What the 12-ingredient cost means
The recipe database reports a total cost of 12 ingredients for its cheapest Catholic Church route. That figure covers the full path, including prerequisites used to create the two elements; the final combination itself has only two inputs. A community guide to recipe data explains cost as the smallest number of base elements needed to create an item: InfiniteCraftWiki on GitHub.

Alternative recipe: Dating and Rainbow
The same database also lists Dating + Rainbow → Gay. Choose between the routes based on which ingredients you already have. It does not give a comparable total cost for the Dating route, so there is not enough information to say that it is faster or cheaper.
