How to host or join a co-op session
- Progress through “Call the Cavalry” until you reach Emma’s mansion and co-op becomes available.
- Open the game’s co-op or online settings and choose the option to play with others.
- Have one player host; the other players join that session. Dead Island 2 uses peer-to-peer sessions and supports up to three players total, including the host.
Deep Silver says the three-player cap was chosen to keep combat challenging while preserving the intended zombie encounter balance. The statement appears in its official co-op guide.

Check the platform family first. Steam and Epic players can play together on PC, but PC and console cross-play, or PlayStation-to-Xbox cross-play, is not supported. Consoles support cross-generation co-op within the same family, subject to the publisher’s hosting restrictions below.

Console generation and choosing a host
Deep Silver’s published co-op guidance says PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, can host. Base PS4 and Xbox One S can join but cannot host under those stated restrictions. For a cross-generation console session, the publisher recommends using the latest-generation console as host. These are the publisher’s launch-era connection rules; consult its current support notes if invitations fail on a particular console.

Why can’t a friend join?
Compare each player’s story progress. A player cannot join a session that has progressed beyond their own current story point, so the host may need to load an earlier point or the group may need to continue separately until everyone catches up. Players keep their progress, items and stats, and completing missions can award achievements or trophies. These progress rules are described in PLAION’s co-op progression support article.

- Confirm the player who is hosting has reached the co-op unlock.
- Check that the group uses a supported platform family and, on PC, that cross-play is enabled where needed.
- For Steam-to-Epic play, verify the Epic account link used to synchronize friends lists.
- On PlayStation, make sure the player joining has PS Plus for online play.
- On consoles, check the host system’s generation and model against the published restrictions.
- Make sure the host’s story point is not ahead of the joining player’s progress.
