For a simple, continuous redstone signal, craft a redstone torch with one stick and one redstone dust, then place it on a block. Use a lever when you want to switch power on and off, a button for a brief pulse, or a pressure plate for an automatic trigger. Run redstone dust from the source to the device; add a repeater when the signal needs to be refreshed along a longer line.
Make a continuous redstone power source
A redstone torch is a straightforward source that stays on unless its supporting block is powered. The Minecraft Wiki’s redstone crafting reference lists its recipe as one redstone dust and one stick.
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place one stick and one redstone dust in the grid to craft a redstone torch.
- Place the torch on a block near the mechanism you want to power.
A redstone block is another always-on source, according to Minecraft 101’s power-sources guide.
Choose a source for the job

The Microsoft Learn redstone guide describes a lever as toggling full signal strength on or off. The guide is presented in an experimental Bedrock documentation view, so check your game version if a circuit relies on precise behavior.

Connect the source to a device
- Place the source near the device you want to activate.
- Lay redstone dust from the source toward the device. Dust carries the signal, but its strength drops by one with each segment; the Microsoft Learn guide says the signal starts at strength 15.
- If the signal has weakened too much, place a repeater in the line facing the next dust segment or component. A repeater receiving a signal of at least 1 outputs strength 15, and it only powers the dust or component directly in front of it.
Use the repeater’s orientation to keep the signal moving toward the target. These mechanics are described in Microsoft Learn’s redstone guide.
Use a torch to invert a signal
A redstone torch can also act as an inverter. When the block holding the torch is powered, the torch turns off; when that block is not powered, it stays lit. This behavior is documented in Minecraft 101’s power-sources guide. It is useful when a mechanism needs the opposite state from the one supplied by a lever or another source.

What may vary by edition
The crafting reference and Microsoft Learn guide support these basic instructions, but they do not establish a full Java-versus-Bedrock or version-by-version comparison. Pressure-plate interactions and precise circuit timing can depend on the plate variant and game edition. For a build that depends on exact behavior, verify it in the version you are playing.
