To move Steam games off your C: drive, create a Steam library on the destination drive, then use Steam’s built-in Move command. In the current desktop client, open Steam > Settings > Storage, add the destination drive or folder with + Add Drive, select the drive containing the game, choose one or more titles, click Move, and select the destination library.
This relocates game installation files, not necessarily the Steam program or every save file. Moving the complete Steam installation is a separate migration, and saves for games without Steam Cloud may remain under your Windows user profile. The safest destination for a permanent library is an internal, compatible SSD rather than a removable external drive.

Use Steam’s Storage management rather than dragging game folders in File Explorer. Steam updates the library registration and moves the installation files together, so the game remains associated with your account.
Before you start
- Connect the destination drive and confirm that it has enough free space for the selected games.
- Make sure the destination is suitable for your computer: check its form factor, interface, operating-system support, and whether your desktop or laptop has a compatible bay or slot.
- Back up important save files separately, especially for games that do not use Steam Cloud.
- Do not disconnect either drive or interrupt Steam while files are being transferred.
Move games with Steam Storage
- Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Use the + Add Drive control to select the destination drive or create a Steam library folder on it. A library must exist before Steam can move a game there.
- In the Storage view, select the drive that currently contains the game.
- Select the game or games you want to relocate.
- Click Move, choose the destination library, and start the transfer.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Keep both drives connected and leave Steam running until the operation completes.
- Launch the game. If Steam reports missing or damaged files, open the game’s Properties > Installed Files page and choose Verify integrity of game files.
Adding a second library changes where games can be installed; it does not move the Steam client itself. You can keep the client in its existing location while distributing game installations across registered libraries.

Can I move only one game without moving Steam?
Yes. For a single title, the library interface may offer a direct command that avoids selecting the game from the Storage drive view.
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Move Install Folder.
- Choose a Steam library that already exists on the destination drive and confirm the move.
Client layouts can vary by Steam version, so use the Storage page if this command is not shown. The destination still has to be registered as a Steam library; selecting an ordinary folder that Steam does not know about will not complete the move.
What if Steam says a moved game is uninstalled?
The files can still be present while Steam has lost the library path. Re-register the existing library before downloading the game again.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Click + Add Drive.
- Browse to the drive and folder that already contains the library, then add that location.
- Return to your Library and check whether the installed games reappear.
If Steam still cannot recognize the installation, reinstalling the affected title may be necessary. Do not delete the existing game folder until you have decided whether the files can be recovered or verified.
Should I move the entire Steam installation instead?
Move the complete Steam folder only when the Steam program itself must be relocated. Creating another library is less disruptive when your goal is simply to free space on C: or place selected games on a faster drive.

Steam’s full-folder procedure
- Exit Steam completely.
- Open the current Steam installation folder.
- Preserve the
steamappsfolder, theuserdatafolder, andsteam.exe. Steam Support’s procedure says to delete or leave behind everything else in the old folder. - Cut and paste the Steam folder to the new location.
- Launch
steam.exefrom the new location. - Check the Library and verify the installed games. Use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files if a title reports a problem.
Back up steamapps before attempting this broader move. If the move fails, Steam Support describes a more thorough uninstall-and-reinstall path that preserves and restores the steamapps folder. This is a different operation from adding a library on another drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill moving installed files move my saves too?
Not necessarily. Moving the installation folder changes where the game’s program files live, but save data can remain elsewhere on the system.
Steam Support notes that third-party games without Steam Cloud may store saves in C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games, while developers can choose other locations. Age of Empires Support also warns that saves and related records may remain on the C: drive. Copy important save folders to a separate backup location before moving games, and check the individual game’s support documentation for any developer-specific path.
A move should therefore be treated as two checks: confirm that Steam recognizes the new installation, then confirm that the game still sees the expected profile and save data. Do not assume that a successful file transfer is a complete personal-data migration.
Is an internal SSD or an external drive better for a Steam library?
For a permanent second library, an internal SSD is generally the clearer choice when your computer supports one. Steam Support explicitly says: "It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues." Removable drives can also disconnect at an inconvenient time and interrupt access to the library.

| Destination | Reliability | Performance considerations | Compatibility and convenience | Data-safety considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Usually stays connected inside the computer, avoiding accidental cable removal. | Solid-state storage is the task-enabling category for a permanent library; the practical effect still depends on the game and the rest of the system. | Check the drive’s form factor, interface, operating-system support, and available desktop bay or laptop slot. | Back up saves and the steamapps folder before a broad migration. |
| External SSD | Can be unplugged or disconnected, which may interrupt Steam’s library information. | May perform differently from an internal installation; Steam cautions about potential performance issues with external installations. | Requires a suitable port, cable, enclosure, and a consistent connection each time the library is used. | Disconnects during transfers or use can leave Steam unable to locate files or requiring verification. |
| External hard drive | Most exposed to cable, power, and connection interruptions among these options. | Steam’s external-drive warning applies; do not promise a specific transfer time or game-loading result. | Portable, but the drive must be connected whenever Steam needs the games. | Keep an independent backup because a removable library is not a backup by itself. |
The comparison is about the storage arrangement, not a guaranteed frame-rate increase. Moving a game to an SSD can change loading behavior, but the game and system determine the practical result; there is no universal percentage or time saving to rely on.
How much space and what hardware do I need?
Steam does not publish one universal capacity requirement for this procedure. Check the size of every selected game in the Storage view and leave room for the transfer; the destination must accommodate the files before Steam can start.
For an internal drive, verify all of the following before buying or installing it:
- Form factor: the physical size must fit your desktop bay or laptop slot.
- Interface: the drive must use a connection your motherboard or system supports.
- Capacity: it must hold the games you intend to move, with usable free space remaining.
- Operating-system support: Windows must be able to detect and use the drive.
- Installation access: desktops may need a free bay and cable, while laptops may have only one compatible slot.
Bethesda Support describes adding another drive, such as a secondary SSD, as a Steam installation location. The exact drive type and capacity remain a compatibility and budgeting decision for your particular computer.
What should I do if a move fails or files look damaged?
Work through the symptom rather than immediately reinstalling everything.

| The destination does not appear | No Steam library has been created there. | Open Settings > Storage and use + Add Drive to create or select the destination library. |
| The game is marked uninstalled | The existing library path is not registered. | Add the folder that already contains the library in Storage, then check the Library again. |
| The move stops or the drive disappears | A connection was interrupted or the removable drive disconnected. | Reconnect the drive, restart Steam if necessary, and check the library before attempting another transfer. Avoid disconnecting it during a move. |
| The game launches with a file error | Steam may need to compare the installation with its manifest. | Run Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. |
| There is not enough room | The destination cannot hold the selected installation. | Free space, choose another library, or move fewer games. Do not begin a transfer that the destination cannot complete. |
If verification does not restore the title, preserve your saves and the existing steamapps backup before considering a reinstall. A reinstall can replace program files, but it should not be your first response when the original library may simply be unregistered.
Should I move selected games or the whole library?
Choose the smallest operation that solves the problem.
- Move selected games when C: is crowded, only a few large titles need relocation, or you want to place frequently used games on a different internal drive.
- Create a second library when you want Steam and existing installations to remain where they are while new installs use another drive.
- Move the complete Steam installation only when the Steam program, account data, and its main folder must all live elsewhere.
Selected-game moves are easier to reverse and carry less risk to the client. A full-folder migration requires the steamapps, userdata, and steam.exe preservation steps, plus a verification pass after relaunch.
What is the safest sequence for a permanent move?
For most Windows users, the dependable sequence is: install or connect a compatible internal drive, create a Steam library on it, move one title first, launch and verify that title, then move additional games. Keep a separate backup of saves and the steamapps folder before any operation that changes the entire Steam installation.
This approach frees space without confusing a library relocation with a client migration. It also gives you a recovery point: if one title is not recognized, you can re-add its library path or verify its files without having moved every Steam component at once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep Steam libraries on more than one drive?
Yes. Steam can register multiple library locations, and each library can reside on a different connected drive. When installing or moving a title, select the library that matches the storage location you want to use.
Does moving a game free all of its space from the C: drive?
It frees the installation files that Steam transfers, but the Steam client and some user data can remain on C:. Save files for games without Steam Cloud may also stay in your Windows Documents area, so check those locations separately.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if the drive letter changes after I move the library?
Steam may no longer match the registered path to the physical drive. Open Settings > Storage and add the library again at its current location; if the files are intact, the games should be available without downloading them again.
Will moving a game reset my Steam achievements?
Achievements are associated with your Steam account rather than the physical folder holding the installation. Moving or verifying the files should not, by itself, erase the account’s achievement record.
