To play Long Sword well in Monster Hunter Wilds, build your inner Spirit Gauge, convert it into colored spirit levels with Spirit Roundslash or a successful counter, and protect red level once you reach it. Use Foresight Slash reactively during an attack flow, or prepare Special Sheathe early for a predictive Iai Spirit Slash. Keep attacks compact when the monster may move; spend levels on Helm Breaker and Spirit Release Slash when its recovery gives you time.
Understand the two separate spirit resources
Long Sword has an inner Spirit Gauge and a colored spirit level. The inner gauge pays for Spirit Blade attacks; the colored level progresses through white, yellow, and red. Filling the inner gauge does not, by itself, raise your colored level.

Use eligible attacks such as Thrust to build the inner gauge, then spend it on the ordinary Spirit Blade sequence. Connecting Spirit Roundslash at the end raises your colored level. The key is to treat gauge as fuel for attacks and the color as a separate combat state you advance and maintain.
Build levels with the route that fits the opening
Use Spirit Roundslash for the standard route
When you have enough inner gauge and a safe opportunity to complete the sequence, connect the Spirit Blade combo into Spirit Roundslash. This is the straightforward way to raise your level. Avoid committing to the full sequence if the monster is about to leave range or punish you.

Counter with Iai Spirit Slash when you have prepared
Enter Special Sheathe before the monster’s attack, then time Iai Spirit Slash to meet it. A successful Iai Spirit Slash raises a level before red. This is a predictive counter: the sheathed stance must already be ready when the attack is coming. If you have not entered Special Sheathe in time, evade or reposition instead of forcing a late counter.
Use Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust to break wounds
Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust can grant one or more spirit levels when it destroys wounds. It trades the wound for faster progression, so decide whether the level is worth consuming that opening. Wounds are shared in multiplayer; another hunter may destroy one first.
Reach red, then spend it carefully
Red is the level to build toward: it unlocks Crimson attacks and Foresight Whirl Slash. At red, Crimson I into Spirit Blade I gives you a compact pressure loop that can keep damage going without committing to the longer chain.

The best choice depends on the opening and whether you can preserve red, not simply on which attack looks strongest.

Choose a counter based on whether you are already attacking

These options are not interchangeable at the last moment. Foresight Slash fits an attack flow already in progress. Iai Spirit Slash rewards a read made early enough to prepare Special Sheathe.
Spend levels on long attacks only when recovery allows
Helm Breaker followed by its red follow-up, Spirit Release Slash, is a high-commitment route. The pair spends two levels and can leave you at white, removing access to the red move set. Save it for a knockdown or a long recovery that gives you enough time to land the sequence and its follow-up.
If the monster may recover quickly, move out of range, or turn the exchange against you, favor Crimson I into Spirit Blade I or another compact option. The practical decision is whether the opening is long enough, the target will stay in range, and the damage is worth the levels you will spend.
A practical beginner flow
- Land Thrust or another eligible hit to build the inner Spirit Gauge.
- Use the ordinary Spirit Blade sequence and connect Spirit Roundslash to raise a colored level.
- Continue building toward red. Take a successful Iai Spirit Slash when you have prepared Special Sheathe, or use Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust when destroying a wound is worthwhile.
- At red, use Crimson I into Spirit Blade I for compact pressure; extend into a longer Crimson chain only when the target should remain in range.
- Use Foresight Slash when a monster attack arrives during your attack flow. Use Iai Spirit Slash when you have entered Special Sheathe in advance.
- Commit to Helm Breaker and Spirit Release Slash when the monster’s recovery can accommodate both and you accept the two-level spend.
What Focus Mode changes—and what it does not
Capcom USA’s pre-release preview describes Focus Mode as offering more precise control over guarding, aiming, and attacking weak points, with some weapon moves available only in that mode. Joseph Bustos, Capcom USA Social Media and Community Manager, wrote: “In Focus Mode, hunters will have more precise control over how they guard, aim, and attack in order to target a monster’s weak points for big damage.” See the PlayStation.Blog preview. Base-game moves and Ascendance preview details
This guide covers the base-game Long Sword. A Windows Central report published September 15, 2026 summarized a Capcom Ascendance expansion showcase previewing Boost Driver, Boost Gauge-enabled combos, a Sacred Sheath stance, and additional Foresight Slash damage while Boost Gauge is active. These are previewed expansion mechanics, not moves to assume are in the base game; check the report’s Ascendance Long Sword coverage for that announcement.
The independent Red Gauge Long Sword guide says it reflects Title Update 4, including a change that lengthened the window before Special Sheathe deactivates automatically. Detailed durations, gauge costs, damage values, and balance behavior can change with updates, so rely on the current in-game controls and patch information for exact timings.
