An Xbox controller maps to Ryujinx through Options > Settings > Input. Choose the correct player slot, select the Xbox or XInput device, bind the buttons and sticks, then save the profile. That gives you ordinary controls and rumble, but an ordinary Xbox pad normally has no gyroscope. For games that require aiming, tilting or shaking, add a separate motion source through CemuHook/DSU or use a controller with built-in motion sensors, such as a Switch Pro Controller.
The most reliable setup depends on the game: use a native motion controller when you want one-device simplicity; keep the Xbox pad and add BetterJoy, DS4Windows or another DSU-compatible motion source when you already own the Xbox pad; treat mouse or keyboard substitutes as game-dependent workarounds.

What an Xbox controller can do in Switch emulation
Ryujinx treats an Xbox pad as a conventional gamepad. It can provide face buttons, a directional pad, analog sticks, triggers, bumpers, menu buttons and rumble when the selected device exposes those functions. The exact name shown in Ryujinx varies by build: you may see Xinput controller, Xbox 360 Controller or Xbox One Controller. Select the closest Xbox/XInput entry rather than waiting for one exact label.
The important limitation is motion sensing. A standard Xbox controller normally has no gyroscope or accelerometer, so mapping its buttons cannot create true Switch gyro input. If a game uses motion for aiming, balancing, pointing, shaking or a required puzzle action, the Xbox pad can remain your button device while another controller, phone or motion application supplies the sensor data.

Ryujinx documents two supported approaches: native motion from a motion-enabled controller, and CemuHook-compatible motion delivered by a separate device or bridge. Software-only mouse or keyboard emulation may exist in particular emulator builds or games, but it is not a universal replacement for gyro data.
What you need before binding controls
- A Windows PC with the Xbox controller connected by Bluetooth, USB or its supported wireless adapter. Microsoft documents Bluetooth connection to Windows 10 and Windows 11 for the Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Ryujinx installed and able to start the game you want to configure.
- The controller visible to Windows before you open Ryujinx. Connecting it after the emulator starts can require an emulator restart.
- A motion-capable controller or motion bridge if the game needs gyro input. A native controller can supply both buttons and motion; an Xbox-plus-bridge arrangement uses separate devices or virtual devices.
- Only one active input exposure for each physical pad. A raw controller and a virtual Xbox device created by a wrapper can otherwise send duplicate presses.
For a first configuration, connect the controller, close other remapping utilities that might claim it, and then launch Ryujinx. This makes it easier to identify which device entry belongs to the physical pad.
Map an Xbox controller in Ryujinx
- Open the input page. In Ryujinx, select Options > Settings > Input. Menu labels can move between releases, but the Input page is where player devices and profiles are configured.
- Choose the player slot. For a game running in docked mode, configure Player 1. For a game running in handheld mode, configure the Handheld slot. A correctly mapped controller in the wrong slot can appear to be completely ignored.
- Select the Xbox device. Open the controller or input-device list and choose the entry labelled Xinput controller, Xbox 360 Controller, Xbox One Controller or the nearest equivalent. If both a physical and virtual Xbox entry are present, decide which one will be active before binding.
- Bind the buttons. Select each Switch control in turn and press the Xbox control you want to use. A practical starting layout is Xbox A for Switch B, Xbox B for Switch A, Xbox X for Switch Y and Xbox Y for Switch X, because the two consoles use different face-button lettering. You can choose a different layout if the on-screen prompts are more important than matching the printed letters.
- Bind the directional and analog controls. Map the D-pad, left stick, right stick, left and right triggers, bumpers, plus/minus and stick-click functions. Move each stick through its full range while binding or testing so Ryujinx records the intended axis rather than a neighboring input.
- Check analog direction and trigger behavior. Verify that pushing a stick up produces up in the preview and that each trigger reaches its full range. If a trigger is treated as a button or an axis appears inverted, edit that individual binding instead of rebuilding the entire profile.
- Test rumble if the game uses it. Send a test vibration from the input page when the option is available. Rumble confirms that the selected device is the one receiving output; it does not indicate that motion data is available.
- Save a profile. Save the completed mapping with a descriptive name, such as “Xbox Bluetooth Player 1.” Profiles let you switch between games or devices without re-entering every binding.
After saving, start the game and test movement, camera control, menus and both trigger ranges. If the game responds to buttons but not to a motion prompt, that is normally the expected result from an Xbox pad alone; continue with one of the motion paths below.

| Setup | Gyro source | Button source | Device count | Configuration effort | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native motion controller | Built-in sensors in a Switch Pro Controller or another supported motion controller | The same controller | One | Low after pairing | Players who want the simplest continuous motion setup |
| Xbox plus CemuHook/DSU bridge | BetterJoy, DS4Windows, a phone or another DSU-capable source | Xbox/XInput device | Two physical devices or one physical device plus a virtual motion source | Moderate; requires a running server and correct IP, port and slot | Players who already own an Xbox pad and want to keep its layout |
| Software-only substitute | Mouse or keyboard emulation when a particular build or game supports it | Xbox or keyboard input | One | Varies by game and emulator | Temporary testing or games with simple, nonessential motion actions |
The bridge path is more flexible but introduces another process, a virtual-device choice and possible driver conflicts. A native motion controller avoids those layers. Neither path has a universal advantage for every game: occasional shake actions may tolerate a workaround, while continuous gyro aiming benefits from a stable, dedicated motion source.

Path A: configure a native motion controller
Ryujinx states that it can use motion-enabled controllers such as a Switch Pro Controller, DS4, DS5, DSE and other supported devices. This is the cleanest solution when you want one physical controller to handle both ordinary input and motion.
- Pair the motion controller with Windows or connect it by USB, then confirm that Windows sees it before opening Ryujinx.
- Open Options > Settings > Input and select Player 1 for docked mode or Handheld for handheld mode.
- Select the native controller entry rather than an unrelated virtual Xbox device.
- Bind the ordinary buttons, sticks, triggers and menu controls.
- Enable Motion, choose Configure, and follow the calibration or sensor prompts shown by your build.
- Adjust motion sensitivity and deadzone only after Ryujinx receives a stable signal. A large deadzone can hide small drift but also makes precise aiming feel unresponsive; excessive sensitivity amplifies hand movement.
- Save the profile and test the motion action in a game. Recalibrate on a level surface if the neutral position is offset.
Native support still depends on the particular controller and Ryujinx build. If the device appears for buttons but not in the motion configuration dialog, check that you selected the native device and not a virtual XInput exposure, then restart Ryujinx with the controller already connected.
Path B: keep the Xbox pad and add CemuHook motion
Ryujinx can receive motion from a CemuHook-compatible server while taking buttons from an Xbox/XInput device. The bridge must be running before you configure the emulator, and it must remain running while the game uses motion.

Using BetterJoy as the bridge
BetterJoy supports Switch Pro Controllers and Joy-Cons with CemuHook output and can also expose detected controllers as generic XInput or Xbox 360 devices. That dual role is useful, but it is also the source of many duplicate-input problems: the same physical controller may appear once as a raw device and again as a virtual Xbox device.

- Start BetterJoy and connect the motion-capable controller. Confirm that it reports a controller and that its motion server is enabled.
- In BetterJoy’s configuration, use the usual local CemuHook values: IP address 127.0.0.1 and UDP port 26760, unless you deliberately changed them.
- Decide whether BetterJoy should expose a virtual Xbox/XInput device. If the Xbox pad itself supplies buttons, select that physical Xbox device in Ryujinx and avoid mapping the bridge’s virtual copy to the same player slot.
- Open Ryujinx’s Options > Settings > Input page and select the correct player slot.
- Select the Xbox/XInput device for button input and bind or load the Xbox profile.
- Check Motion and click Configure.
- Enable Use CemuHook compatible motion.
- Enter the bridge server IP and port. For a bridge running on the same PC, enter 127.0.0.1 and 26760. Select the controller slot that corresponds to the motion device.
- Save the profile, leave BetterJoy running, and test a motion action in the game.
In this arrangement, the Xbox controller’s sticks and buttons and the motion device’s gyro are separate streams. You do not need to bind the motion controller’s buttons if you want the Xbox pad to remain the only button device.
Using another CemuHook or DSU server
DSU-compatible applications can use a phone or another motion source. The Ryujinx configuration is the same in principle: choose the Xbox 360 or XInput controller for buttons, enable Motion, add a CemuHook UDP server, and enter the server’s IP address, port and controller slot.
- Start the DSU or CemuHook server and identify the IP address of the machine running it. Use 127.0.0.1 only when the server is on the same computer as Ryujinx; a phone or second PC needs its reachable local-network address.
- Note the server’s UDP port and the motion controller slot assigned by the application.
- In Ryujinx, open Options > Settings > Input, choose Player 1 or Handheld, and select the Xbox/XInput device for buttons.
- Enable Motion, choose Configure, turn on Use CemuHook compatible motion, and add the server address, port and slot.
- Save, keep the server active, and test the game. If the phone sleeps, changes networks or loses permission to use its sensors, motion input will stop even though Xbox buttons continue working.
A network-based source adds variables that a native controller does not have: both devices must remain connected, the address must remain reachable and the selected slot must match. Use a stable local connection and avoid changing the server’s port after you have saved the Ryujinx profile.
Path C: software-only motion substitutes
Some emulator builds or individual games can translate mouse movement or keyboard keys into a motion-like action. This is a compatibility workaround, not equivalent gyro input. It may be acceptable for a menu tilt, a simple shake or a game that lets you remap the action, but it can fail for games that expect an analog orientation, simultaneous motion and buttons, or calibrated sensor values.

- Check the game’s own control-remapping screen first. If it exposes a normal button for the action, use that rather than a hidden emulator workaround.
- Look for a motion or input-emulation option in your Ryujinx build, but do not assume that an option documented for one game works for another.
- Test every required motion direction and the neutral position. A substitute that handles left and right may not reproduce tilt, rotation or a shake gesture.
- Keep the Xbox profile separate from experimental keyboard or mouse bindings so you can return to the known-good layout.
If a game blocks progress until it receives gyro data, switch to a hardware motion source instead of spending time remapping ordinary Xbox buttons.

Ryujinx does not list the Xbox controller
- Confirm that Windows detects the controller and that its buttons respond in the operating system or the controller’s configuration utility.
- Close applications that may have claimed the device, including other remappers and virtual-controller wrappers.
- Connect or power on the controller before launching Ryujinx, then restart the emulator.
- Look for all three common labels: Xinput controller, Xbox 360 Controller and Xbox One Controller.
- If a virtual Xbox device is present, identify which entry is intended for this player and use only that one.
The controller appears, but every button is wrong
Load or edit the profile rather than relying on a preset made for a different Xbox generation or virtual driver. Rebind one control at a time, watching the input preview after each press. Confirm that the profile is assigned to the same player slot used by the game.
Buttons work but motion does not
This is expected from an ordinary Xbox pad. Add a native motion controller or start a CemuHook/DSU bridge. In the latter case, verify that Motion and Use CemuHook compatible motion are both enabled, that the server is still running, and that the IP, port and controller slot match.

Motion is listed but the game receives nothing
- Check the bridge’s server status and keep it open while Ryujinx is running.
- Use 127.0.0.1:26760 only for a server on the same PC. A phone or another computer needs its actual local-network IP.
- Confirm that the selected slot belongs to the motion controller, not the Xbox pad.
- Restart the bridge and Ryujinx after changing ports, devices or virtual-controller settings.
The game receives duplicate presses or two moving players
A wrapper may expose one physical controller as both its raw device and a virtual Xbox/XInput device. Assign only one exposure to the Ryujinx player slot. Remove the second device from the profile or disable the wrapper’s virtual XInput output when it is not needed.

Motion drifts or feels too sensitive
First establish that the signal is stable, then use Ryujinx’s Motion Controls settings to adjust sensitivity and deadzone. Recalibrate the native controller or motion application on a level surface. Increasing deadzone can hide small neutral-position noise, while lowering sensitivity can make continuous aiming easier to control; both settings can also reduce responsiveness if pushed too far.
The wrong player slot responds
Docked games use Player 1; handheld games use the Handheld slot. Move the profile to the slot the game mode actually reads, then save it again. This is separate from choosing the right physical device.
Which controller arrangement should you choose?
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Familiar Xbox layout, straightforward XInput mapping, Bluetooth support on Windows 10/11 and compatibility with Xbox Accessories button configuration | Normally no gyro; motion games need another source | You mainly need conventional controls or already own the pad |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | One physical controller supplies buttons and native motion in Ryujinx | Requires pairing and a controller profile different from the Xbox layout | You want the least complicated motion setup |
| Xbox controller plus BetterJoy or another DSU source | Keeps the Xbox pad’s ergonomics and adds gyro without replacing it | Two input paths, a running bridge, IP/port/slot configuration and possible virtual-device conflicts | You already own the Xbox pad and need motion for selected games |
For occasional motion, the Xbox-plus-bridge arrangement can be practical because you only start the bridge when a game needs it. For continuous gyro aiming or frequent motion prompts, a native motion controller reduces the number of components that can disconnect or claim the wrong device.

Connection and profile practices that prevent repeat setup
- Use a descriptive profile name that records the device and mode, such as “Xbox XInput—Player 1” or “Pro Controller—Handheld Motion.”
- Keep separate profiles for raw and virtual devices. Do not overwrite a working Xbox profile while experimenting with a bridge.
- Connect Bluetooth devices before launching Ryujinx when possible. If the device disappears after sleep or reconnection, restart the emulator before changing bindings.
- When switching from docked to handheld mode, verify the slot instead of assuming the same profile is active.
- Change one variable at a time: device, server address, port, slot, sensitivity or deadzone. This makes a failed motion test diagnosable.
- For wired play, a compatible USB-C cable can provide a direct connection where the controller supports it; it is an accessory for wired use, not a requirement for Bluetooth mapping.
Practical decision checklist
- Need only buttons, sticks, triggers and rumble? Map the Xbox controller directly as an XInput device and save the profile.
- Need gyro and want one device? Use a supported native motion controller and configure Motion in Ryujinx.
- Need gyro but want to keep the Xbox pad? Run BetterJoy, DS4Windows or another CemuHook/DSU source, select Xbox for buttons, and configure the bridge at the correct IP, port and slot.
- Using a phone or another computer as the sensor? Replace 127.0.0.1 with that device’s reachable local IP and keep both devices on the same reachable network.
- Testing a software substitute? Treat it as game-specific and verify every motion action before relying on it for progression.
