To make email attachments open in Word’s Reading View, change one setting in the Word desktop app: select File > Options > General, enable Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view, and select OK. Then open the attachment from Outlook. The option belongs to Word, not Outlook, and it controls how Word opens email attachments and other files that Word treats as uneditable.

What does the Word Reading View setting do?

The startup option tells desktop Word to open email attachments in Reading View rather than immediately presenting the normal editing interface. Microsoft describes the setting as a Boolean value that determines whether Word opens email attachments in Reading mode. It is intended for reading a document, not for changing its contents.

The setting is available in desktop Word editions, including current releases such as Microsoft Word 2024. The exact wording can vary by release: older versions may call it Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading view, while newer versions commonly include the additional words and other uneditable files.

How do I open an email attachment in Reading View in Word?

  1. Open the Word desktop application by itself. Do not begin by opening the file from Outlook.
  2. Select File in the upper-left corner.
  3. Select Options to open Word Options.
  4. On the General page, find the Start up options section.
  5. Turn on Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view. If your release uses older wording, choose the equivalent option that mentions opening email attachments in Full Screen Reading view.
  6. Select OK to save the change.
  7. Return to Outlook and open the attachment. Word should now display the file in Reading View.

This is a Word startup preference, so changing it while Outlook is open is not required. If an attachment was already open, close it and open it again after saving the option so Word applies the new behavior.

How do I preview an attachment without opening Word?

Outlook’s preview feature displays a supported attachment in the Reading Pane without launching it in a separate application. Preview and Word’s Reading View are different: Preview stays inside Outlook, while Reading View is a Word display mode after Word opens the file.

Classic Outlook

  1. Select the message in the Outlook message list. Its contents and attachments appear in the Reading Pane when the pane is enabled.
  2. To open the file in Word, double-click the attachment shown below the message subject.
  3. To inspect it without launching Word, right-click the attachment and select Preview.

New Outlook

  1. Select the attachment in the message.
  2. Choose Preview to view it in Outlook, or open the attachment menu to see the available app choices.
  3. For Word files, the menu may include Open in Word. Depending on the account and setup, it may also offer editing in a browser.
Outlook version Attachment action Where the file is viewed Word or browser choices
Classic Outlook Right-click and choose Preview, or double-click to open Preview appears in the Outlook Reading Pane; double-click opens the file in Word Opening in Word uses the Word desktop setting described above
New Outlook Select the attachment and choose Preview or use its attachment menu Preview remains in Outlook; an open command launches the selected app Open in Word may be available, and browser editing can appear depending on the account and configuration

In both versions, the Reading Pane is the Outlook area that shows a selected message and provides access to supported attachments. The commands can vary slightly as Microsoft updates the two Outlook experiences, but the distinction remains: Outlook Preview is not the same as Word Reading View.

Why can’t Outlook preview my attachment?

Several conditions can prevent the Outlook previewer from appearing or make it fail even though the file opens normally in Word.

Check the Office versions

Classic Outlook’s attachment previewer requires the same version of the relevant Office application to be installed as Outlook. For a Word document, Word and Outlook should come from the same Office version. A mismatched installation can leave the preview command unavailable or produce an error.

Match the Office user-interface setting

The Office applications also need matching User Interface settings. In the Office options, both applications should use the same choice: Optimize for best appearance or Optimize for compatibility. If one application uses a different setting, the classic Outlook previewer may not work correctly.

Make sure attachment preview is enabled

  1. In classic Outlook, select File > Options.
  2. Open Trust Center, then select Trust Center Settings.
  3. Choose Attachment Handling.
  4. Clear Turn off Attachment Preview.
  5. If the option to choose individual previewers is available, re-enable the document previewer for the affected file type.

Close and reopen the message after changing this setting. If the previewer still fails, open the attachment directly instead; Outlook may be unable to preview it even when Word can open it.

Check where the attachment appears

An attachment inserted inside the message body cannot be previewed in the Reading Pane. Open that attachment instead of expecting the normal attachment area below the subject to provide a preview.

Why does my Word attachment open read-only?

Reading View is designed for reading, so an attachment opened through this mode can look read-only even when the document itself is not damaged. The startup option changes the initial viewing mode; it does not convert the file into a different format.

If you need to make changes, use Word’s command to leave Reading View or choose the normal editing view after the document opens. Whether editing is allowed can also depend on the file’s protection, permissions, or location, which are separate from the Reading View startup preference.

How do I stop Word attachments opening in Reading View?

  1. Open the Word desktop application.
  2. Select File > Options > General.
  3. Under Start up options, clear Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view. In an older release, clear the equivalent Full Screen Reading option.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Close and reopen the attachment from Outlook.

After the checkbox is cleared, Word returns to its normal opening behavior for email attachments. This does not change Outlook’s separate Preview command; it only changes what happens when the attachment is opened in Word.

What should I do if the option is missing?

  • Confirm that you opened the desktop Word application, not a browser-only Word session or an Outlook preview.
  • Look on File > Options > General, specifically under Start up options; the setting is not located in Outlook’s attachment menu.
  • Search for the older label Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading view if the longer current wording is not present.
  • If your organization manages Office settings centrally, an administrator policy may limit which options you can change.

Once the appropriate option is enabled and saved, test with a newly opened attachment. A document that was already open may retain its previous view until it is closed and reopened.

Which method should I use: Preview or Reading View?

  • Use Outlook Preview when you only need a quick look and do not want another application window. It is fastest for supported files and keeps you in the message.
  • Use Word Reading View when you want Word’s document-reading interface, page navigation, or a larger dedicated window.
  • Use Open in Word or browser editing when you need to work with the document. New Outlook may expose these choices from the attachment menu, while classic Outlook commonly opens the file in the installed Word application.

Remember that Preview availability depends on Outlook’s previewer, matching Office installations, interface compatibility, and where the attachment is placed in the message. Word’s startup option is independent of those Outlook preview conditions.

FAQ

What are “other uneditable files” in the Word option?

The wording means the preference is broader than email attachments alone. It also covers files Word classifies as uneditable when they are opened, so the option can affect more than documents received through Outlook.

Why does an older Word release use “Full Screen Reading view”?

Microsoft has changed the label over time without changing the purpose of the preference. If your version uses the older phrase, select that option under Word’s startup settings; it is the equivalent control.

Can I preview an attachment that is embedded in the message text?

No. Outlook’s Reading Pane previewer does not preview attachments inserted inside the message body. Select and open the embedded file directly instead.

Does changing Word’s setting turn on Outlook’s previewer?

No. Word’s Reading View setting controls files opened in Word. Outlook Preview is controlled separately through Outlook’s attachment-preview settings and the compatibility of the installed Office applications.
