If your PS5 keeps turning off, first check whether it is actually shutting down or entering Rest Mode. An orange indicator means Rest Mode, while no light means the console is off. If the problem is a genuine power loss, work through these fixes in order—from a complete power cycle and cable check to Safe Mode recovery and, only as a last resort, system-software reinstallation.
Before troubleshooting: check the indicator light
Use the console’s light to identify what happened:

- Solid white: the PS5 is on.
- Blinking white, solid blue, or blinking blue: the console may be frozen or experiencing an error.
- Blinking white, then off: the PS5 is shutting down normally.
- Solid orange: the PS5 is in Rest Mode, not fully powered off.
- No light: the console is off.
Do not use the frequently repeated “pulsing red light means an overheating PS5” diagnosis. Sony’s current indicator guide lists pulsing red under PS4 indicators, not PS5 indicators.
1. Perform a complete power cycle
A full power cycle clears temporary power and software states and should be your first fix.

- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Power > Turn Off PS5. Do not choose Rest Mode.
- Wait until the power indicator is completely off.
- Unplug the AC cable from the console.
- Wait several minutes, then reconnect the cable and turn on the PS5.
Never unplug the console while the indicator is solid or blinking. Sony warns that doing so can corrupt data or damage the PS5. If the console is frozen, Sony’s guidance is to unplug it, wait three minutes, reconnect it, and turn it on. See Sony’s power-indicator guidance.
2. Make sure it is not entering Rest Mode
Rest Mode can look like a shutdown if you expect the console to go completely dark. A solid orange light means the PS5 is still in its power-saving state. In Rest Mode, it may continue charging controllers, downloading or installing content, and suspending a game or app.
For a clean test, always use Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5. If the console only appears to “turn off” when you select Rest Mode, the behavior is not a random shutdown.

Turn off the PS5, unplug it, and let it cool before moving or inspecting it. Place it in an open, well-ventilated area and make sure dust, walls, furniture, or other devices are not blocking the vents.
If you remove a cover, reinstall it correctly before using the console. Sony’s newer safety documentation for the CFI-2000, CFI-2100, and CFI-7000 model groups warns that incorrectly installed covers can cause the main unit to overheat. Do not remove covers while the console is hot. Ventilation is worth checking, but an unexpected shutdown is not proof of overheating; Sony’s current support guidance does not identify overheating as the universal cause.

4. Check the power, HDMI, and USB cables
A loose or defective cable can make the PS5 appear dead or prevent it from displaying an image. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the power cable, HDMI cable, and controller USB cable. If possible, test with another compatible cable of the relevant type.
A blank screen does not necessarily mean the console has powered off. If Safe Mode will not appear, Sony specifically recommends testing different USB, HDMI, and power cables, attempting to start Safe Mode after each change. Use a controller connected by USB when testing Safe Mode.
5. Install the latest PS5 system software
When the console reaches the Home screen, update it through the normal interface:
Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software

If Update Available appears, install it and restart the console. The current menu uses the label System Software; Sony does not provide a separate “firmware” menu in these instructions.

While troubleshooting controller-related behavior, also check Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. DualSense updates are also included with PS5 system-software updates. Sony’s current instructions are available on its PS5 system-software support page.
6. Retry a failed or stuck update
If a system-software download failed, do not immediately reset the console. Press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system-software update, select View Error Info, and choose Try Again.
If repeated online downloads fail, move to the USB update method below. A failed update can leave the console unable to start normally, in which case Safe Mode may be required.
7. Update the console through Safe Mode
Use Safe Mode when the PS5 cannot reach the Home screen or normal updating does not work:

- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the physical power button. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Connect a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
- Select Update System Software.
Safe Mode is entered with the console’s physical power button—not by holding the PS button on the controller. See Sony’s Safe Mode instructions.
8. Repair storage and rebuild the database
From Safe Mode, start with Repair Console Storage. Sony says this option does not erase data and is intended for startup or storage problems.
If the issue continues, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. The PS5 scans the storage drive and creates a new database. This is not a factory reset and should not be confused with deleting all console data.

If corrupted or incorrect settings are contributing to the shutdowns, restore the PS5’s default settings:
Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings > Restore

You can also select Restore Default Settings in Safe Mode. Sony states that this resets settings but does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data stored on the console. It is different from Reset PS5, which removes user data.
10. Reinstall system software or contact PlayStation Repairs
Use a full system-software reinstallation only after backing up anything you need. In Safe Mode, select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). This deletes all user data and removes the PS5 system software, making it the equivalent of a factory reset.
For the USB procedure, format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create this exact uppercase structure:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPThen start Safe Mode and select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free USB space for the update procedure and approximately 1.2 GB for reinstallation. Use a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller connected by USB. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions and do not confuse Restore Default Settings with Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
If the PS5 still turns off while playing, loses power shortly after startup, freezes, or will not turn on after power cycling, cable checks, ventilation checks, updates, and Safe Mode recovery, treat it as a possible hardware fault. Sony routes these symptoms to its PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool. Persistent shutdowns should be diagnosed there rather than attributed automatically to overheating.
What to do first
For most cases, use this order: confirm the indicator state, perform a complete power cycle, check ventilation and cables, install system software, then use Safe Mode to repair storage or rebuild the database. Reserve system-software reinstallation for consoles that remain unstable after the non-destructive fixes, and back up data before using it.
