How to Plan Roads, Canals, and Buildings in a LEGO City Layout

Plan the transport network and water first, then fit buildings into the blocks that remain. Measure your table, adopt a repeatable module (32×32 studs is a practical starting point), draw roads, junctions, bridges and rail connections, reserve the canal corridor, and only then place architecture. Build one test neighborhood before expanding so you can verify turning clearance, walking routes, sightlines and removable access.

Start with the table, not the buildings

A convincing LEGO city is easier to expand when its underlying grid is decided before detailed scenes. Begin by measuring the surface you actually have available. Record usable width and depth, which sides you can reach, and anything that cannot move, such as a wall, support, radiator or piece of furniture. Note ceiling height if a shelf will hold stacked levels, and leave hand clearance at the front and rear where you expect to lift modules.

Draw the footprint on paper or in a simple digital plan. Mark the edge that viewers will see first, the side from which you will perform maintenance, and any doorway or aisle that must remain clear. A layout that fits mathematically but cannot be reached is not a workable city.

Adopt a repeatable module

Use a standard unit so streets, sidewalks and services line up when you rearrange the display. A 32×32-stud square is a defensible starting point: LEGO road-plate documentation uses 32-stud square plates for compatible road pieces, and the RenLUG collaborative standard documents 32×32 MILS modules. You can use smaller or larger sections, but choose one size and keep connector positions consistent.

Write the module rules beside your plan: road height, sidewalk depth, edge attachment points, allowable overhang and where utilities or lighting cables may pass. A module standard is more valuable than a particular building because it lets an entire district move as one piece.

Draw the transport skeleton before placing buildings

Roads determine block shapes, vehicle access and the locations where people cross. Sketch them as lines on your footprint before you place a single finished building.

Choose a main loop or spine

A loop gives vehicles an alternate route when a scene or bridge is removed. A spine is useful on a narrow shelf because every district can branch from one clear avenue. Many cities use both: a principal street along the long dimension and a perimeter loop that returns traffic to the start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mark T-junctions, four-way intersections only where they serve a purpose, pedestrian crossings, loading areas and any rail interface. Keep a service route to fire, police, waste and construction scenes; do not let a decorative plaza become the only path to the back of a block.

Use compatible road plates where they help

The LEGO City Road Plates 60304 set is identified by LEGO as a 2021, 112-piece road-plate set. It supplies a ready-made surface and markings that can quickly establish a street grid. LEGO also describes the 60236 road product as combining one straight plate and one T-junction plate, compatible with existing LEGO City sets. These products are useful when you want recognizable LEGO City geometry and quick connections to official vehicles and play features.

Do not assume every road-plate arrangement is automatically a complete traffic plan. Mark where a vehicle enters, where it turns, and where it exits the district. A repeated straight plate with no alternate route can create a visual road but a nonfunctional network.

Decide how intersections serve the scene

  • Through intersection: reserve it for streets that genuinely carry traffic from one district to another.
  • T-junction: use it to end a local street at a commercial frontage, canal edge or civic building without adding unnecessary crossing points.
  • Plaza or shared street: slow vehicles and emphasize pedestrians, deliveries and outdoor activity; test that emergency vehicles can still reach the buildings behind it.
  • Dead end: use sparingly and provide a turning or reversing area for the largest vehicle you plan to display.

Choose between official plates, custom roads and MILS

There is no single best road system. Compare the options against the way you build, move and share your city.

Approach Connector compatibility Typical module logic Road and sidewalk height Lifting and rearranging Canal and bridge integration Cost and collaboration
Official road plates Designed for LEGO road-plate connections and LEGO City vehicles 32-stud road-plate geometry Factory-defined surface; add your own frontage treatment Easy to lift as individual plates, but loose surrounding scenery can shift Requires a planned edge or transition where a plate meets water Fastest way to establish a familiar street; piece cost depends on the set and your inventory
Custom roads You define the connection points Any size, provided you document it Can match a chosen sidewalk or curb height exactly Excellent when built as removable plates or sections Most freedom for unusual banks, slopes and movable bridges Uses more design and part-selection time; another builder may not share your standard
MILS-style modules Uses a documented interface; RenLUG examples use 32×32 modules and adapt road plates to MILS-compatible construction Repeatable square modules Raised, standardized base with a consistent edge treatment Strong choice for lifting, storage and collaborative displays Works well when canal banks and bridge modules follow the same interface More base-building work up front, but easier to combine with other builders who use the same standard

Before committing, answer eight practical questions: Where do connectors land? Are sidewalks the same height at every seam? Can your widest vehicle clear a corner? Can a road module be lifted without dismantling a building? Does a canal bank have a repeatable edge? Can a bridge be removed independently? How many parts do you already own? Must the city connect to someone else’s display?

Set street spacing and building setbacks as design choices

No independent standard establishes a universal road-to-building ratio, canal width or traffic-capacity figure for LEGO cities. Treat those dimensions as variables to prototype rather than rules to quote.

Leave a deliberate transition between roads

An independent layout guide recommends inserting one or two rows of plain plates or building space instead of placing road plates directly back to back. That strip can become a sidewalk, planted verge, cycle route, parking bay or the first course of a building setback. It also gives your eyes a break between parallel roads and creates room for lamps, signs and trees.

Size setbacks around the scene

Set a building back far enough for its entrance, a minifigure path and any service activity you want to show. A shop may address the busiest street with a shallow forecourt; a factory can face a service lane; a house can use a garden or driveway to create privacy. Keep prominent civic and commercial buildings on connected, visible streets. Put residential, utility and industrial scenes on quieter interior or edge blocks where their less formal frontage looks intentional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prototype vehicle clearance

Place the longest and widest vehicle you intend to display on a test corner. Turn it through each junction, then test a parked vehicle, a minifigure on the sidewalk and a lamp or sign at the same time. If anything collides, change the corner or street edge before you multiply the module across the city.

Reserve the canal before filling the blocks

Water is not leftover space. Decide “water versus dry land” while the plan is still a set of lines, as recommended by the independent layout guide. Draw the canal as a corridor or district edge, then reserve land for banks, paths, bridges and removable access sections.

Choose a canal role

  • District edge: separates a historic or residential quarter from an industrial waterfront and needs crossings at selected points.
  • Central corridor: becomes a visual focus; roads must either run alongside it or cross on a deliberate rhythm.
  • Service canal: supports warehouses, docks and utility scenes, so leave loading frontage and a route for emergency access.

Keep the canal continuous in the plan even if the visible water is interrupted by a removable bridge. A continuous corridor makes the waterway read as a real geographic feature instead of disconnected blue patches.

Place bridges to preserve traffic flow

Every bridge is both a crossing and a potential bottleneck. Mark its approaches before you build the span. A main bridge should connect two useful roads, not land in a building entrance or a dead-end yard. A secondary pedestrian bridge can shorten walking routes without inviting every vehicle into a narrow district.

Build bridge approaches as their own modules. That lets you remove the span for canal maintenance, change a low crossing to a higher one, or replace a road bridge with a footbridge without rebuilding the banks.

Make the water edge maintainable

Use removable bank sections wherever you may need to retrieve a dropped element, change the water color or adjust a boat scene. Keep a narrow access path on at least one side of the canal, even when viewers will not see it. Avoid trapping a fixed building between water and a wall unless you can lift the building or the bank independently.

Build sidewalks, curbs and crossings as a system

Street edges make a city feel navigable. LEGO’s curb guide demonstrates modular curbs, crossings and a six-stud bike-lane example, and notes that curb sections can be modified to add steps or crossing points. Treat that modularity as a toolkit rather than a rigid prescription.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Define one edge vocabulary

  • Curb unit: the repeatable height and length used along ordinary streets.
  • Crossing unit: a section that lowers or marks the curb at a road crossing.
  • Step or ramp unit: a transition for raised sidewalks, plazas or canal paths.
  • Bike-lane unit: use the six-stud example where it suits your scale, then test it against building setbacks and parked vehicles.

Because the curb sections are separate, you can change a single frontage without demolishing the road. Keep the connector positions identical even when paving, color or furniture changes between districts.

Connect pedestrian routes to destinations

Mark a walking path from every residential block to a shop, civic building, park, station or canal crossing. Crossings should align with real destinations and with the side of the street where a minifigure would naturally emerge. A decorative crossing that leads into a wall or water edge wastes one of the most visible pieces of street infrastructure.

Zone and place buildings after infrastructure is fixed

Once roads, water and pedestrian edges are stable, divide the remaining land into blocks. Use zoning as a storytelling tool rather than a strict simulation.

Civic and commercial frontage

Place a town hall, station, market or other focal building on a connected, visible street. Give it a forecourt or plaza that can hold crowds without blocking the through route. Shops benefit from frequent crossings and short walking links; reserve service access behind or beside them so deliveries do not occupy the main avenue.

Residential interiors

Quieter homes can sit on interior streets or along a canal promenade. Give each entrance a plausible path, garden, stoop or shared courtyard. Vary setbacks slightly while keeping the underlying module seams hidden or intentional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Industrial and utility edges

Factories, depots and waterworks need wider service access and can occupy the edge of a road or canal district. Keep their loading faces away from the narrowest pedestrian route. If a scene includes hazardous-looking machinery or storage, a fence, buffer strip or change in paving can communicate the transition without adding another road.

Prototype one neighborhood before expanding

Build one complete test area containing at least one straight road, a junction, a building frontage, a canal edge and a crossing. Do not polish every facade yet. Use temporary plates and simple placeholders so revisions are cheap.

  1. Test vehicle movement. Drive or hand-turn the largest vehicle through every corner, bridge approach and service entrance.
  2. Test walking routes. Move minifigures from homes to shops, civic buildings and the canal crossing. Look for blocked sidewalks and crossings that do not connect.
  3. Test sightlines. View the module from the normal display side and from standing height. Confirm that the focal building is visible and that the canal reads as a continuous feature.
  4. Test access. Lift each module, remove a bridge, and reach the rear of every building without dismantling adjacent scenes.
  5. Test seams. Check road height, sidewalk depth, curb color and connector positions at every edge.
  6. Test change. Swap a building, add a parked vehicle or close a street temporarily. The layout should still have a route around the obstruction.

Photograph the prototype from the angles viewers will use and annotate collisions or awkward gaps. Fix the standard once, then repeat it; do not copy a flaw across six modules.

Expand districts without losing coherence

When the prototype works, add modules in batches: complete a road loop or canal segment before starting a dozen unrelated buildings. Keep the road height, sidewalk depth, connector locations and canal-bank treatment consistent. A deliberate district transition can change paving, curb color or architecture, but make the change at a clear boundary such as a bridge, plaza or gate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for storage and maintenance

Label modules underneath with a simple grid reference. Store bridges, removable banks and fragile trees separately. Leave enough slack in any lighting or motor wiring to lift a module without pulling neighboring connections. Keep a small repair box with spare curb units, road connectors and plain plates so a damaged edge can be restored without redesigning the street.

Keep the traffic story legible

As the city grows, periodically trace a route from each district to the main loop or spine. If a new building blocks the only route, add a connector street or change the zoning before decorating. Roads and canals should remain understandable at a glance: viewers need to see where vehicles go, where people cross and why a bridge exists.

A practical planning sequence

For a new display, the following order minimizes rework:

  1. Measure the table or shelf, access sides and fixed obstacles.
  2. Choose the module size and write down edge, sidewalk and road-height rules.
  3. Draw the main loop or spine, T-junctions, crossings, bridge locations and rail interface.
  4. Reserve the canal corridor, banks, paths and removable access sections.
  5. Insert the road system you selected: official plates, custom sections or MILS-style modules.
  6. Build curb, sidewalk and crossing units, including any six-stud bike-lane sections you want to test.
  7. Subdivide the dry land into civic, commercial, residential, service and industrial blocks.
  8. Prototype one neighborhood and run the vehicle, walking, sightline and lifting tests.
  9. Replace placeholders with detailed buildings only after the infrastructure passes those tests.
  10. Expand by repeating the standard and introduce district changes only at intentional boundaries.

Common planning mistakes and their fixes

  • Buildings first: roads become improvised gaps and emergency access disappears. Remove enough detail to redraw the transport skeleton.
  • Road plates back to back: sidewalks, trees and crossings have nowhere to go. Insert one or two rows of plain plates or building space as a deliberate edge.
  • One bridge for the whole city: a blocked span cuts off an entire district. Add a loop, a second crossing or a pedestrian alternative.
  • Unrecorded custom standards: every new module has a different seam. Write the connector, height and edge rules beside the plan and use a physical gauge.
  • Fixed canal scenery: a dropped piece or changed water scene forces demolition. Make banks and bridges removable from the beginning.
  • Decorative dead ends: vehicles cannot turn and pedestrians cannot reach destinations. Test the largest vehicle and a complete walking route before final detailing.
