To change a default Roblox character animation, assign a published animation’s asset ID to the matching entry in the character’s Animate script when the character spawns. For a few states, change only those IDs; to replace the animation controller itself, provide a replacement Animate LocalScript in StarterCharacterScripts.
Change selected default animation IDs
This is the direct option when you want to replace only particular states, such as walking or jumping. Roblox’s character animation tutorial demonstrates changing the walk animation from a server Script and recommends playtesting the result.
- Create an animation in Studio’s Animation Editor or choose a suitable catalog animation. Publish a custom animation and copy its asset ID.
- If the custom animation will replace a default character animation, rename its final keyframe exactly
Endbefore publishing. For an experience owned by a group, select that group as the animation’s creator. - In Roblox Studio, add a server
ScriptunderServerScriptService. Connect toPlayers.PlayerAddedand then the player’sCharacterAddedevent so the assignment runs for each new character. - Wait for the character’s
Animatescript and the relevant animation objects, then set the desiredAnimationId. For example, to replace walking, usecharacter.Animate.walk.WalkAnim.AnimationId = "rbxassetid://YOUR_ANIMATION_ID". - Start a fresh character in Studio and trigger the state you changed. Test each changed state rather than relying on the asset appearing correctly in the editor.
Use the matching entry below. The two idle variations are separate, so change both if both should use your replacement.

These paths and the behavior of multiple animations assigned to a state are documented in Roblox’s Use animations guide. When a state has multiple entries, the script can choose among them randomly; weights influence the relative selection frequency. Roblox’s illustrative weights of 5 and 10 produce a one-third versus two-thirds share, respectively—they are examples, not required settings.

Replace the whole Animate script
If you need to change how the default animation system behaves as a whole, put a LocalScript named Animate in StarterCharacterScripts and supply your replacement implementation. Roblox copies it to each character when that character spawns. The character copy does not persist through a respawn, so keep the source script in StarterCharacterScripts. This approach is broader than changing a few IDs: your replacement script takes responsibility for the animation-management behavior you implement. Choose it when you need that control; for a small number of default states, changing their IDs is the narrower route.

Choose priority, weights, or an animation-pack mode when needed
Priority: decide which playing track takes precedence
Animation priority determines which animation wins when multiple tracks play at once. Set the priority appropriately when your custom animation competes with another active animation; a higher-priority animation overrides a lower-priority one.
Weights: tune selection among animations for one state
Weights affect how often the script selects each of multiple animations assigned to a state. Use them when you want variation but need to change the balance—for example, between two idle animations—rather than replacing the animation controller.

Animation-pack mode: use player choice or a standard pack
The experience-level AvatarSettingsAnimationPacksMode is a separate setting from an individual animation ID. Roblox documents PlayerChoice, which uses the player’s equipped animation pack, and StandardR15 or StandardR6, which force the corresponding standard pack. Check this mode if a player’s pack choice or a forced standard pack affects the result you expect.
Troubleshoot a replacement that does not appear
- Verify the published asset ID. A custom animation needs to be published to Roblox before its asset ID can be used. Confirm the value includes the
rbxassetid://prefix and is assigned to the intended state. - Check both idle entries. If only one idle variation was changed, the other may still play.
- Run the assignment after the character exists. Apply the change when a character spawns, and wait for the required character objects before accessing them. Then test with a newly spawned character.
- Trigger the state in a playtest. Walking, swimming, climbing, and other states will not show their replacement unless the character actually enters them.
- Check the animation-pack mode. If the experience is set to force a standard pack or honor player choice, that setting may explain why the experience behaves differently than expected.
Using a custom character rig
For a custom rig, Roblox’s Adaptive Animation documentation describes mapping rig joints to Roblox’s standardized skeleton. The system requires at least 15 of the character’s joints to map to that 15-joint skeleton; a rig that does not meet the requirement may not work with Adaptive Animation as intended.
