To make your own Wordle-style puzzle, choose a secret word on a custom-puzzle site, generate its share link, and send that link to the person who will solve it. The exact word-length, guess-count, and customization options depend on the site: this guide explains the flow on CustomWordle.org and distinguishes it from other tools with similar names.
How to create and share a custom Wordle
- Choose a creator. On CustomWordle.org, enter the word you want players to guess. The site says its tool works in a browser without a login, download, or installation and is mobile-friendly.
- Set up the puzzle. CustomWordle.org displays an attempts control from one to ten. Check the page’s current controls before sharing, since features and limits belong to that specific site.
- Generate the puzzle link. Use the site’s create or share action to produce a unique link for your puzzle.
- Send the link to your solver. Share it in a message, group chat, classroom communication, or other channel. The recipient opens the link and tries to uncover the answer.
CustomWordle.org says it is not affiliated with The New York Times. “Custom Wordle” is also used to describe other independent tools, so do not assume they share the same rules or features.
What the solver sees
On the Wordles.org implementation, the creator enters an English word of three to thirteen letters and shares the generated link. The puzzle gives the solver six guesses. After each guess, the familiar color feedback indicates how the letters match:
- Green: the letter is in the answer and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter is in the answer but in a different position.
- Gray: the letter is not in the answer.
These length and guess limits describe Wordles.org, not every custom-puzzle site. Wordles.org also says it is not affiliated with the New York Times.

How to choose a good secret word
A fair answer is one your intended players can reasonably recognize, even if it takes several guesses to find. CustomWordle.org recommends familiar words and notes that uncommon or repeated letters can make a puzzle harder. Wordles.org similarly cautions that obscure jargon may frustrate casual players.
- For a broad group: pick a familiar word and avoid relying on specialized knowledge.
- For a class: use vocabulary students are learning, as long as the word is appropriate to their level.
- For friends or family: a shared reference or inside joke can make a playful challenge, but make sure the intended solver knows the context.
- For extra difficulty: uncommon or repeated letters can raise the challenge. Use them deliberately rather than making the answer feel arbitrary.
How to choose between custom Wordle sites
Before building a puzzle, check the specific site for its supported word length and guess count, whether hints or attempts can be adjusted, how it shares puzzle links and results, whether it requires an account, and what mobile or styling options it offers. The documented features vary:
Rank #2
| Site | Documented options | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CustomWordle.org | Secret-word entry, a shareable puzzle link, and an attempts control displayed from one to ten; the site says no login, download, or installation is required. | Confirm the current controls and sharing behavior on the site. |
| Wordles.org | English answers of three to thirteen letters, six guesses, and green/yellow/gray letter feedback. | Confirm the current word and attempt limits before creating the puzzle. |
| Wordle.design | The service describes adjustable attempts, custom hints, themes, templates, share links, and result cards. | Check which options are available for the puzzle you plan to make. |
These are separate services; a feature listed for one should not be assumed to exist on another. Wordle.design’s feature descriptions are the service’s own claims.

A custom puzzle can work as a small activity for a birthday, wedding, classroom, group chat, or a themed challenge from a brand or creator. The format is simple: choose an answer that fits the audience, create the puzzle on a site with the needed settings, then send its link. A classroom word, event-related term, or group-specific reference can give the puzzle a purpose beyond guessing a random word.
