No, a digital visual novel does not automatically require a memory card on Nintendo Switch 2. The console has 256 GB of built-in storage, some of which is reserved for the system. If the game’s current eShop download size fits in your available space, you can install it without buying anything. If your library outgrows that space, the supported expansion is a microSD Express card—not an ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card. Nintendo’s current guidance says no individual game requires added storage, but check each listing because requirements can change.
How much Switch 2 storage do digital visual novels get?
Nintendo lists 256 GB of built-in storage for Switch 2, but that is the console’s nominal capacity, not a promise that 256 GB will be free for games. The system reserves some space, and any games, updates or other downloads already on the console also use storage. Check your actual free space before deciding whether to buy a card. The number printed on the box is therefore a starting point for planning, not the amount you can simply allocate to visual novels.

To see it, open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management. Compare the available space there with the current download size on the game’s Nintendo eShop listing. Nintendo says game requirements vary by title and are shown in the listing; there is no reliable fixed number of visual novels that will fit on a console. A nearly empty system and a console already holding first-party games, patches, screenshots or other downloads will have very different practical capacity.
The examples below are Nintendo US listing figures checked in 2026. They are listed download sizes, not measured install sizes, a genre average or a guarantee that a future update will leave the total unchanged.

The listings identify the other examples as Switch titles and show their Switch 2 file sizes. A listed download size is a useful planning figure, but leave room for updates and downloadable content (DLC), and recheck the listing when you are ready to install. These four entries illustrate a range, not a genre-wide average or a promise that a certain number will fit on a fresh console.
Do I need a microSD Express card for digital visual novels?
Only if you need more room than the console currently has. Nintendo’s support guidance says no individual game currently requires additional storage, but that is a time-sensitive statement, not a permanent rule. The practical test is whether the title’s current eShop requirement fits in your available internal space.

- Check free space. On the HOME Menu, go to System Settings → Data Management and note how much space is available.
- Check the specific game. Find its Nintendo eShop listing and read the current required download space. Do not estimate from the genre or from another visual novel.
- Decide how many games you want installed. Add the space needed for titles you expect to keep downloaded at the same time, while allowing room for updates and DLC. Nintendo’s listing figure is not a promise about a title’s future total size.
- Choose whether to make room or expand. If you are comfortable deleting completed downloads and getting them again later, you may be able to manage with internal storage. If you want more downloaded software available at once, consider a compatible microSD Express card.
- Check the card standard before buying. The packaging must identify the card as microSD Express. Similar-looking ordinary microSD-family cards are not substitutes for Switch 2 game storage.
Cards are sold separately. There is no evidence that visual novels as a category require a particular card capacity, or that buying the maximum supported capacity is necessary. Choose based on the space you want for your own library rather than a universal games-per-card estimate. If you search a retailer, the useful product phrase is microSD Express card Nintendo Switch 2; still verify the actual Express marking and compatibility details instead of relying on a generic “Switch memory card” label.
Which memory card works with Switch 2?
Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for expanded game storage. Nintendo says, “Any card (up to 2 TB) that meets the microSD Express standard can be used on Nintendo Switch 2.” That is the compatibility limit in Nintendo’s guidance; it is not a recommendation that every owner needs a 2 TB card.
Check the named standard on the card’s packaging or product information. The terms microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC alone do not establish that a card is microSD Express. Look for an explicit microSD Express designation from a reputable seller and avoid treating capacity alone as proof of compatibility. No brand-to-brand speed ranking or performance advantage is established here, so buy for verified standard, trustworthy authenticity and capacity you can use.

Nintendo also says the first use of a microSD Express card requires a system update over the internet. Plan to connect the console before relying on the card for a large download. After a compatible card is inserted, downloaded software defaults to it; updates and DLC can also reside there. The card is an expansion location for software, not a replacement for the console’s system storage.
For expansion, Nintendo recommends using one card rather than spreading downloads across several. Software downloaded to multiple cards cannot later be combined into a single card. If you change cards, you should not assume that content from separate cards will merge into one library automatically. Nintendo does not currently support an external USB hard drive as a storage expansion alternative.
| Option | Switch 2 game-storage result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in 256 GB storage | Supported; usable amount is lower after system reservation and existing data | Install titles that fit your current free space |
| microSD Express, up to 2 TB | Supported expansion for downloads, updates and DLC | Keep a larger library installed at once |
| Ordinary microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC | Not supported for Switch 2 digital-game storage | Limited media import from an original Switch |
| External USB hard drive | Not currently supported for this expansion | No supported role for Switch 2 game storage |
Will an old Switch microSD card work?
An ordinary microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card used with the original Nintendo Switch cannot save or load Switch 2 digital games. The limited exception is importing existing Switch screenshots and videos; that does not make the card compatible for storing or playing downloaded Switch 2 games.
If you already own a card from your original Switch, check its labeled standard rather than assuming it will work for game storage. For Switch 2 downloads, the relevant requirement is microSD Express. Do not buy a standard card merely because it worked in the older console or because its capacity appears large enough.
What happens to game saves if I use a microSD Express card?
The card stores downloaded software, updates and DLC; game progress stays in system memory. Nintendo states: “Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card.” Moving or deleting a download is therefore different from moving or deleting progress.

Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. That means removing a completed game can free space without erasing its local save, and it is one option if you would rather manage internal storage before purchasing a card. You can redownload a deleted purchase later, subject to Nintendo account access and the title’s current availability. Do not treat the expansion card as a backup destination for saves, and do not assume moving a game file moves its progress with it.
Does buying a physical edition avoid the download?
Not necessarily. A game-key card contains a key rather than the full game data: the initial download needs an internet connection and enough internal or microSD Express space, and the card must still be inserted to play. Check the specific edition’s packaging before assuming a box contains all the data needed for offline installation.
This distinction matters when comparing a physical edition with a digital purchase. The box alone does not tell you whether the full game is on the card, so use the edition’s packaging information rather than assuming every physical Switch 2 release works the same way. Do not infer that a particular visual novel uses a game-key card without edition-specific confirmation.
How much does a suitable card cost?
Cards are a separate purchase, and a reliable current price depends on capacity, retailer and availability. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not establish a required price or a best-value brand, so avoid choosing from an old price claim or from a card that lacks the Express designation. Compare the cost of the capacity you actually need with the alternative of deleting and redownloading completed games. Someone installing two small titles may reasonably stay with internal storage, while a reader keeping many larger games and DLC installed may value the convenience of expansion.
There is no verified affiliate offer or guaranteed discount to rely on. Nintendo identifies licensed cards through its own store, but that does not make every similarly named marketplace listing authentic. Verify the standard, seller and return policy before paying.

How should I make the storage decision?
Base the choice on your actual free space, the eShop listing for each title, and whether you want to keep multiple games installed together. A small download may fit comfortably, while a larger one—or a library with updates and DLC—can use the remaining room faster than expected. Since listed requirements and the no-extra-storage statement can change, recheck the current Nintendo listing and compatibility guidance at the time of purchase.
- Stay with internal storage if the titles you want now fit and you are willing to remove completed downloads when space gets tight.
- Add microSD Express if you want more downloaded software available at once or do not want to manage space by deleting games.
- Do not buy a standard Switch microSD card for Switch 2 games. It is not the supported game-storage format.
- Do not buy based on a claimed fixed number of visual novels. Use each title’s current listing and the console’s free-space reading instead.
- Prefer one appropriately sized card. Nintendo warns that software spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card.
- Plan the first setup. Have internet access available for the required system update before using a new Express card.

Can I use the same microSD Express card on more than one Switch 2?
Nintendo’s quoted compatibility guidance establishes that cards meeting the microSD Express standard can be used on Switch 2, but it does not establish that downloaded software can be shared between consoles. Check Nintendo’s current account and software-transfer rules before treating one card as a shared library.
Can I move my Switch screenshots to Switch 2 without using a computer?
Nintendo identifies importing existing Switch screenshots and videos as a limited use for an ordinary microSD-family card. That exception applies to media import, not to loading or storing Switch 2 games.
How much extra space should I leave for a visual novel update?
Nintendo’s listing figures describe the listed download size; they do not establish a universal update allowance. Check the title’s current eShop information and keep some room free rather than relying on a single estimate for every update.

Is a 2 TB microSD Express card required?
No. Nintendo supports compliant microSD Express cards up to 2 TB, but the maximum is a limit, not a requirement. Select capacity according to the titles you want installed and whether you are willing to delete finished downloads.
Will downloaded games go to the card automatically?
With a compatible microSD Express card inserted, downloaded software defaults to that card. Updates and DLC can also be stored there, while save data remains in system memory.
Can I use a USB drive instead of microSD Express?
No supported USB-hard-drive expansion is identified for Switch 2. For game storage, use the internal memory or a compliant microSD Express card.
If I delete a visual novel, do I lose its save?
Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. Removing a completed title can therefore free storage while preserving progress, although the game must be downloaded again before playing.
Does a physical copy always contain the complete game?
No. A game-key card may contain only a key, requiring an internet download and available internal or microSD Express space. Check the packaging for the exact edition.
The Bottom Line
Check System Settings → Data Management and the title’s current eShop size first. Keep using internal storage if the game fits; otherwise buy a properly labeled microSD Express card, up to 2 TB. Ordinary Switch microSD cards and USB drives are not substitutes for Switch 2 game storage, and saves remain in system memory.
