On a Windows PC, the quickest no-code route is Excel’s Analysis ToolPak: arrange one observation per row, enable the add-in, choose Data > Data Analysis > Regression, assign the dependent variable to Input Y Range and the predictors to Input X Range, then inspect coefficients, fit statistics and residual plots. LibreOffice Calc offers a similar spreadsheet workflow, while Python’s statsmodels is better when the analysis must be scripted and repeated. The software can calculate a least-squares model, but it cannot decide whether your variables are sensible, whether rows match correctly or whether an apparent relationship is causal. Those checks are your responsibility.
What does regression analysis do?
Regression estimates how a dependent variable changes in relation to one or more independent variables. In a simple linear model, the software fits a line; in multiple regression, it estimates a coefficient for each predictor while accounting for the others in the model. Excel’s Regression tool uses least squares and accepts one dependent variable with one or more independent variables.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor example, a game studio might model frame time from resolution, graphics settings and scene complexity. The coefficients describe the modeled association in the units of those variables. They do not prove that changing a predictor will cause the outcome to change, because confounding variables, selection effects and a poorly specified model can produce the same pattern.
What should I prepare before running a model?
Prepare the dataset before opening the regression dialog. A spreadsheet tool will execute the calculation you request; it will not determine whether the rows represent the same observations or whether the model makes scientific or business sense.

- Use one observation per row. A row might represent a match, player, session, device, day or other defined unit. Do not mix several units in the same table.
- Keep one dependent variable in one column. This is the outcome you want to explain or predict.
- Put independent variables in adjacent columns. These are the predictors supplied to the model.
- Make sure X and Y rows line up. The value in row 24 of every column must describe the same observation.
- Check that numeric cells are actually numeric. Text-formatted numbers, currency symbols embedded in cells and stray spaces can be treated as missing or invalid values.
- Handle missing values consistently. Decide whether to exclude incomplete observations or use a documented imputation method. Do not let different columns silently use different row sets.
- Plan categorical coding deliberately. A label such as “platform” or “difficulty” needs a numeric coding scheme that represents the comparison you intend. An arbitrary code can create a misleading slope.
- Define the sample. Record the time period, population and inclusion rules so another person can tell what each observation represents.
Add column headers if you want readable output. Headers are useful, but they must be excluded from the numerical ranges unless you select the Labels option in Excel.
How do I enable Excel’s Analysis ToolPak on Windows?
In Excel for Windows, enable the add-in through the desktop options menu before looking for the Regression command.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Excel and select File > Options.
- Select Add-Ins in the left pane.
- At the bottom, set Manage to Excel Add-ins, then select Go.
- Check Analysis ToolPak and select OK. If it is not installed, Excel may prompt you to install it.
- Return to the worksheet and open the Data tab. The Data Analysis command should now be available.
Microsoft’s support documentation covers Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019 and Excel 2016. The wording or location can vary slightly with the display language and update channel, so use the add-in search box if a label is not where you expect it.
How do I run a regression in Excel?
Use the following procedure for a standard linear regression. Keep the original workbook unchanged and save a working copy so that the source data and generated output remain auditable.
- Place the dependent variable in one column and the independent variables in neighboring columns. Put headers in the first row when they make the output easier to identify.
- Select Data > Data Analysis, choose Regression, and select OK.
- In Input Y Range, select the complete dependent-variable column for the observations. Include its header only if you will check Labels.
- In Input X Range, select the predictor columns covering the same rows. The X and Y ranges must contain the same number of observations.
- Check Labels when the first row of each selected range contains headers. Leave it unchecked when the ranges contain numbers only.
- Choose an output location: an output range on an existing worksheet or a new worksheet. A new worksheet is usually easier to review and less likely to overwrite data.
- Check Residuals when you want Excel to return predicted values and residuals for diagnostic work. You can also request residual plots if that option is available in your version.
- Select OK to fit the model. Retain the generated table with the workbook rather than copying only a few headline numbers into a separate document.
If Excel reports an input error, first verify that X and Y contain equal-length ranges, that the selected cells are numeric, and that the Labels setting matches the presence of headers. A blank row, a merged cell or a text value hidden among the observations can also prevent a clean run.
How do I read Excel’s regression output?
Read the output in a fixed order: identify the model, interpret coefficients in context, then examine uncertainty and fit. Do not choose a model solely because it has the largest fit statistic.
Coefficients
Each coefficient estimates the expected change in the dependent variable for a one-unit increase in that predictor, holding the other included predictors constant. The intercept is the model’s estimated outcome when every predictor equals zero; that condition may be outside the data or have no practical meaning. Always report the units. A coefficient of 0.4 seconds per megahertz means something different from 0.4 percentage points per additional player.

Standard errors, t statistics and p values
The standard error expresses sampling uncertainty under the model assumptions. Excel’s output also includes a t statistic and a p value for each coefficient. A small p value indicates that the coefficient is difficult to reconcile with a zero coefficient under the fitted model and its assumptions; it does not measure practical importance and does not establish causation.
R-squared and adjusted R-squared
R-squared describes the share of variation in the observed dependent variable accounted for by the fitted values in that sample. Adding predictors can increase it even when the new variables are not useful. Adjusted R-squared applies a penalty for model complexity, but neither statistic proves that the model will predict well on new data or that the relationship is causal.
ANOVA and the overall F test
The ANOVA section partitions variation into model and residual components and provides an overall test of whether the included predictors, taken together, improve on an intercept-only model under the stated assumptions. It is not a substitute for inspecting individual coefficients, residual patterns and the data-generating process.

A residual is the observed outcome minus the model’s fitted value. Save the residual columns when you run the tool; they are the basis for checking whether the line or plane has missed systematic structure.
How do I tell whether a regression is trustworthy?
Trust comes from the data design and diagnostics, not from a single number in the output. Classical linear regression assumes residuals are approximately normally distributed, independent, centered around zero and measured with roughly constant variance.
Make a residual-versus-fitted plot
Plot residuals on the vertical axis and fitted values on the horizontal axis. A roughly patternless cloud around zero is compatible with a useful linear form. A curve suggests nonlinearity; a funnel shape suggests changing variance; separate bands can indicate an omitted group or a categorical effect; and a time-ordered wave can indicate dependence.
Use a normal probability plot
A normal probability plot helps reveal heavy tails, skewness or unusually extreme residuals. Small departures can be tolerable in some settings, but strong departures warn that standard errors and significance tests may not behave as expected.

Check independence and ordering
If rows represent successive days, matches or measurements from the same person, examine residuals in collection order. Serial patterns or clusters mean the observations may not be independent. NIST’s guidance specifically covers residual plots, autocorrelation, outliers, leverage and influential observations.
Investigate outliers, leverage and influence
An outlier has an unusual outcome; a high-leverage observation has an unusual predictor combination; an influential point can materially change the fitted coefficients. Do not delete such a row merely because it weakens a preferred result. Verify the source, correct genuine data errors, and report a justified sensitivity analysis when the observation is valid.
NIST/SEMATECH emphasizes the value of graphical residual checks: “We emphasize the use of graphical methods to examine residuals.” Use plots alongside the numerical output rather than treating a p value or R-squared as a diagnostic.
What should I do when the assumptions fail?
First identify the failure and its likely cause; then choose a remedy that matches the data rather than silently accepting Excel’s default output.
Recommended Free Tools
- Curvature: consider a scientifically justified transformation, polynomial term or another model form, then inspect the new residuals.
- Changing variance: consider transforming the outcome, modeling the variance, using weighted least squares or using heteroscedasticity-robust standard errors in a tool that supports them.
- Serial dependence: account for ordering or clustered observations with a model that represents the dependence, rather than treating every row as independent.
- Non-normal or heavy-tailed errors: check for data problems and influential points; consider transformations or robust methods when appropriate.
- Strongly influential observations: verify the record, document the decision and compare results with and without the observation as a sensitivity analysis.
These remedies require statistical judgment. If the result will guide a high-stakes decision, obtain specialist advice instead of presenting the default ToolPak table as definitive.
What is the best Windows alternative to Excel?
LibreOffice Calc is the closest spreadsheet-style alternative, while Python with statsmodels is the better choice for scripted, repeatable analysis. The right option depends on whether speed of manual setup or reproducibility and model control matter more.
How do I run regression in LibreOffice Calc?
Open the spreadsheet and choose Data > Statistics > Regression. Calc supports linear, logarithmic and power regression, lets you set a confidence level, can calculate residuals and can force the intercept to zero.

Use the same preparation rules as in Excel: one observation per row, aligned X and Y ranges, deliberate categorical coding and documented missing-value handling. A zero-intercept model should be selected only when an outcome of exactly zero is theoretically required when every predictor is zero; forcing the intercept changes the model and can distort the other coefficients.
How do I run regression with Python and statsmodels?
A scripted workflow makes the data transformation, model specification and output reproducible. The official statsmodels documentation covers ordinary least squares, weighted least squares, generalized least squares and generalized least squares with autoregressive errors.
import pandas as pd
import statsmodels.api as sm
data = pd.read_csv("data.csv")
y = data["outcome"]
X = data[["predictor_1", "predictor_2"]]
X = sm.add_constant(X)
model = sm.OLS(y, X)
results = model.fit()
print(results.summary())
The constant column supplies the intercept explicitly. Keep the input file, the script, the package versions and the printed summary together. Before fitting, confirm that the selected columns are numeric and that rows with missing values are handled intentionally. The code above is an ordinary least-squares starting point, not a guarantee that OLS assumptions hold.
Which Windows regression tool should I choose?
Excel is quickest for a one-off graphical workflow; Calc is a spreadsheet alternative with several regression forms; statsmodels offers the clearest path to repeatable analysis and specialized model classes.
| Criterion | Excel Analysis ToolPak | LibreOffice Calc | Python statsmodels |

| Interface | Point-and-click Windows spreadsheet dialog. | Point-and-click spreadsheet dialog. | Code and data files. |

These are workflow distinctions, not a universal ranking. A carefully specified Calc model can be more useful than an improvised Python script, and a preserved Excel workbook can be adequate for a small, transparent analysis.
How can I troubleshoot common Windows regression problems?
Most failures occur before the calculation or in the interpretation of its output.
- “Data Analysis” is missing: enable Analysis ToolPak through File > Options > Add-Ins > Manage: Excel Add-ins > Go, then check the add-in and restart Excel if the command does not appear.
- Excel rejects the ranges: select equal-length X and Y ranges, remove accidental blank rows and verify that the Labels box matches your headers.
- Coefficients look impossible: inspect units, text-formatted numbers, duplicate rows, coding of categories and whether the intercept has been forced or omitted.
- R-squared is high but the model is unconvincing: examine residual plots, influential observations, time ordering and the possibility that the model is describing association rather than causation.
- Results change after adding a predictor: check whether predictors are measuring similar things, whether the added variable changes the usable row set, and whether a few high-leverage observations drive the difference.
- Different tools disagree: compare the exact rows, missing-value rules, intercept setting, transformations, confidence level and model definition before comparing numerical output.
How should I report a regression result?
A useful report lets a reader reproduce the model and judge its limitations without guessing what you did.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run regression without installing Excel?
Yes. LibreOffice Calc provides a spreadsheet workflow through Data > Statistics > Regression. Python with statsmodels is another Windows option when you are comfortable working from a script and want the model steps recorded explicitly.
Should I remove an outlier before fitting the model?
Not automatically. First verify whether the record is an entry or measurement error; if it is valid, report its influence and perform a documented sensitivity analysis rather than deleting it simply to improve fit.
Why do two regression programs produce different coefficients?
Usually the programs used different rows, missing-value rules, intercept settings, transformations or category coding. Recreate the exact model definition in both tools before treating the numerical difference as a software problem.
Does a significant regression coefficient prove that one variable causes another?
No. A p value evaluates a coefficient under the model and its assumptions. Causal conclusions require an appropriate design and controls for confounding that a standard regression dialog cannot supply.
