Clear cache before considering app data, and confirm how the game saves progress before deleting it: removing an app or its data can erase local saves and settings.
Check what is using space before deleting anything
On iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see available capacity and app usage. On Android, open Settings and look for Storage; the wording and route vary by manufacturer and Android version. You can also inspect the game’s store listing or in-game download screen for its stated size, though updates and additional game content may require more space than the initial download.

Phone storage and memory (RAM) are different. Storage holds apps and files; memory is used while programs run. Freeing storage can help with installing or updating a game, but it is not the same as fixing a performance problem caused by limited RAM.
Choose the least destructive way to free space

Free up space on Android
Remove files you can retrieve
Use your phone’s file manager or Storage settings to review downloads and other files you no longer need. If a file matters, copy it to a computer or another safe location before deleting its copy from the phone. Menu names differ across Android devices; Google’s storage guidance covers removing unused apps, downloaded files, and temporary data.

Archive a game you are taking a break from
Google Play can automatically archive apps used infrequently. Archiving removes the app while retaining personal data and leaving its icon on the device; you can download it again if it is still available on Google Play. To enable automatic archiving, open Play Store > profile picture > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps. A manual archive option may also appear on supported devices. Archiving is not a way to keep a game playable offline: reinstalling requires a download.
Clear cache, not storage, when you want a safer cleanup
On many Android phones, open Settings > Apps > [game] > Storage, then choose Clear cache. Exact labels and paths vary. Cache is temporary data, so clearing it may make the game load more slowly the next time while it recreates what it needs.

Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage or Clear data. Google says, “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.” That can include local progress, settings, and downloaded content. Check the game’s own settings for a way to remove content or manage saves before using the Android system control.
Free up space on iPhone
Offload a game while retaining its documents and data
Apple’s iOS 26 guide places automatic offloading at Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. When storage is low, iPhone can remove an unused app but keep its documents and data. Its Home Screen icon stays visible with a cloud symbol; tap it to reinstall the app. Reinstallation still requires a connection and depends on the game remaining available in the App Store.

You can also review app usage at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple distinguishes Offload, which frees space used by the app while retaining documents and data, from Delete, which removes the app and its related data. Some apps let you remove documents or data separately. Cached and temporary files may not be included in the app’s displayed storage total; iOS can remove such files when space is needed. Samsung’s Gulf support guidance describes moving selected files to an SD card through My Files on compatible Galaxy devices, as well as removing downloads. To clear an app’s cache on a supported model, the documented route is Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Clear Cache. Clear Data or Clear Storage is a separate, more destructive action that resets the app to its default settings.

These options depend on the exact Galaxy model, and not every phone in a listed product family has an SD slot. Moving photos, videos, or other files to a card may free internal space, but it does not establish that a particular game can be installed or run from that card. Check your phone’s specifications and the game’s support information before relying on removable storage. Samsung’s regional support article was last updated June 23, 2026.

Platform storage tools cannot tell you whether an unnamed game stores progress locally, syncs it to an account, or lets you retrieve downloaded assets later. Before deleting a game or clearing its data:
- Check the game’s account or save settings and confirm that progress is linked or backed up.
- Look for an in-game download manager before removing maps, voice packs, or other content.
- Make sure you can sign back into the account associated with the save.
- Use archive or offload instead of deletion when available if you want to retain app data.
Do not assume that a save is in the cloud just because the game uses an account, or that downloaded assets will remain after the app is removed. The game publisher’s instructions are the source for those game-specific behaviors.
