove the data you intended to keep.
Once the correct file is found, follow the reset sequence exactly: backup, delete the matching settings file, restart, and configure the server through Server Manager.

If the file still does not appear, avoid creating a random replacement with a different name. Recheck that the process has fully exited, that you are viewing the dedicated-server location rather than a client installation, and that the port number is the one used by the instance you intend to recover. A hosting panel may show the savegame directory separately from the directory immediately above it; the documented location is the settings area just above that savegame directory.
Change the password with the HTTPS API
Advanced operators can use the HTTPS API operation SetAdminPassword when they already have administrator authentication and want to change the credential through automation. The operation requires administrator privileges and accepts the replacement password in the request.
There is an important token consequence: executing SetAdminPassword invalidates all previously issued client and administrator authentication tokens, including the token used for the request. Your automation must authenticate again with a replacement token after the password change. Any connected administration tool that relies on an old token will need to log in again.
API failure conditions
cannot_reset_admin_passwordis returned when the requested administrator password is empty. The API cannot be used to remove administrator protection by sending an empty string.password_in_useis returned when the new administrator password is the same as the client-protection password. Choose distinct values for the two credential types.- An unauthenticated caller, or a caller without administrator privileges, cannot perform this operation. Establish administrator authentication before sending the request.
Operational precautions for automation
- Keep the new password out of shell history, public logs and source-control files.
- Plan token renewal immediately after the API call; otherwise scheduled administrative tasks may fail with an expired or invalid token.
- Use a secure HTTPS connection and restrict access to the API endpoint to trusted operators.
- Test the change with a controlled administrative action after obtaining the replacement token.
- Update every service that stores the old credential or token, including monitoring and scheduled administration jobs.
The API is useful for repeatable administration, but it does not remove the need to protect credentials. If no administrator token remains, use the stopped-server settings-file reset instead.
When the API is preferable
Use the API when the server is part of a managed fleet, when changes need to be repeatable, or when an operator cannot conveniently open the game client but can securely reach the HTTPS endpoint. Do not use it as a password-recovery mechanism: it requires administrator privileges at the time of the request. A lost password with no valid token still requires the file-based procedure.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Confusing the two passwords
Symptom: players can join, but administrative actions such as loading a save or changing options are rejected. Fix: change or reset the Admin Password, not the player-password protection value.
Deleting the wrong file
Symptom: configuration or world data appears to be missing after a cleanup. Fix: stop the server, restore from the backup, and verify that the target is exactly ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav. Never delete the world-save directory for a credential reset.

Symptom: the reset appears to have no effect on the server you are trying to access. Fix: match the filename’s port number to the running instance. Each port has its own settings file.

Expecting an empty API password to disable admin protection
Symptom: the API returns cannot_reset_admin_password. Fix: provide a non-empty administrator password.
Reusing the player password for administration
Symptom: the API returns password_in_use. Fix: choose an administrator password different from the client-protection password.
Continuing to use an old token
Symptom: automated requests fail immediately after a successful API change. Fix: obtain a new authentication token; all previously issued tokens are invalidated by SetAdminPassword.

Deleting while the server is running
Symptom: the file reappears, the reset is inconsistent, or the configuration becomes difficult to identify. Fix: stop the process completely before copying or deleting the settings file. A clean shutdown is part of the recovery sequence.
Forgetting the collateral settings
Symptom: the server comes back with a generic name, no player password, a different auto-load choice or a changed certificate. Fix: restore those values from the notes or backup after creating the new admin password. Those changes are expected consequences of removing the settings file.

Which approach should you use?
Choose Server Manager when you can authenticate: it changes only the credential you intend to change. Choose the settings-file reset when the password is irretrievably lost and you have filesystem access; plan to re-enter the other settings it clears. Choose SetAdminPassword when an authenticated administrator needs a scripted change, and design the automation around immediate token invalidation. In every case, preserve the world-save files and distinguish administrator access from player access.
If you rent a managed server and cannot access its files, the host’s control panel or support team must provide the filesystem step for a forgotten password. Ask specifically for the port-specific ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav file operation, not deletion of the save directory. That keeps the request narrowly scoped and protects the world progress.

Can I change the Satisfactory admin password without wiping my world?
