You cannot make an unsupported Windows 10 installation immune to a zero-day exploit. The safest approach is layered risk reduction while moving to a supported Windows release: keep the operating system and drivers patched, enable Microsoft Defender Exploit Protection and Attack Surface Reduction (ASR), restrict applications and administrator rights, and keep UAC, DEP, Firewall, SmartScreen and antivirus protections active. Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Compatible hardware should move to Windows 11; eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 consumer devices can use Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a temporary bridge through October 12, 2027, but ESU does not add features or technical support.
What does Windows 10 end of support mean for zero-day risk?
Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. After that date, ordinary installations no longer receive technical assistance, feature updates or security updates. A zero-day is a vulnerability that defenders may have little or no time to patch before attackers exploit it, so losing the normal update channel increases exposure to both newly discovered flaws and vulnerabilities that are already being weaponized.

The date applies to the normal Windows 10 lifecycle, not every specialized edition. Enterprise and Long-Term Servicing Channel releases can have different support schedules. Check the exact edition, version and servicing channel before treating a device as covered.
Security controls still matter after support ends, but they are compensating controls rather than a new support contract. Microsoft describes exploit mitigations as defense in depth: they make exploitation harder or limit what an attacker can do, yet they cannot guarantee protection from an unknown vulnerability.

Can Windows 10 still be protected from a zero-day?
Yes, risk can be reduced, but no single Windows feature can promise to stop every zero-day. Combine prevention, containment and rapid patching so that an exploit must defeat several independent barriers.
- Prevention: use Defender Exploit Protection, ASR, application control, standard-user accounts and UAC.
- Containment: keep Firewall, SmartScreen, antivirus and least-privilege settings enabled so a compromised process has fewer paths to persistence or credential theft.
- Recovery: maintain tested backups and a documented migration or replacement plan; mitigations do not restore a vulnerable system to supported status.
The Australian Signals Directorate warns that attackers can develop an exploit for a newly patched vulnerability in less than one day. Centralized, prioritized patch deployment therefore remains important whenever updates are available, including driver and third-party application updates.
How do I check my Windows 10 support status?
Start by recording the edition, version, architecture and servicing channel for every device. A practical inventory uses Settings > System > About and the winver dialog, then confirms whether the machine is on version 22H2 and whether it is a consumer, enterprise or LTSC installation.
Inventory checklist
- Windows edition, version and build.
- Whether the device is eligible hardware for Windows 11.
- Whether Defender Antivirus is the primary real-time protection engine.
- Current driver and application update status.
- Presence of local administrator accounts and business-critical software that may react to exploit mitigations.
Record this information in a central asset system. A device that appears patched may still be outside the normal lifecycle if its edition follows a different schedule, while an eligible 22H2 consumer device may qualify for ESU.
Should I upgrade to Windows 11, replace the PC or use ESU?
Choose the supported long-term platform whenever the hardware allows it. Use ESU only to create migration time, not as a permanent Windows 10 strategy.
| Path | Security coverage | Limits | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade compatible hardware to Windows 11 | Supported operating-system lifecycle with ongoing security servicing | Requires hardware and application compatibility checks; migration can disrupt users | Primary long-term option |
| Replace incompatible hardware with a Windows 11 PC | Supported platform on new hardware | Hardware purchase, deployment and data-migration work | Devices that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements |
| Enroll an eligible Windows 10 22H2 consumer device in ESU | Critical and important Windows security updates through October 12, 2027 | No feature improvements, other fixes or technical support | Short-term bridge while migration is arranged |
Microsoft’s ESU date is a hard planning boundary for eligible consumer 22H2 devices: October 12, 2027. Do not assume that an ESU enrollment covers enterprise or LTSC editions, third-party applications, or hardware that is not eligible. Verify the applicable Microsoft lifecycle and ESU terms for each device class.

How should I patch Windows 10 during the transition?
Use a managed process rather than relying on individual users to click Update. Windows Update policies, Microsoft Endpoint Manager, WSUS or an equivalent management platform can stage operating-system and driver updates, report failures and prioritize urgent fixes.
- Classify updates by severity and exposure. Prioritize internet-facing systems, machines that open untrusted documents and vulnerabilities with active exploitation or public proof of concept.
- Pilot in a test ring. Validate line-of-business software, VPN clients, security agents and drivers before broad deployment.
- Roll out in waves. Use a small production ring, then expand after monitoring crashes, authentication failures and application errors.
- Remove unnecessary pause rights. Where organizationally appropriate, prevent users from indefinitely delaying updates.
- Track exceptions. Every deferred device should have an owner, compensating controls and a deadline.
During the transition, the hardening guidance recommends staying on the latest available Windows 10 version. Microsoft’s release table lists Windows 10 22H2 ESU revision dated October 13, 2026, build 19045.7807. Verify the live release page before quoting that build in a deployment rule or automation, because release information can change.
How do I configure Microsoft Defender Exploit Protection?
Defender Exploit Protection supplies system-wide and application-specific mitigations that target common memory-corruption and control-flow techniques. The available protections include Control Flow Guard (CFG), Data Execution Prevention (DEP), mandatory Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), bottom-up ASLR, Structured Exception Handling Overwrite Protection (SEHOP) and heap-corruption protection.
Deploy system-wide protections first
Apply the system-wide baseline through your managed security policy, then verify that the settings are actually enforced on representative Windows 10 devices. Keep a record of intentional exceptions; an undocumented exception can become a permanent blind spot.
Test application-specific rules
Application rules can break software that depends on unusual memory or process behavior. Start in audit mode or a dedicated test environment, focusing first on browsers, document viewers, mail clients and other applications that process Internet-supplied data. Review events, fix compatibility issues, and move through staged deployment rings before enforcing a block on every workstation.
Which Attack Surface Reduction rules help against exploit chains?
ASR rules address behaviors commonly used after an initial exploit. Defender Antivirus must be the primary real-time engine for ASR, so confirm that requirement before troubleshooting a rule that appears inactive.

Begin with audit mode or a test ring for business-critical workflows. Review detections and application dependencies before switching a rule to block. A rule that blocks an exploit chain is valuable only if it does not force administrators to disable the entire policy to keep essential software working.
How do application control and least privilege limit damage?
Build an organization-defined application-control allowlist and review it regularly. Allowlisting narrows the software that can execute, which can stop a payload even when it reaches a machine through a compromised document or browser. It requires maintenance for legitimate updates, scripts and emergency tools, so document an approval path rather than permitting unrestricted exceptions.
Run daily work as a standard user. Keep UAC enabled and restrict local administrator accounts to approved administrative tasks. If an exploit lands in a standard-user process, it has fewer privileges to install services, alter protected settings or access other users’ data. Separate administrator credentials from normal browsing and email activity.
Which baseline Windows protections must remain enabled?
Keep UAC, DEP, Windows Firewall, SmartScreen or phishing filtering, and antivirus protection active. Microsoft’s security troubleshooter checks these controls and their update state. If that troubleshooter is unavailable, or if a workflow is affected by the deprecation of the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), verify the equivalent settings manually through your security-management policies.
Do not disable a baseline control to work around a single application error without recording the exception and adding an alternative safeguard. For example, an application that cannot operate with a particular mitigation should be isolated, updated or replaced rather than becoming a reason to weaken every device.
What rollout sequence minimizes disruption?
A staged sequence lets you discover compatibility problems before an exploit mitigation affects the whole environment.

- Week 1: establish facts. Inventory editions and versions, identify unsupported devices, confirm Defender’s primary-engine status and list applications that process untrusted data.
- Week 1–2: choose the exit path. Schedule Windows 11 upgrades, order replacement hardware where required, and identify eligible 22H2 devices that need ESU enrollment.
- Week 2: enable audit telemetry. Turn on Exploit Protection and ASR in audit mode for a representative test ring. Collect events and user-impact reports.
- Week 3: enforce low-risk controls. Apply system-wide mitigations, standard-user policies, UAC, Firewall, SmartScreen and antivirus baselines where testing shows no unacceptable conflicts.
- Week 4 and onward: expand and retire exceptions. Move successful policies to larger rings, review every exception, and track unsupported Windows 10 devices against the migration deadline.
What can go wrong, and how do I recover?
An application stops launching after a mitigation change
Identify the specific application rule rather than disabling all Exploit Protection. Return that rule to audit mode for the affected test group, collect events, update or reconfigure the application, and then retest before deciding whether a narrowly scoped exception is unavoidable.
ASR appears to have no effect
Confirm that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the primary real-time engine and that policy is reaching the device. Check whether the rule is in audit, warn or block mode, then test with a controlled workflow rather than assuming a silent policy is protecting the endpoint.
A device cannot migrate immediately
Enroll it in ESU only if it is an eligible Windows 10 22H2 consumer device, isolate it from sensitive workloads where practical, keep layered mitigations enforced, and assign a dated replacement or upgrade task. ESU should shorten the exposure window, not become permission to postpone the project indefinitely.
A patch causes a driver or business-software failure
Use the managed rollout’s pilot ring and documented rollback process, keep the device behind compensating controls while the issue is investigated, and redeploy the update once a compatible driver or application version is available. Do not leave the machine permanently unpatched without an owner and review date.

How should I compare Windows 11, ESU and hardening controls?
Evaluate five factors together: support duration, the kind of security updates available, hardware compatibility, operational disruption and cost. Windows 11 addresses the lifecycle problem; ESU supplies a time-limited update channel for eligible devices; Exploit Protection, ASR and least privilege reduce attack paths on either platform but cannot replace supported servicing.
There is no authoritative Windows 10-specific percentage showing how many zero-days these controls stop, and no reliable zero-day count that can predict your organization’s exposure. Treat every mitigation as a layer that lowers probability or limits impact, while measuring practical outcomes such as patch latency, policy coverage, exception age and the number of unsupported devices remaining.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I confirm whether a Windows 10 PC qualifies for ESU?
Confirm that the device is a consumer installation of Windows 10 version 22H2, then use Microsoft’s current ESU enrollment guidance for the edition and region. Enterprise and LTSC products follow different lifecycle rules, so do not infer eligibility from the 22H2 version number alone.
Does Windows 10 ESU patch third-party applications?
No. ESU supplies the specified critical and important security updates for eligible Windows 10 devices; it does not turn third-party browsers, document readers, drivers or business applications into supported products. Those components need their own update and replacement plans.
Should I disconnect a Windows 10 computer that cannot be upgraded?
If it cannot receive normal updates or eligible ESU, reduce its exposure by removing unnecessary Internet access, separating it from sensitive networks and limiting the tasks it performs. Keep required services behind managed access controls while you arrange replacement, rather than treating disconnection as a substitute for migration.
Can I enable every ASR rule at once?
A broad immediate block can interrupt legitimate workflows. Use audit mode or a test ring, review events and business dependencies, then enforce rules in stages with a documented exception process.
What is the safest response when an exploit is suspected?
Isolate the affected device from networks, preserve relevant security and system logs, and follow your incident-response process before changing evidence. Reimage or restore from a trusted backup when appropriate, then close the lifecycle and policy gaps that allowed the exposure.
