Check the console’s exact model and serial number. The classic RCM exploit applies to some original Nintendo Switch consoles marked HAC-001, and the serial range can indicate whether a unit is unpatched, patched, or uncertain. A Switch that can enter RCM is not necessarily exploitable: RCM is a mode, while the vulnerability works only on certain hardware.
1. Identify the Switch model
Look at the model marking on the back of the console. Nintendo lists these model numbers: HAC-001 for the standard Nintendo Switch, HDH-001 for Switch Lite, and HEG-001 for Switch OLED. The original HAC-001 is the model family relevant to the classic unpatched RCM route, but the model number alone does not prove that a unit is vulnerable.
Do not confuse HAC-001 with the revised standard Switch, HAC-001(-01). The revised model and Switch Lite use newer hardware and are not vulnerable through the same unpatched-original RCM route described here.
2. Find the console’s serial number
Read the serial from the console label, or find it in System Settings > System > Serial Information. Use the value shown in system settings if the label or case may not belong to the console.

Nintendo’s Americas support page says standard Switch serials begin with XAW or XKW. Its battery-life reference associates XAW with HAC-001 and XKW with HAC-001(-01), but those prefixes are identification clues—not an exploitability check. The battery-life figures on that page do not establish whether a console can be jailbroken.
3. Check the serial range for an original HAC-001
If the console is an original HAC-001, enter its serial in the maintained NH Switch Guide serial checker, or compare it with the ranges published there. The guide classifies results as unpatched, potentially patched, or patched. These ranges are community-maintained, not an official Nintendo compatibility certificate, and may be refined over time.

- Unpatched: The serial range indicates that the console may be vulnerable to the classic RCM exploit.
- Patched: The range indicates that the exploit has been patched on that unit.
- Potentially patched: The range does not settle the question. Follow the guide’s current direct-check instructions rather than treating this result as a guarantee either way.
A serial-range result is an assessment, not a substitute for the guide’s direct check when the range is uncertain.
4. Understand what RCM does—and does not—tell you
RCM, or Recovery Mode, is a pre-boot mode available on Switch consoles. On vulnerable hardware, the fusee-gelee bootROM flaw can be used to run code in that context; patched consoles may still enter RCM but cannot use that same exploit. As the NH Switch Guide puts it: “RCM is an intended mode for all Switch consoles. The exploit is the unintended effect that only some consoles can use.”

That distinction matters when checking a used console: seeing it enter RCM does not, by itself, prove that it is exploitable.
5. Know which hardware the classic route applies to
The classic fusee-gelee route is for vulnerable original HAC-001 hardware. Some original units were patched, so even HAC-001 requires a serial check. The revised HAC-001(-01) and Switch Lite use Tegra X1+ (Mariko) hardware with a new bootROM; the NH Switch Guide says its RCM software path is unavailable on those models without a modchip. Switch OLED is also not part of the unpatched-original RCM route.

Firmware version is a separate issue: other software exploits may depend on firmware, but firmware does not replace the hardware and serial check for this RCM route.

Ask the seller for the exact model and the serial shown in System Settings, then check the serial in the maintained guide. For a potentially patched result, ask whether the seller can demonstrate the guide’s relevant direct check. Compare the model, serial-range status, and any demonstrated result; do not rely on appearance or a claim that the console “has RCM.”

Should you use an RCM jig?
Only consider entry accessories after confirming that the console is compatible. The guide describes a purpose-made RCM jig as the easiest method and warns that improvised paperclip, tin-foil, or metal-bridge methods can damage the console. A USB cable and microSD card may be used later for payload and storage setup, but neither identifies whether a console is exploitable.
For patched hardware, a modchip is a separate, hardware-based category, not the same software route. The guide warns that installation requires microsoldering experience and carries a risk of damaging the console.
