If Change is missing, Samsung does not allow that app to be moved through its supported settings. Even when the move works, some or most of a game’s downloads and data may stay in internal storage.
Check that your Galaxy device supports microSD
Not every Galaxy phone or tablet has a memory-card slot. Samsung says supported models typically have a microSD slot in the SIM tray; models without one have only a SIM-card slot. Check the exact model and regional or carrier variant before buying a card—Samsung device support, maximum capacity, and menus vary by model and software version. A software setting cannot add a card slot to a device that lacks one. Samsung’s microSD guidance explains the slot and compatibility checks.
After inserting the card, open My Files and check that SD card appears. Make sure the card is mounted, writable, and has enough free space. Keep some internal storage free as well: a move or later game update may need temporary working space.
Move an eligible game to the SD card
First confirm that the game’s progress is synced to its account or backed up using the game’s own system. Do not assume that uninstalling or clearing data preserves a local save.

This is Samsung’s supported app-move path. Labels or screens may differ slightly by device, carrier, or software version. Afterward, return to the game’s storage screen, compare its internal and external storage figures, and launch it to check that login, progress, and downloads still work. Samsung’s instructions specify that an absent Change button means the app cannot be moved.
What moving a game actually frees
Think of the operation as moving the portion of an app Samsung permits—not moving the whole game installation and every file it uses. Android’s app-installation model allows an app package to be stored externally while private data, databases, optimized code, native libraries, and other components remain in internal storage. A game may also keep downloaded resource packs, updates, shader caches, or other assets internally. The freed space can therefore be much smaller than the game’s total size shown in Settings. Android’s app-install-location documentation describes which components may remain internal.

- FLASH MEMORY CARD: Performance and reliability you can count on from the flash memory brand; All firmware and components are produced in-house
Use the before-and-after storage figures on the game’s app page to judge the result; seeing that the app is on the SD card does not establish how much internal space it released. If its large downloads remain internal, moving the app may make little practical difference.
Why “Change” may be missing
Usually, there is no hidden setting to enable. Samsung says many apps cannot be moved because their developers have not allowed external installation, often for compatibility or performance reasons. Preinstalled apps generally cannot be moved, and availability can also depend on the device and software build or the game’s current version. If the control is absent, treat the game as ineligible through Samsung’s supported interface rather than trying to force it.

What not to do
- Do not drag installed-game folders with My Files. My Files can move ordinary files such as photos and videos; it is not a general app-relocation tool. Android’s scoped-storage rules also restrict access to app-specific directories, so manually copying folders such as
Android/dataorAndroid/obbis not a dependable way to move a current game. See Android’s app-specific storage guidance and Samsung’s file-management instructions. - Do not remove or unmount the card while relying on a game stored there. Android says apps on external storage become unavailable when that storage is unmounted.
- Do not format a card before backing it up. Formatting erases its contents.
- Do not expect supported Adoptable Storage on Samsung. Android supports the platform capability, but Samsung says its Android devices do not support it. Samsung’s normal microSD card remains removable storage, not an extension of internal storage. Avoid treating rooting or ADB workarounds as a supported fix; they can risk data loss, updates, and device stability. See Android’s Adoptable Storage documentation and Samsung’s storage guidance.
Performance, card removal, and using the card elsewhere
MicroSD is primarily a capacity option, not a performance upgrade. Depending on the device, card condition and speed, game, and which parts moved, a card may increase launch, loading, installation, or update times. That does not mean every game will lose frame rate, nor does a speed rating guarantee faster gameplay.
Keep the card installed while using the game. If it is removed or unmounted, externally stored apps can become unavailable. An app portion moved through Samsung’s app-storage feature should also be treated as tied to its original device and installation: Android says externally installed app containers are encrypted for the device that installed them. For ordinary files, a portable card can be exchanged between compatible devices; Samsung warns that an encrypted card cannot be read after a factory reset or on another device unless it is decrypted first. Android’s installation-location guidance and Samsung’s card guidance cover these limitations.

Troubleshoot a failed move or a game that misbehaves
The move fails or seems stuck
- Wait a few minutes for a large game or a slower card; do not pull the card during the move.
- If the interface is genuinely unresponsive, restart the device, then confirm the card is mounted, writable, and has enough free capacity.
- Reopen the game’s storage page and check whether it moved. If the game is broken, move it back to internal storage if that option is available.
- If reinstalling is necessary, first verify that progress is synced or backed up; then reinstall from the official store.
The game crashes or loads poorly
Move it back to internal storage if possible. Check the card with the device’s storage tools or replace it if you suspect damage. Do not remove or unmount it while the game remains installed there.
The game still takes up nearly as much internal space
That can be expected when private data, downloaded assets, code, cache, or updates remain internal. Consider removing unused games, deleting old resource packs from within the game, or clearing cache—not app data—where appropriate. You can also move ordinary photos, videos, downloads, and offline media through My Files. Samsung’s storage-management guidance covers cleaning up files and moving them to a card.

- Worth trying: your exact model has a working slot, the game shows Change, the card has room, and reclaiming the eligible app portion would help. It makes most sense if you will leave the card installed.
- Unlikely to solve the problem: the game has no Change option, its large data stays internal, the device lacks a slot, or you frequently swap cards.
- Look elsewhere for a fix: the card is suspect, the game is unstable, or your priority is the best loading performance. A device with more built-in storage may be a better long-term choice when game data is the main space issue.
Samsung supports microSD and USB OTG storage for ordinary file transfers on compatible devices, but USB storage is not a guaranteed game-install location. See Samsung’s USB OTG and microSD transfer guidance. If you are considering a card, confirm your model’s slot and compatibility first; Samsung’s memory-card category is one place to review compatible product types.
