For the standard maximum-power setup, use 15 effective bookshelves around the enchanting table. Place them two blocks laterally from the table, with one block of space between, at the table’s height or one block higher. Keep that gap clear according to your game edition: Bedrock requires air in the relevant two-high space, while Java has different rules, including for corner shelves.
How many bookshelves do you need for maximum enchanting?
You need 15 correctly positioned bookshelves to unlock the enchanting table’s level-30 option. The table counts effective shelves, not every shelf in the room; shelves beyond the 15-shelf cap do not raise its power. Minecraft Wiki’s enchanting mechanics reference describes the cap and placement rules.
Level 30 is the highest table option, not a guarantee of a particular enchantment or its highest rank. The result is randomized. Think of the build as maximizing the table’s available option, not guaranteeing a perfect item. The enchanting-table reference also notes that outcomes are random.
Where to place the bookshelves
Each shelf must meet the placement conditions to count:

- Place it two blocks laterally from the enchanting table, leaving one intervening block.
- Set it at the table’s height or one block above it. A lower shelf does not qualify under the cited placement rules.
- Keep the intervening space valid for your edition. An obstruction can prevent a shelf from contributing.
A compact ring or accessible enclosure can work; there is no mechanically superior decorative shape if both layouts provide 15 valid shelves. Choose a layout that leaves room to reach the table and fits your build.
Check the gap rules for your edition
Bedrock Edition
The relevant two-high space between a shelf and the table must be air. Keep that space clear rather than filling it with a block or decoration.

Java Edition
Java uses different blocking rules: at bookshelf height, air or a replaceable block may qualify. Corner shelves also use a diagonal gap. Because these details differ from Bedrock, avoid placing blocks in the gap until you have checked the rule for your edition. The mechanics reference describes the edition-specific behavior; consult the current game version if exact behavior matters.
Build and verify the setup
- Place the enchanting table where you want to use it.
- Arrange bookshelves two blocks laterally away, with one intervening block, at table height or one block above.
- Check that the intervening spaces satisfy your edition’s rules, including the corner-shelf rule in Java.
- Count the shelves that meet those conditions. Stop at 15 effective shelves; additional decorative shelves do not increase the cap.
- Open the table and look for the level-30 option. The shelf arrangement unlocks access to that option, but the enchantment offered remains random.
What enchanting still costs—and when to use an anvil
The bookshelf arrangement changes the levels available at the table; it does not remove the resource cost. Microsoft’s Introduction to Enchantments says table enchanting uses experience points and lapis lazuli. It also describes using an anvil to combine an item with an enchanted book, or to combine matching items that have different enchantments. Consider the anvil route when you want to apply or combine enchantments rather than rely on a table’s randomized offer.
