Because the game is not released or downloadable through Steam, it cannot be installed in a Steam library at this time. Steam’s library properties menu therefore cannot have a functioning Squadron 42 installation to scan. Do not treat the generic Steam option for verifying the integrity of an installed game as a present-day Squadron 42 repair procedure.

A store listing can be created before a game is ready to download. In this case, opening the page, following it, or seeing a planned release window does not create local game files. There is consequently nothing for Steam to compare against its depot data, and no Steam download, update, or launch failure can currently be repaired through a Squadron 42 verification command.
Roberts Space Industries (RSI) gives the same availability picture in its support article Where can I download Squadron 42?, updated February 4, 2026: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” RSI says accounts with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download it after development is complete, testing is finished, and the game has been released.
That pledge language is an access condition, not an indication that a current download is waiting in Steam or in the RSI Launcher. If your account includes a qualifying pledge, the relevant event is the eventual completion, testing, and release of the game. Until then, a missing download or missing Steam installation is expected availability status rather than proof that local files are corrupted.

What the current status means for a troubleshooting search
- “Not yet available” means there is no supported Steam installation to verify. The presence of a store page does not change that status.
- Q2 2027 is not a guaranteed launch day. It identifies a planned quarter. Steam can change the listing as development and release planning change.
- RSI’s February 4, 2026 help article is consistent with the Steam listing. It says Squadron 42 remains in development and is not available for download.
- A pledge does not provide an immediate installer. RSI says downloading follows development completion, testing, and release.

These are not two equivalent repair methods. Steam is currently a future distribution listing, while the RSI Launcher instructions are the documented route for checking files that the launcher actually manages. The distinction should be reassessed after Squadron 42 is released and RSI or Steam publishes platform-specific installation guidance.
Do not move files between platforms simply to make a verification button appear. A launcher can only reliably inspect the installation path and channel it is configured to manage. A folder that happens to contain similarly named files is not automatically a recognized installation.

- Open the RSI Launcher and sign in. Use the RSI account that owns the relevant game access or pledge. If you are signed into a different account, the launcher may not show the expected entitlement or installation.
- Open Settings. Verification is started from the launcher settings rather than from Steam’s Library properties. Do not look for a Steam command when the files are controlled by RSI’s launcher.
- Select the channel that matches the affected installation. RSI’s troubleshooting material uses channels such as
LIVEandPTUas examples. Choose the channel whose files are producing the download or launch problem; checking a different channel will not repair the files you intended to test. - Check the installation location shown in Settings. Compare the displayed path with the folder that actually contains the game files. RSI warns that a mismatched path can make the launcher behave as though the game is not installed, even when files exist elsewhere on the drive.
- Click VERIFY. Allow the launcher to inspect the installation and complete any corrective work it schedules. RSI says the process can download or install files it determines are necessary. That can include replacing broken data or restoring files that are missing from the selected installation.
- Wait for completion before launching. RSI recommends letting verification finish before running other resource-intensive programs or applications. Closing the launcher, interrupting a download, or starting another demanding task before the check ends can leave the repair incomplete.
When the process completes, try the affected launch or update again from the RSI Launcher. Verification is a file-repair step, not a promise that every launch, account, patching, or system problem will be resolved.
Before you click VERIFY
A short pre-check prevents the most common wasted runs:
- Confirm that you are using the RSI account associated with the installation.
- Identify whether the problem concerns the
LIVEchannel, thePTUchannel, or another channel shown by your launcher. - Locate the folder you believe contains the files and compare it with the path displayed in Settings.
- Close demanding applications so the launcher can complete its work without competing for system resources.
- Make sure you are prepared for the launcher to download or install files that it finds necessary.
These checks do not create a Squadron 42 download where none exists. They apply only when an RSI Launcher installation and its files are already present for the launcher to inspect.

Situations it does not automatically solve
- Wrong channel: A
LIVEand aPTUinstallation are separate targets in the launcher. Verifying one does not check the other. - Wrong path: If Settings points to a different folder from the one holding your files, the launcher may report that the game is absent instead of repairing the intended installation.
- Interrupted verification: Stopping the process before it finishes can leave required downloads incomplete.
- Non-file causes: Verification does not guarantee a fix for every launcher, account, operating-system, driver, network, or service problem.
- Unavailable product status: A verification control cannot substitute for an official release or download entitlement. If Squadron 42 is still listed as unavailable, there is no current Steam installation to repair.
If verification does not resolve the error
1. Recheck the channel and path first
Before changing or deleting anything, return to Settings and confirm both selections. Make sure the channel corresponds to the version you are trying to run and that the installation location is the folder where those files are stored. A path mismatch is especially easy to mistake for missing or corrupted data.

2. Let a second verification finish uninterrupted
If the first run was stopped, interrupted by a failed download, or followed by an immediate launch attempt, run VERIFY again and leave the launcher open until it reports completion. Keep resource-intensive programs closed while it works, as RSI recommends.
Do not judge the result by how quickly the button becomes available or by whether a progress display pauses briefly. The supported action is to let the launcher complete its inspection and any required download or installation.
3. Review the launcher log for recurring errors
RSI’s guidance for errors identified as 2000 or 50XX advises reviewing the launcher log when verification does not resolve the problem. The log can show whether the failure is recurring during file access, patching, or downloading and gives support a more specific symptom than a general “the game will not launch” report.
Record the exact error family and the point at which it returns. Repeatedly clicking VERIFY without noting a recurring 2000 or 50XX message does not provide additional diagnosis. The log is the appropriate next evidence when the basic channel and path checks have been completed.
4. Treat a full reinstall as the final step
RSI describes a complete reinstall as a last resort because Squadron 42 is a large download. Do not jump to this step before checking the channel, confirming the path, allowing VERIFY to finish, and reviewing the log. A reinstall removes the existing installation and requires the launcher to obtain the game data again once the title is available for download.

Once a real Steam installation exists, Steam’s own documented verification controls may become relevant, but the official sources checked here do not establish a currently usable Squadron 42 Steam verification workflow.

Do not assume that a future Steam build and an RSI Launcher build will use identical folders, channels, entitlements, or repair controls. Wait for instructions that identify the platform and installation type explicitly. If Steam publishes a dedicated Squadron 42 support path, follow that guidance for a Steam installation; if RSI continues to manage a separate installation, use the RSI-specific steps.
