Open Diplomacy, select the AI rival you are fighting, and propose a Peace treaty when it is available. If the rival will not accept, check the displayed success chance: reputation matters, but the rival’s personality and your relative military strength can matter too. A Ceasefire can stop attacks temporarily while you work toward peace.
How to propose peace
- Open the Diplomacy interface.
- Select the portrait of the rival you want to make peace with.
- Review the available treaty options. Hover over an option to see details such as its success chance, then select it to make the proposal.
- If Peace is available, propose it and read the rival’s response and any conditions before accepting.
These menu steps are described in the Anno 1800 diplomacy reference. The game’s menu is the authority for what is currently available in your save.

What peace and a ceasefire do
A Peace treaty ends combat between the two factions until one side breaks the agreement by declaring war again. Anno 1800 diplomacy designer Andrea described the treaty as ensuring that both parties are not engaging in combat actions against each other in the November 22, 2018 Anno Union diplomacy explanation.
A Ceasefire is a temporary pause, useful if you need breathing room rather than a lasting end to hostilities. The diplomacy reference reports a two-hour duration, but that detail may vary by version; check the timer shown in your game.

Why an AI rival may reject peace
Reputation is a key factor in whether a diplomatic proposal succeeds. Andrea, the game’s diplomacy designer, also explained that character personality matters and that rivals may compare military strength. A strong, stern character may only accept peace when substantially weaker than you. The chance shown for the proposal is therefore more useful than treating any reputation number as a universal guarantee.
A secondary war reference suggests peace may become possible at roughly 30 reputation, while noting that the threshold can be higher. This is a rough community-reference figure, not a guaranteed cutoff.

How to improve your chances
- Build reputation. The developer identifies reputation as a deciding factor in diplomatic actions.
- Flatter the rival. This can help, but avoid overusing it.
- Offer a gift if the character likes gifts. Reactions vary by rival, so do not assume a gift will always help.
- Complete quests. Quests are another direct way to improve standing.
- Consider that character’s preferences. The developer gives Artur Gasparov as an example: he likes impressive museums and dislikes heavy factory pollution. Alonso, by contrast, likes it when you wage war on another faction. These are character-specific preferences, not universal rules.
- Compare military strength. If the rival is powerful or stern, improving your position relative to theirs may be as important as improving reputation.
Check the terms before accepting
A rival may accept a treaty outright, reject it, or ask for money as a condition. Read the proposed terms before agreeing so you know what the deal will cost. If the proposal fails, use a Ceasefire if available, improve your standing or military position, and try again when the displayed chance is better.
