Kirby’s Epic Yarn is not available natively on Nintendo Switch. The original game is a Wii release, with a Wii U download edition, while the revised portable game, Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn, is for the Nintendo 3DS family. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says Switch systems cannot run Wii U or Nintendo 3DS software, either from a disc, cartridge or download. To play today, use a compatible Wii with the original disc, a Wii U that already owns its download entitlement, or a 3DS-family system with a physical or previously purchased digital copy of Extra Epic Yarn.
Can you play Kirby’s Epic Yarn on Nintendo Switch?
No. There is no documented native Nintendo Switch release of Kirby’s Epic Yarn or Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn. A Switch cannot launch the Wii version, the Wii U download version or the 3DS remake.

Nintendo’s support explanation is explicit: Switch cannot play Nintendo 3DS or Wii U software. That applies to both packaged and downloaded games. Consequently, buying a Wii disc, locating a former Wii U download listing or inserting a 3DS cartridge into another device will not create a Switch version. A Switch cartridge for this game is not an official product.
The practical choice is therefore a piece of original hardware. Pick the Wii release if you want the original presentation, or choose the 3DS remake for portable play and its extra modes.

Nintendo’s product information identifies Kirby’s Epic Yarn as a Wii game and lists a Wii U download version. The Wii release page is dated 2011. Nintendo’s 3DS product page dates Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn to 8 March 2019 and describes it as a Nintendo 3DS-family title.
How to play the original Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Route 1: Use a compatible Wii and the original disc
This is the straightforward way to experience the original game.
- Obtain a compatible Wii console and an original Kirby’s Epic Yarn Wii disc.
- Connect the Wii to a television and power it on.
- Insert the game disc and select the game from the Wii menu.
- Use the Wii controls supported by the game to begin a new save or continue an existing one.
This route gives you the Wii edition rather than the later remake. If you are buying second-hand, look specifically for the phrase “Kirby’s Epic Yarn Wii.” Check that the listing is for a Wii disc, inspect the disc and case condition, and confirm that the seller’s stated region matches your console before paying. Availability and condition vary because these are older physical products.
Route 2: Redownload a Wii U copy you already own
A Wii U can run the Wii U download version only when the account on that console previously obtained the game. Nintendo ended new Wii U eShop purchases on 27 March 2023, so a reader who never bought the download cannot create a new Wii U purchase now.
Nintendo says that previously obtained Wii U games and downloadable content remain redownloadable after the shop closure, and software updates remain available. If your account owns the title, use the Wii U’s redownload function, install the game and launch it from the Wii U menu. If the game is absent from your account history, this route does not provide a new legal purchase.

The Wii U download is still the original Epic Yarn experience. It is not a Switch edition and does not convert the game into a portable 3DS title.
How to play Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn on a 3DS
Physical-cartridge route
Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn is the portable remake for the Nintendo 3DS family, released on 8 March 2019. To play it now, use a compatible 3DS-family system and a physical cartridge.

- Insert the cartridge into the system while it is powered off or at the home menu, following the console’s normal game-card procedure.
- Select the game icon from the 3DS home menu and start the software.
When shopping for a used copy, search for “Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn 3DS” and verify that the listing is a 3DS game card rather than the Wii original. Check the cartridge condition, region information supplied by the seller and return policy before ordering.
Previously purchased digital route
A digital copy works only if it was obtained before new Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases ended on 27 March 2023. Nintendo’s post-closure policy allows previously obtained games and downloadable content to be redownloaded, and it continues to provide software updates. Sign in on the 3DS system associated with the purchase, open the system’s redownload area, select the game and install it.
If you never purchased the digital version before the closure, the eShop does not offer a new purchase route. In that case, a physical cartridge is the practical official option.

What Extra Epic Yarn changes
The 3DS game is a remake, not merely a different way to launch the Wii software. Nintendo’s 3DS description calls out several version-specific additions:

- Additional transformations: extra forms are part of the 3DS edition’s content.
- Devilish Mode: an added mode that changes the challenge and rules compared with the original presentation.
Choose Extra Epic Yarn when portability, the added abilities or the extra mode matter more than preserving the Wii release exactly. Choose the Wii disc when you specifically want the original console version or already own a Wii copy.

Hardware access should decide first. If you own a working Wii and find the original disc, that is the cleanest path to the 2011 game. If you own a 3DS and want to play away from a television, the 2019 remake is the relevant version. Neither choice requires, nor permits, a Switch console.
What the eShop closures mean in practice
New purchases are closed
Nintendo ended new Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases on 27 March 2023. You should not expect to open either store and buy Epic Yarn or Extra Epic Yarn for the first time.
Existing ownership remains usable
Nintendo’s support policy says users can still redownload games and downloadable content they previously obtained on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems. Software updates also remain available. This distinction is important: an old purchase can remain accessible, but an account with no purchase history cannot use the closed store to obtain a new copy.

Physical copies are separate from eShop ownership
A Wii disc or 3DS cartridge does not depend on making a new eShop purchase. Inspect the physical item and confirm the system listed by the seller. A 3DS cartridge is for a 3DS-family console; a Wii disc is for Wii hardware. Neither format is readable by Switch.

“I will download it from the Switch eShop.”
There is no documented native Switch release. The fix is to use Wii hardware for the original or a 3DS-family system for the remake.
“Switch is backward compatible with Wii U, so my Wii U copy should work.”
Nintendo’s support statement specifically rules out Wii U and 3DS software on Switch. A Wii U entitlement does not transfer into a Switch license.
“The 3DS cartridge should work in a Switch.”
Switch and 3DS use different software and cartridge formats. Use the cartridge in a compatible 3DS-family system instead.

Closure of new purchases does not remove the redownload policy for previously obtained games and DLC. Check the purchasing account’s redownload history on the Wii U.

“Extra Epic Yarn is just the Wii game in a smaller format.”
It is a 3DS remake with Ravel Abilities, additional transformations and Devilish Mode. Select it when those additions or handheld play are part of what you want.
A decision checklist
- Only a Switch: neither version is playable on that console alone.
- Wii plus a disc: play the original Kirby’s Epic Yarn.
- Wii U with a prior entitlement: redownload the Wii U version if it appears in the account’s history.
- 3DS plus a cartridge: play Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn as the portable remake.
- 3DS with a prior digital purchase: redownload the game under Nintendo’s post-closure policy.
- No legacy hardware: obtaining a compatible Wii or 3DS-family system is necessary; a Switch purchase cannot substitute for either one.
