On Windows 10, open Taskbar settings and set Taskbar location on screen to Bottom, or unlock the taskbar and drag it to the lower edge. Standard Windows 11 already keeps the taskbar at the bottom; its normal settings can move the icons to the left or center, but not the bar to another edge. A taskbar-position selector is being tested only with eligible Windows Insider Experimental-channel builds. If a work or school computer refuses to move the bar, an administrator may have locked that setting with Group Policy.
How do I move the taskbar to the bottom in Windows 10?
Windows 10 has both a location menu and a drag-and-drop method. The menu is the most predictable way to restore the usual bottom position.

- Select Taskbar settings.
- Find Taskbar location on screen.
- Choose Bottom from the list.
The taskbar should immediately move to the lower edge. The same list includes Left, Top, and Right, so selecting one of those explains why the bar may have appeared on a side or across the top.
Use the drag method when the menu is inconvenient
You can also move a Windows 10 taskbar by dragging it. Right-click an empty area, clear Lock the taskbar if it is checked, then press and hold an empty section of the bar and drag it to the bottom edge. Release when Windows shows the taskbar at the lower edge, then open the context menu again and select Lock the taskbar if you want to prevent accidental moves.

Dragging works only while the taskbar is unlocked. If the pointer merely selects icons or nothing moves, check the lock state before trying again. The location selector does not require you to drag a narrow or crowded bar and is usually easier on a small display.
Why is the Windows 11 taskbar already at the bottom?
Microsoft’s standard Windows 11 taskbar is positioned at the bottom by design. In the normal release, Taskbar behaviors includes an alignment choice, not a control for moving the bar to the top, left, or right edge.
If you opened settings expecting a location list like Windows 10, you will not find one in standard Windows 11. The absence of that menu is normal rather than a sign that your installation is damaged. Windows 11’s supported everyday choices concern which way the taskbar contents are arranged inside the bottom bar.
How do I move the Windows 11 taskbar icons to the left?
To put the Start button and pinned icons at the lower-left without moving the taskbar itself, change Taskbar alignment:
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Open Taskbar behaviors.
- Set Taskbar alignment to Left.
Select Center to return the icons to the centered Windows 11 layout. This changes the horizontal alignment of the icons within the bottom taskbar; it does not relocate the bar to another screen edge. That distinction resolves many reports that Windows 11 “will not move” when the user actually wants the icons on the left.

Can Windows 11 move the taskbar to the top or sides?
A taskbar-position control is being previewed for eligible Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel, not offered as a normal control in standard Windows 11. In a Windows Insider Blog post dated May 15, 2026, Microsoft described a rollout that lets participating builds place the taskbar on Top, Bottom, Left, or Right.
On a qualifying preview build, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Use Taskbar position and choose the desired edge.
The control may not appear simply because a computer runs Windows 11. It depends on the device being enrolled in the appropriate Insider channel and receiving the feature in Microsoft’s staged preview rollout. A standard release, a different Insider channel, or a build that has not received the experiment will continue to show only the ordinary bottom taskbar and alignment options.
What limitations apply to alternate positions?
The preview announcement identifies several restrictions that matter before you switch sides:
- Auto-hide: Auto-hide is not supported when the taskbar is in an alternate position.
- Tablet-optimized taskbar: The tablet-optimized taskbar does not support alternate positions.
- Touch: Touch gestures were still in progress in the preview, so touch behavior may not match the bottom layout.
- Search: Search boxes are not supported in alternate positions and appear as search icons instead.
These are preview limitations, not promises about the final Windows 11 release. If a side or top layout is essential for daily work, keep the limitations in mind and treat the setting as experimental rather than as a guaranteed feature in every Windows 11 installation.
Why can’t I move the taskbar on a work or school computer?
A local setting may be working correctly while an administrator policy prevents changes. Microsoft Learn documents policies that can lock taskbar configuration, including Lock all taskbar settings, Lock the Taskbar, and Prevent users from moving taskbar to another screen dock location.

When one of these policies is enabled, the symptoms can include a disabled or missing control, a taskbar that will not drag, or a position that returns after you try to change it. The restriction is intentional: it can keep a managed desktop’s layout consistent for multiple users.
There is no legitimate user-side switch that overrides an administrator’s policy. Contact the organization’s IT administrator and identify the exact symptom and the policy name if it is shown. The administrator must remove or change the applicable policy before the normal Windows 10 selector or an allowed Windows 11 behavior can take effect. Do not attempt to bypass a managed restriction by changing unrelated system settings.
What should I check if the taskbar is not at the bottom?
Use the branch that matches your Windows edition and the control you can see. This avoids applying a Windows 10 procedure to a standard Windows 11 installation.
Windows 10 shows a location selector
- Open Taskbar settings from the taskbar context menu.
- Set Taskbar location on screen to Bottom.
- If you prefer dragging, make sure Lock the taskbar is cleared before moving it.
If the selector changes the position but the bar immediately returns, the computer may be managed. Check with the administrator rather than repeatedly dragging it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 11 shows only alignment
That is expected on standard Windows 11. Choose Left or Center under Taskbar behaviors to rearrange the icons, but do not look for a supported top, left, or right edge selector in the normal release.

Windows 11 is an Insider installation
Confirm that the build is in the Experimental channel and that the preview feature has reached the device. Then look under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors for Taskbar position. If it is absent, the device is not eligible, is on another channel, or has not received the staged feature; the ordinary Windows 11 behavior still applies.
The taskbar cannot be dragged
Dragging is a Windows 10 technique that requires an unlocked taskbar. A locked taskbar or an administrative policy can both make the bar appear immovable. Check the lock state first; if the setting is unavailable or controlled, ask the administrator.

How do I tell whether I moved the bar or only the icons?
Look at the taskbar’s background strip, not just the Start button. If the entire strip touches the lower edge, you moved the taskbar itself. If the strip remains along the bottom but the Start button and pinned icons shift from the center to the left, you changed alignment only.
This visual check is especially useful on Windows 11, where the supported customization is alignment. It also prevents an unnecessary search for a missing location menu when the requested result is simply a lower-left Start button.

What is the safest way to restore the usual layout?
On Windows 10, select Bottom from Taskbar location on screen and lock the bar afterward if accidental movement is a concern. On standard Windows 11, leave the bar at the built-in bottom position and set Taskbar alignment to Left or Center according to preference.
If an Experimental-channel Windows 11 build is using an alternate edge, reopen Taskbar position and select Bottom. Remember that returning to the bottom does not change the device’s Insider channel; it only changes the preview layout setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows 11 have the same taskbar location menu as Windows 10?
No. The standard Windows 11 settings expose icon alignment, while the four-edge location control is limited to an Experimental-channel preview. Seeing no location list on a normal Windows 11 installation is expected.
Why did my search box turn into a search icon after moving the taskbar?
The Windows 11 alternate-position preview does not support search boxes on the top or side layouts. It substitutes a search icon, so that change is a documented preview limitation rather than evidence that search was removed.
Can I move a locked taskbar without administrator access?
No. Windows 10’s drag operation requires the taskbar to be unlocked, and a policy can also prevent movement. If the lock or policy is controlled by an organization, only its administrator can authorize the change.
Which Windows 11 channel includes taskbar positions on all four edges?
Microsoft described the feature for eligible Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel in a May 15, 2026 Windows Insider Blog announcement. Other channels and standard releases may not contain the control, even when they run Windows 11.
