You can play a flight simulator in a browser without installing a desktop game. For the quickest route, open Google Earth on a computer, choose Explore Earth, open Tools, and select Flight simulator. Use the arrow keys to pitch and roll, and Page Up or Page Down to change thrust. Switch the basemap to Satellite if you want to fly over recognizable imagery.
Google Earth’s simulator is an experimental, casual-exploration feature, not an aerodynamic training program. If you want a dedicated browser simulator with configurable keyboard, mouse, and joystick controls, open GeoFS instead. The two experiences are separate, and neither requires a controller to begin.

How do I launch the flight simulator in Google Earth?
Use Google Earth on a computer, not the Google Earth mobile app. The browser launch path is:
- Open Google Earth in a desktop browser.
- Choose Explore Earth when the start screen appears.
- Open the top Tools menu.
- Select Flight simulator.
The simulator should place you in a playable aircraft view. Click inside the simulation if you want to use mouse-guided controls. If the aircraft hits terrain, Google provides a You crashed! Restart action that returns you to a playable position.

Do not use Ctrl+Alt+A as the browser launch method. Google documents that shortcut for the installed desktop version of Google Earth; the web version uses the Explore Earth → Tools → Flight simulator menu path.
What are the Google Earth browser controls?
The browser version uses a small set of keyboard controls, so you can start with a normal computer keyboard.
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Increase thrust | Page Up |
| Decrease thrust | Page Down |
| Pitch and roll | Arrow keys |
| Mouse-guided control | Click inside the simulation to toggle it |
Use the arrow keys gently rather than holding one direction for a long time. Small inputs make it easier to keep the aircraft pointed where you intend, especially while you are learning how the simplified controls respond. Page Up and Page Down change thrust rather than directly steering the aircraft, so adjust thrust separately when you need to slow down or accelerate.
How do I use the mouse?
Click in the simulation window to toggle mouse-guided controls. The exact feel depends on where the pointer is and how the aircraft is moving, so the keyboard remains the simplest way to make deliberate corrections. If the aircraft begins turning unexpectedly, click again to return to the non-mouse control state and use the arrows.
How do I show real satellite imagery while flying?
Google Earth does not start with satellite imagery in the simulator. Change the basemap from Map to Satellite before or during your flight:
- Open the basemap control in Google Earth.
- Change the selection from Map to Satellite.
- Return to the simulator view and continue flying.
The Satellite setting lets you identify coastlines, cities, terrain, and other recognizable features more easily than the abstract default map. Three-dimensional buildings and high-resolution imagery stream in dynamically, so the scene may take time to fill in as you move.
Why is the Google Earth flight simulator slow or visually delayed?
Google streams 3D buildings and high-resolution imagery while you fly. At extreme speed, or on a low-bandwidth connection, new data can arrive after the aircraft has already moved beyond the currently loaded area. That can appear as temporary pauses, incomplete scenery, or delayed detail rather than a problem with the controls.

- Reduce thrust with
Page Downwhile scenery catches up. - Give the view time to finish loading before making another high-speed run.
- Use a computer browser rather than a phone or tablet.
- If the aircraft impacts terrain, choose You crashed! Restart and resume from the restored position.
The feature is designed for casual exploration and uses simplified flight physics. It does not model aircraft behavior with the fidelity required for aerodynamic training, so stalls, turns, landings, and acceleration should be treated as an accessible game-like experience rather than a realistic lesson.
Can I play Google Earth’s flight simulator on a phone?
No. Google’s web documentation does not support the simulator on mobile devices or in the Google Earth mobile app. Use a computer with a desktop browser for the browser version. A phone may open Google Earth, but that does not make the flight-simulator feature available through the supported web flow.
What is GeoFS, and how is it different from Google Earth?
GeoFS is a separate browser-based flight simulator. It is intended as a dedicated flight-sim interface and runs without installation in a modern browser. GeoFS says its global landscape is rendered with CesiumJS, and its instructions specify a browser compatible with WebGL 2.0.

| Best-supported use | Casual exploration using Google Earth imagery | Dedicated browser-based flight simulation |
| Main limitation | Experimental, simplified physics, and no mobile support | Browser and GPU performance can affect the experience |
Choose Google Earth when you want to launch quickly and explore imagery you already know. Choose GeoFS when a flight-sim-focused interface or configurable controller inputs matter more than Google Earth’s menu-based discovery experience. GeoFS is not a way to unlock Google Earth’s feature; it is an independent option.
How do I control an aircraft in GeoFS?
GeoFS provides quick-start controls for throttle, steering, landing gear, and braking. Its basic keyboard and mouse actions are:
| Action | GeoFS control |
|---|---|
| Increase or decrease throttle | + and - |
| Steer as a stick | Move the mouse |
| Landing gear | G |
| Braking | Space |
Mouse movement acts like a control stick, while the plus and minus keys alter throttle. Press G when you need to operate the landing gear and Space to brake. Because GeoFS is separate from Google Earth, these keys do not change the Google Earth controls.
How do I configure a joystick or controller in GeoFS?
GeoFS supports optional joystick and controller configuration, but axes and buttons are not assigned automatically by default. Open the options panel, choose the keyboard or joystick configuration area, and assign each axis or button to the action you want.

- Connect the joystick or controller to the computer.
- Open GeoFS’s options panel.
- Select the control-configuration section.
- Move an axis or press a button when prompted, then assign it to the corresponding flight action.
- Test the assignment at low speed before attempting a long flight.
A connected controller may require you to press a button before the browser detects it. If no input appears, reconnect the device, click the simulator window, and try a button press again before repeating the assignment process. You can begin entirely with keyboard and mouse controls, so a joystick is an optional improvement rather than a requirement.
What computer and browser setup do I need?
For Google Earth, the supported browser flow requires a computer and a desktop browser. Google’s web documentation specifically excludes mobile devices and the mobile app. The simulator also depends on streaming 3D data, making connection speed and available graphics performance relevant when detailed terrain or buildings are loading.
For GeoFS, use a modern browser with WebGL 2.0 support. WebGL is the browser graphics technology GeoFS uses to display its global landscape, so an outdated browser, disabled graphics acceleration, or an incompatible GPU can prevent the scene from rendering correctly or reduce performance.
- Update the desktop browser before troubleshooting a blank or unstable scene.
- Keep the browser window active while assigning controller inputs.
- Close demanding browser tabs if the simulator stutters.
- Reduce speed while streamed scenery is loading.
Which browser simulator should I choose?
Your choice depends on whether you want immediate exploration or a more dedicated control setup.
Choose Google Earth when you want:
- The shortest launch sequence: Explore Earth → Tools → Flight simulator.
- Satellite imagery and familiar geographic landmarks.
- A casual, experimental experience with minimal setup.
- Keyboard controls that work without buying accessories.
Choose GeoFS when you want:
- A standalone browser flight-simulator interface.
- Mouse-as-stick controls and dedicated throttle keys.
- Configurable joystick or controller axes and buttons.
- An experience built around a WebGL 2.0-capable browser.
Neither option should be presented as a substitute for certified flight training. Google explicitly frames its simulator as casual exploration, and browser performance can affect either product. Treat the controls as game inputs and use the experience to explore, practice navigation habits, or learn the layout of a new region.
Do I need to buy a flight joystick?
No. Google Earth can be played with the keyboard and optional mouse control, and GeoFS supplies keyboard and mouse controls before any controller is connected. A USB flight-simulator joystick is an optional accessory for someone who prefers physical axes and buttons in GeoFS.
GeoFS documents controller support but does not require a particular model. Compatibility depends on the device, browser, operating system, and how the controller is detected, so do not assume that any specific joystick will work without testing it. Configure and test the device in GeoFS before relying on it for a flight.

What should I expect from the physics and visuals?
Google Earth’s simulator prioritizes accessible exploration over realism. Its simplified physics are suitable for experimenting with direction, thrust, and terrain, but they should not be interpreted as a high-fidelity representation of aerodynamic forces or aircraft certification procedures.
Visual detail is also streamed rather than guaranteed to be present immediately. Satellite imagery, 3D buildings, and high-resolution terrain may appear progressively, particularly after a rapid change of location. Slowing the aircraft gives the browser more time to receive and display the surrounding data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I recover from common problems?
The Flight simulator option is missing
Confirm that you opened Google Earth in a desktop browser and selected Explore Earth. The mobile app and mobile-device experience do not support this web simulator. Also use the browser menu path rather than the desktop-only keyboard shortcut.
The aircraft crashes immediately
Use You crashed! Restart to restore a playable position. After restarting, reduce thrust with Page Down and make smaller arrow-key corrections instead of holding a direction continuously.
The scene is blank or details are missing
Allow streamed 3D data to load, slow down, and check that the browser is running on a computer. In GeoFS, verify WebGL 2.0 compatibility and update the browser if the global landscape does not render.

Keep the simulator focused, press a controller button once, and reopen the options panel if necessary. GeoFS notes that a connected controller may need this initial button press before the browser detects it. If it still does not appear, test the keyboard controls to separate a device-detection problem from a simulator problem.
Can I use a controller with Google Earth?
The browser instructions center on arrow keys, Page Up/Page Down, and the mouse toggle; they do not describe a controller-mapping workflow for the web feature. If configurable joystick axes are your priority, GeoFS is the better fit because its instructions explicitly cover controller setup.

Is a browser flight simulator suitable for learning to fly?
It can help you become familiar with basic directional inputs, throttle changes, map orientation, and the visual relationship between an aircraft and terrain. It cannot replace instruction, an approved simulator, or real-world procedures because Google’s implementation uses simplified physics and is expressly designed for casual exploration.
For recreational play, start slowly, switch to Satellite imagery when you want geographic context, and use the restart action rather than repeatedly reopening the page after a crash. For more involved browser practice, GeoFS adds configurable controls while retaining the convenience of running without installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play a browser flight simulator without installing anything?
Yes. Google Earth’s web simulator launches from the browser menu, and GeoFS describes itself as playable in a modern browser without installation. Both options still depend on a compatible computer, browser graphics support, and a connection capable of loading scenery.
Why does my browser flight simulator show blurry or missing terrain?
Terrain, buildings, and high-resolution imagery may be streamed after the aircraft arrives, especially at high speed. Reduce thrust and wait for the scene to populate; in GeoFS, also verify WebGL 2.0 support and graphics acceleration.
Can I remap the Page Up and Page Down keys in Google Earth?
The web instructions document those keys as the thrust controls but do not provide a browser remapping panel. If you need assignable axes or buttons, use the controller-configuration options offered by GeoFS instead.
Does GeoFS require a paid plan to take off?
The core browser experience and its documented keyboard, mouse, and controller setup do not require a purchase. GeoFS pages mention optional enhanced-imagery plans, but basic flying can begin without one.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What should I do if my laptop has no Page Up key?
