What if Run does not open?
If the Run dialog does not appear, use Windows Search and enter the same command. If the command is mistyped, Windows may report that it cannot find the file; re-enter services.msc without spaces.

Start, stop, restart, pause, or resume a service
Right-click a service to see the actions available for its current state. Depending on the service, you can start it, stop it, restart it, pause it, or resume it. A service that is already stopped will not offer the same controls as a running service, and a service that does not support pausing may not show that action.
Use the state control named by a trusted troubleshooting procedure rather than changing several unrelated services at once. Stopping a dependency can affect another Windows feature even when the original service appears unrelated.

Read the service description and note its current settings before making a change. If you need to undo the change, the recorded original value gives you a precise restore point.
What do the Windows service startup types mean?
Windows uses four startup-type labels in the Services console: Automatic, Automatic (Delayed Start), Manual, and Disabled.

Is Services the same as Task Manager, Computer Management, or System Configuration?

services.msc is the detailed service console. Task Manager combines process monitoring, performance information, startup management, and a Services view with basic controls. Task Manager can open the full console through Open Services, but it is not a replacement for the Services Properties dialog.

Services versus Computer Management
Computer Management is an MMC container. Services is one component inside it, alongside administration areas for disks, devices, shared folders, and users. Open Computer Management when that wider context helps; open services.msc when you want to work only with services.

Services versus System Configuration (msconfig)
System Configuration is intended for startup troubleshooting. Its Services tab can selectively disable services, and on newer Windows versions its Startup tab opens Task Manager. That workflow is more sensitive than simply inspecting Services: Microsoft cautions that incorrect startup settings can make Windows unstable or prevent normal startup.
Use msconfig only when a troubleshooting procedure specifically directs you there. For ordinary service inspection or a named service correction, the Services console is the more focused tool.
What should I check before changing a service?
Opening Services is normally an inspection task. Before applying a change, use this checklist:
- Confirm the exact service name, not just a similar display name.
- Read the service description and identify the Windows feature or application it supports.
- Record the current startup type and current running or stopped state.
- Follow a trusted procedure that names the service and the intended setting.
- Change one service at a time so you can identify the effect.
- Restore the recorded setting if the change does not solve the problem or causes a new one.
Avoid disabling services simply because they are unfamiliar or because a guide promises a faster boot. Services can support networking, updates, security, hardware, and applications; an apparently harmless change can remove a dependency another feature needs.

First confirm that you selected the intended service and that the command is available for its current state. Some services cannot be paused, and a service may be controlled by another component. Reopen its Properties dialog, review the startup type, and compare the setting with the procedure you are following.
If the issue came from an experimental change, return the startup type to the value you recorded before troubleshooting. For startup problems caused through System Configuration, use the same tool to restore the prior startup selection rather than making unrelated changes in Services.

Can I open Services when Windows is only partly working?
If the desktop is responsive, Run, Search, Task Manager, and Computer Management provide separate launch paths. When one shell route is inconvenient, use another: for example, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and select Open Services.
These routes launch the same built-in management interface; they do not bypass the consequences of changing a service. If Windows is unstable, prioritize the exact recovery or troubleshooting instructions for the problem instead of testing several service settings.
