To play an Xbox One or Xbox Series digital game on another console, sign in there with the Microsoft account that owns the game and install it from that account’s game library. To let other people use the game on that console without the owner signed in, make it the owner’s Home Xbox. These are different license routes: the account license follows the account; the device license is assigned to the Home Xbox.
Play your digital game on another Xbox One or Xbox Series console
- Connect the destination console to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account that bought or redeemed the game.
- Open your games library, locate the title among games owned by that account, and install it.
- Launch the game while signed in as the owner. Microsoft permits access to Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games on a reasonable number of compatible consoles, but a given game can be played on only one console at a time.
If you play on the second console while someone else uses the Home Xbox, the other person can play there under a different account. The owner’s account license is being used on the roaming console, while the Home Xbox uses its device license.

Let other people play on the destination console
If the console should allow its other users to play eligible games without the purchasing account signed in, designate it as that account’s Home Xbox. On the console, open Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox and choose the option to make it your Home Xbox. Menu wording can vary by console software version.

Avoid changing it casually if you may be near that limit.

The Home Xbox device license is also the route for sharing eligible games and content when the owner is not signed in, including when using the console offline. This does not mean every game feature or service works without an internet connection; some content may need a license refresh or online access.
Check which kind of Xbox game license you have
Xbox One or Xbox Series digital purchase
Use the account-sign-in and library-install steps above. A digital license does not guarantee that a title is available or compatible on every Xbox generation, so check the specific game if the destination console is older or the title is no longer listed for installation.

Xbox 360 digital purchase
Moving or copying a game file to another Xbox 360 does not move its device license. Transfer the content storage as needed, then sign in on the destination 360 with the Microsoft account associated with the license. If you want to play the 360 title on Xbox One or Xbox Series, first check compatibility for that exact game using Microsoft’s backward-compatibility lookup; not every 360 game is supported.

A participating digital Play Anywhere title can be played on a compatible Xbox and Windows PC, and its progress is associated with the player’s gamertag. It is still one device at a time for that game. Check the individual game’s Play Anywhere status and PC system requirements before installing it on Windows.

Physical disc or disc-to-digital entitlement
A standard disc-based game still requires its qualifying disc for play. Xbox announced a disc-to-digital feature on August 26, 2026: Xbox Vice President, Next Generation Jason Ronald said that players could claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a console and launching the game. However, eligibility is limited to supported discs, and Microsoft’s current usage rules condition the entitlement on continued possession of the qualifying disc; the entitlement may be revalidated or revoked if you no longer possess it.
