You can play classic games through authorized subscription libraries, individual digital re-releases, or standalone collections. Which route works depends on the exact game, your platform and region, whether you want a subscription or a one-time purchase, and whether the game is downloaded or streamed.
How can I play classic games legally?
Start with official offerings from the game’s publisher or platform holder. Nintendo identifies three distinct routes for older games: Nintendo Classics libraries, eShop releases, and packaged collections. These options are not interchangeable, and no single subscription should be assumed to include every classic.
This guide covers those officially offered routes; it is not a universal legal ruling about emulators, ROM files, backups, imports, or older physical copies. Rules can depend on the title and jurisdiction. For a specific legal question, consult authoritative guidance where you live.
How do I access the classic games library?
Nintendo Classics through Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online members have ongoing access to the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy classic libraries. Nintendo’s support instructions also cover libraries for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube across Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with membership requirements varying by library. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ and access instructions for the current requirements and details.

Membership access is not the same as owning a game outright. Nintendo says an internet connection may be needed periodically to validate membership. Its FAQ also says there is no set schedule for new releases, so do not choose a subscription on the assumption that a particular game will be added by a certain date.
One hardware detail can matter: Nintendo’s classic-games catalog says Virtual Boy games require a dedicated Virtual Boy accessory. Check the local catalog for the titles and requirements available to you.

PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog
PlayStation offers a Classics Catalog through PlayStation Plus, but access depends on the selected plan and the individual game. The official PlayStation Plus catalog specifies that PS3 classics are streaming only. That makes your internet connection and streaming setup part of the decision; check the listing for the specific title and your region before subscribing.
Do I need a subscription or can I buy a collection?
No: a subscription is only one route. Individual digital re-releases and standalone collections can be better fits if you want a particular title or prefer a one-time purchase. Availability varies by game, platform, and territory, so check the relevant official storefront or product page.

Individual digital re-releases
Nintendo lists eShop releases alongside Nintendo Classics and packaged collections as ways older titles are made available. A storefront release can let you buy a specific game without relying on a subscription library, but there is no single complete list here of current individual re-releases. Search the official store for the exact title and confirm the supported system and region.
Standalone collections
A collection bundles a curated group of games into one product. For example, Atari describes Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration as an interactive journey through 50 years of video-game history, with more than 100 playable classics and six new titles. Atari lists Nintendo Switch and PlayStation among the supported platforms. Those figures describe the product’s contents, not an independent market statistic; check the listing for the specific edition and platform you plan to buy.

How to choose the right route
Before paying, compare the practical details that determine whether the option will actually work for you:
- The exact games: Confirm that the titles you want are included or sold individually; a library label does not guarantee a particular game.
- Platform and region: Check the live local catalog or storefront for your system and country.
- Payment model: Determine whether access requires an ongoing subscription or a one-time purchase.
- Play method: Check whether the game downloads or streams. PlayStation’s catalog identifies PS3 classics as streaming only.
- Access validation: Nintendo says periodic internet access may be needed to validate membership for Nintendo Classics.
- Hardware and accessories: Check for system compatibility and extra equipment; Nintendo’s catalog specifies a dedicated Virtual Boy accessory for Virtual Boy games.
Use the official listing for the exact title as the final check: catalogs, plan requirements, compatibility, and regional availability can change.
