There is no single “turn off parental controls” switch on PS5. A family manager or authorized parent/guardian must open Family Management and loosen the specific restriction affecting the account—such as game age limits, communication, playtime, spending, or web content.
On the PS5, go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child account, open the relevant control, and choose the least restrictive option available. The exact labels can vary by region, account type, and PS5 system software.

The quickest way to remove PS5 parental controls
- Sign in with the family manager account, or an adult account appointed as a parent/guardian.
- Open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Select Family Management.
- Choose the affected child account.
- Open the restriction you want to change.
- Choose the least restrictive available option, then save or confirm.
Sony may display options such as Do Not Restrict, Allow, Not Restricted, a higher age level, or an individual game exception. Do not expect every menu to contain a button literally called “Turn Off.” See Sony’s PS5 support guidance and family-management instructions.
After changing a setting, sign out of the child account and sign in again. If a game or app is still blocked, close and relaunch it or restart the PS5.

What PS5 parental controls include
“Parental controls” is a collection of separate settings, not one lock. Depending on the account and region, Family Management can control:
- Game and app age levels
- Allowed-game exceptions and game requests
- Online communication, messaging, parties, and user-generated content
- Playtime schedules and daily limits
- Monthly spending
- Web browsing and online-content age filtering
- Blu-ray and DVD access
- PlayStation VR and PS VR2 access
- Privacy settings
- Guest login, new-user creation, and other console restrictions
Identify the symptom first. A blocked game, disabled voice chat, expired playtime, and refused purchase may all look like “parental controls,” but they are changed in different places.
Turn off restrictions for games and apps
- Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child account.
- Open the games-and-apps or gameplay-restriction setting.
- Raise the permitted age level or allow the specific game if that option is available.
- Save the change.
For one blocked game, an individual exception is usually less disruptive than raising the permitted age level for every game. A child may also request access to a blocked game; the family manager can approve or deny that request. Availability and exact choices can vary by country or region. Sony describes these controls in its PlayStation Family app support.
Recommended Free Tools
Allowing a game does not necessarily enable everything inside it. Communication, spending, playtime, account-age restrictions, and the game’s own parental settings may still apply.
Turn on online communication

- Open Family Management and select the child account.
- Open the communication or content settings. In the PlayStation Family app, the path is Parental Controls > Online Communication.
- Allow the features the child needs.
- Save the change and relaunch the game or communication app.
Some games have separate voice-chat, text-chat, or privacy controls. If PS5 communication is allowed but chat still fails, check the game’s settings and whether the player is using a feature controlled by the game publisher.
Remove PS5 playtime limits
- Sign in as the family manager or authorized parent/guardian.
- Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child.
- Set or verify the child’s time zone.
- Open Playtime Settings.
- Choose Do Not Restrict, or remove the daily schedule or limit.
- Save the change.
Sony says playtime controls can apply across PS5 and PS4 consoles used by the child account. Therefore, changing this setting may affect access on both systems. If the child has already been logged out because the limit ended, change the setting first and then sign in again. See Sony’s playtime-control instructions.
Change spending restrictions
Spending is an account-level family setting, not simply a lock on one PS5. The family manager can change it through PlayStation Account Management:
- Sign in to Account Management.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child account.
- Edit the Monthly Spending Limit.
- Set the permitted amount and save.
The limit controls purchases charged against the family manager’s wallet. It does not give the child unrestricted access to the family manager’s payment method. For additional purchase security, Sony separately offers Require Password at Checkout; that setting is distinct from parental controls.
Change controls with the PlayStation Family app
The PlayStation Family app lets a parent manage many settings without using the console:

- Choose the setting to change and save or confirm it.
The app supports controls for games and apps, communication, content, privacy, spending, and playtime. Some features may be app-only or unavailable in particular countries or regions. Details are available in Sony’s PlayStation Family app guide.

An adult account generally does not use the same child-account controls. However, access can still be affected by a PS5 console restriction passcode, a login passcode, disabled guest or new-user access, privacy settings, or account and payment-security settings.
A family manager can remove an adult family member through Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management or Account Management. Removing an adult parent/guardian also removes that person’s ability to set parental controls. This does not work for a child member.
Can an eligible child account become an adult account?
Sony allows an eligible child account to be upgraded to an adult account. The account holder must follow Sony’s upgrade process, and the upgrade cannot be reversed. Upgrading changes the account category; it is not a temporary way to remove one blocked-game restriction.
For a single game or feature, edit the relevant control instead. Consider an upgrade only when the account holder is eligible and understands the permanent account-status change. See Sony’s account support information.

Forgot the PS5 console restriction passcode?
The console restriction passcode is separate from the PSN account password, child-account password, and PS5 login passcode. It protects the console’s family and restriction settings.
To change a known passcode, sign in as the family manager and go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > PS5 Console Restrictions. Enter the existing code, select Change Your Console Restriction Passcode, then enter and confirm a new four-digit code.
If no custom console restriction passcode has ever been set, Sony lists the default as 0000. That is not a universal bypass: it will not work if someone previously created a custom code, and it does not reset an account password or login passcode.
If the code is forgotten, Sony’s guidance requires resetting the PS5. A reset deletes user data, games, and personalized settings and cannot be undone. Back up saved data and other important information first if possible. Do not rely on random codes, “master codes,” unofficial tools, or changing the PSN password. Sony distinguishes a full reset from restoring default settings: restoring defaults does not erase user or game data, while resetting the console does.
Why parental controls are still active
- Wrong account role: only the family manager or appointed parent/guardian can normally change a child’s controls.
- Wrong family member: confirm that you selected the account actually being used.
- Wrong restriction: check whether the problem is game age, communication, playtime, spending, privacy, or guest access.
- Synchronization: ensure the PS5 is online and signed in to PlayStation Network, then restart the game or console.
- Separate game settings: inspect the game’s own communication or parental-control menu.
- Console restriction: a passcode may be blocking changes to the console’s settings.
- Account status: an adult account, child account, local user, and guest account do not have identical controls.
If the family manager cannot access or manage the family, contact PlayStation Support. A child cannot legitimately bypass the family manager by creating an unrestricted local profile when new-user creation and guest login have been disabled.
Prevent the settings from being changed later
- Set a unique PS5 console restriction passcode rather than relying on 0000.
- Use a separate login passcode for accounts that need protection.
- Disable new-user creation and guest login if unrestricted local profiles are a concern.
- Protect the family manager account with a strong password and appropriate account security.
- Use an individual game exception instead of broadly raising age limits when only one title is needed.
These settings are managed separately, so securing the console requires checking both the family controls and the console-access controls.
