To make a spyglass in Minecraft, combine one amethyst shard with two copper ingots in a crafting table. Put the shard in the top-middle slot and the ingots directly beneath it in the middle and bottom-middle slots. Select the finished spyglass on your hotbar and activate your platform’s normal Use control to zoom in on distant terrain, mobs, builds, or the horizon. Both ingredients must be in their finished inventory forms when you craft: one amethyst shard and two copper ingots. A cluster cannot replace the shard, and unsmelted copper cannot replace an ingot.

Search underground for a naturally generated amethyst geode, then locate a fully grown amethyst cluster inside it. Mining the mature cluster is the source of the shard needed for a spyglass.
Find a naturally generated geode
Amethyst geodes generate underground. Their crystal chambers contain amethyst growths, so the first objective is finding one rather than searching ordinary cave walls for a loose shard. Once you enter a geode, look for the largest, fully developed crystal growths.
Identify a fully grown cluster
The cluster is the block you mine; the shard is the item that can result from mining it. Keep those names separate when checking your inventory or troubleshooting a recipe. A small or developing growth is not the same target described by the recipe requirements. The Minecraft Wiki identifies a shard as an item obtained by mining a fully grown cluster in a naturally spawning geode.
Collect the shard for the recipe
Mine a fully grown cluster and confirm that an amethyst shard entered your inventory. You need only one shard for one spyglass, so any additional shards can be retained for later crafting. If no shard appears, check that the block was a fully grown cluster rather than another amethyst growth.

Use a crafting table and place the three ingredients in one vertical line. The position matters: the shard goes above both ingots, not beside them.

- Open a crafting table. The recipe uses the table’s three-by-three crafting grid.
- Place one amethyst shard in the top-middle slot. Leave the top-left and top-right slots empty.
- Place one copper ingot in the middle-middle slot.
- Place the second copper ingot in the bottom-middle slot.
- Collect the spyglass from the output slot. The completed pattern produces one spyglass.

The output appears only when the ingredients are the correct items and occupy that vertical arrangement. Side-by-side copper or a shard placed in a different column does not reproduce the shaped recipe.
How do I get the copper ingots?
Start with copper ore or raw copper, then smelt it in a furnace using fuel. Each resulting copper ingot counts as one of the two metal components in the spyglass recipe.
- Obtain copper ore or raw copper. Either form can be processed for this purpose.
- Open a furnace. Put the copper input in the upper ingredient slot.
- Add fuel. Place an available fuel item in the furnace fuel slot.
- Wait for smelting to finish. The output slot will contain copper ingots.
- Collect at least two ingots. Move them to your inventory before returning to the crafting table.
If the spyglass recipe is not appearing, inspect the metal items themselves. A furnace input such as raw copper is not the same inventory item as a copper ingot, even though smelting converts one into the other.

How do I use a spyglass?
Put the spyglass on your hotbar, select it, and activate the edition and platform’s normal Use control. The view then magnifies whatever lies under your crosshair, while a scope overlay limits the visible area.
- Move the spyglass to your hotbar. Open your inventory and place it in a slot you can select quickly.
- Select that hotbar slot. Your character must be holding the spyglass before the zoom can begin.
- Aim at the distant subject. Center the crosshair on the terrain, block, mob, or other feature you want to inspect.
- Activate Use. Use the control assigned by your keyboard, mouse, controller, or touch configuration. There is no single universal key across every platform and custom control layout.
- Release or deactivate the control to return to normal view. The exact release behavior follows the edition and input setup you are using.
What the zoomed view shows
The spyglass enlarges the scene toward the crosshair rather than changing the world itself. A scope-shaped overlay masks much of the surrounding screen, concentrating your attention on the center. Reference descriptions show the overlay as a small circle or square depending on the edition and version, so its exact presentation is not identical in every installation.
What you can inspect
- Distant mobs: Check whether a dark shape is a creeper or another entity before approaching.
- Terrain: Distinguish a tree, hill, or other landscape feature while planning a route.
- Builds: Examine a structure from farther away to judge its silhouette and position.
- Horizons: Scan across open terrain or water without repeatedly walking toward every point of interest.
Does the spyglass work the same way in Java and Bedrock?
The crafting recipe and basic purpose are shared by Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The meaningful differences are the default FOV, the way a player’s configured FOV affects apparent magnification, input bindings, and some details of the scope presentation.

Why does the same spyglass seem to zoom differently?
Mojang’s figures describe the spyglass as using one-tenth of the FOV setting rather than a fixed visual multiplier independent of your settings. Because Java’s cited default is 70° and Bedrock’s is 60°, two players who have changed nothing may perceive a different amount of magnification. Changing the FOV option changes the apparent result when the spyglass is used.
This is a visual-setting difference, not a different crafting recipe or a separate item. If you compare screenshots or streams, first check the edition and the player’s configured FOV before judging the apparent zoom.
What are the best ways to use a spyglass?
The item is most valuable when distance creates uncertainty. Use it as a quick inspection tool, not as a replacement for moving through the world.
Identify a possible threat
When you see a distant silhouette at dusk or across a valley, aim at it before choosing a route. Enlarging the shape can help you decide whether the object is a creeper, another mob, or harmless terrain. That extra check can prevent an unnecessary approach.
Scout a travel route
From a ridge, shoreline, or open field, inspect the next landmarks before leaving your current position. You can look for a recognizable tree line, a pass, or the outline of a build and then choose a direction with better information.

Inspect a build from a distance
Large constructions are easier to evaluate when you can step back. Use the spyglass to examine the overall silhouette, roofline, or placement relative to nearby terrain without repeatedly crossing the same ground.

Watch the horizon
On open terrain, the horizon contains useful orientation clues that are difficult to read at normal scale. A brief scan can confirm whether a distant shape is worth investigating before you spend time traveling there.
Use it as a deliberate pause
Stop moving before activating the spyglass when precision matters. Centering the crosshair while stationary makes it easier to keep the subject in view, especially when examining a small distant feature.
Why is my spyglass recipe not working?
Most failed crafts come from an incorrect item, an incorrect slot, or using a grid that cannot hold the three-row pattern. Check the following in order.
- Confirm the crystal item: The top ingredient must be an amethyst shard, not an amethyst cluster.
- Confirm both metal items: The lower ingredients must be copper ingots, not copper ore or raw copper.
- Check the column: All three items belong in the middle column, with the shard at the top.
- Use a crafting table: The shaped arrangement occupies three rows, so the table’s three-by-three grid is the appropriate crafting interface.
- Check the output slot: When the pattern is correct, one spyglass appears as the output.
Why am I not getting an amethyst shard?
Verify that you are mining a fully grown amethyst cluster inside a naturally generated geode. The shard is obtained from that mature cluster; simply being near amethyst or mining a different growth stage does not satisfy the ingredient requirement described for the item.
After mining, open the inventory and look for the shard itself. The visual crystal block and the resulting inventory item have different names and different roles in the crafting process.

First make sure the spyglass is selected on your hotbar rather than merely stored in your inventory. Then aim at a subject and use the control assigned to the current device and edition. Keyboard, mouse, controller, and touch bindings vary by configuration, so consult your control settings if the normal Use action does not activate it.

If the view appears constrained rather than full-screen, that is expected: the scope overlay is part of the spyglass presentation. The overlay may look circular or square depending on the edition and version.
When was the spyglass added to Minecraft?
The spyglass arrived during the Caves & Cliffs Part I development cycle and the Minecraft 1.17 release era. Mojang’s Java snapshot 20W45A contains an early official announcement, and the Caves & Cliffs guides for Java and Bedrock list it among the new items from that period.
That history explains why its ingredients are associated with two major Caves & Cliffs materials: amethyst from geodes and copper processed into ingots. The recipe described here is shared by Java and Bedrock rather than being an edition-exclusive crafting pattern.
