A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Short answer: Nintendo’s main Mario games are generally not native Windows or macOS releases. Current titles such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Kart World, and Super Mario Odyssey require compatible Nintendo hardware. You can still use a PC alongside a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 for recording and streaming, or choose a legitimate Mario-inspired PC game. Emulation exists, but downloading unauthorized Nintendo ROMs or bypassing console security can create legal and security problems.
Can you officially play Mario on a PC?
Not in the way you would install a game from Steam or the Epic Games Store. Nintendo’s official Mario catalog is centered on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, rather than Windows or macOS. Its store lists products such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Mario Kart World as Nintendo-console games.

Nintendo also says it does not currently offer or authorize products that let users play or download its game files on personal computers. A Nintendo Account, digital purchase, or Nintendo Switch Online subscription does not automatically give you a Windows or Mac version.
“Mario” is a franchise, not one platform category. Licensed third-party products, mobile games, browser projects, and Mario-inspired PC games may exist, but they should not be confused with native PC releases of Nintendo’s mainline games.

The official way to play modern Mario games
If you want Nintendo’s current Mario releases, the dependable route is to use the Nintendo system named on the game’s product page.
| Game or series | Official route | Native PC version |
|---|---|---|
| Super Mario Bros. Wonder | Nintendo Switch; Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility and edition options vary | No generally offered native PC version |
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Nintendo Switch | No generally offered native PC version |
| Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury | Nintendo Switch | No generally offered native PC version |
| Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 | Nintendo’s supported console ecosystem | No generally offered native PC version |
| Mario Kart World | Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo describes it as exclusive to Switch 2 | No native PC release listed |
| Super Mario Odyssey | Nintendo Switch | No generally offered native PC version |
For a purchase, check whether the game requires Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, or a specific edition. Digital Nintendo purchases download to the primary Nintendo console associated with the Nintendo Account; they are not automatically cross-platform PC licenses. Physical and digital availability, upgrade requirements, online features, and regional pricing should be verified on Nintendo’s store.
Nintendo’s Mario games store and the official Mario website are the safest places to confirm a game’s supported hardware.
Using Nintendo Switch with a PC
A PC can work alongside a Nintendo console for recording, streaming, editing, or displaying gameplay. This is not the same as running Mario natively on the PC: the Nintendo console still executes the game.
Capture-card setup
- Connect the console’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture card’s HDMI output to a TV or monitor for pass-through.
- Connect the capture card to the PC with a suitable USB cable.
- Install the manufacturer’s software, or open OBS Studio.
- In OBS, add the capture card as a video-capture source.
- Select the capture device’s audio input if sound does not appear automatically.
- Play from the directly connected TV or monitor when possible, while the PC records or streams the feed.
AverMedia and Elgato are examples of capture-device manufacturers, but the important specifications are HDMI input and pass-through, supported resolution and refresh rate, USB bandwidth, audio capture, OBS compatibility, and latency.
Capture-card troubleshooting
- No signal: Check that HDMI runs from the console to the capture card’s input, not its output, and confirm that the device has power.
- Black screen: Check resolution compatibility and any content-protection behavior. Try the console’s standard output settings.
- No audio: Choose the capture card as the audio source in OBS or the manufacturer’s application.
- Delayed controls: Use HDMI pass-through for play instead of the software preview window.
- Stuttering: Check the USB port and cable, reduce the recording resolution if necessary, and check PC resource usage.
A capture card does not remove the need to own the compatible console and game, and it does not turn a laptop into an authorized Nintendo console.
What about Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo Switch Online can provide online features and access to supported classic-game libraries on Nintendo hardware. It is not a Windows or macOS service that streams the entire Mario catalog to a PC.
The available games, subscription tiers, countries, and requirements can change. Check the relevant game and Nintendo Switch Online page before subscribing. For example, Nintendo’s official Super Mario Bros. Wonder site describes online features in the Nintendo Switch ecosystem, not a standalone PC version.
Emulators, ROMs, and the legal boundary
An emulator imitates a console’s behavior so software designed for that console can run on another device. Nintendo’s piracy FAQ recognizes that emulators can run games on another console, PC, or handheld. That technical possibility does not decide whether a particular setup is authorized.
The important distinction is between:
- Emulator software: the program that imitates console hardware.
- Game files: the copyrighted software needed to run a particular title.
- Firmware, keys, or security-related data: additional materials that may involve separate legal and technical issues.
Emulation is not automatically synonymous with piracy in every jurisdiction. Its legality can depend on how the emulator was made, whether it bypasses protections, how the files were obtained, and local law. Conversely, owning an original cartridge or disc does not automatically make downloading a matching ROM from an unofficial website lawful everywhere.

It also warns about unauthorized emulators and circumvention products. This is Nintendo’s stated position and is not a substitute for legal advice in your country.
For that reason, this guide does not link to ROM sites, BIOS downloads, console keys, firmware dumps, preconfigured piracy packages, or instructions for bypassing Nintendo security. Technical feasibility is not the same as authorization.

Can you play Mario in a browser?
Be skeptical of sites promising free browser versions of Nintendo games. A page using “Mario” in its title or thumbnail is not necessarily an official Nintendo product. Unofficial pages may host unauthorized copies, fake download buttons, malicious extensions, notification abuse, phishing forms, or executable “players.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a Steam Deck or Linux PC play Mario?
A Steam Deck is a PC-based handheld, not a Nintendo console. Installing an emulator on it does not change the copyright status of the game files or authorize an otherwise unauthorized copy.
Compatibility, controls, performance, and emulator support vary by console generation and game. Older systems may be less demanding technically, while modern Nintendo hardware can be difficult to emulate and may involve additional legal concerns. Avoid assuming that a particular Switch or Switch 2 game runs reliably or lawfully on a Steam Deck without current, jurisdiction-specific research.
Legal alternatives for a Mario-like PC experience
If your goal is the style of play rather than Nintendo’s characters, look for legitimate PC games in these categories:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| You want… | Look for… |
|---|---|
| Classic 2D platforming | Side-scrolling worlds, precision jumping, power-ups, hidden routes, and controller support |
| 3D exploration | Collectible-driven worlds, open-ended platforming, and camera controls designed for a gamepad |
| Level creation | A legitimate PC level editor or user-generated platform-game community |
| Kart racing | Drifting, accessible handling, local multiplayer, and family-friendly presentation |
| Party play | Local multiplayer collections that clearly list controller and player-count support |
| Retro presentation | Officially licensed compilations or modern retro-style platformers |
These are alternatives, not Mario games. Before buying, check the official storefront for Windows, macOS, or Linux support; controller compatibility; local multiplayer; age rating; refund policy; regional availability; and the developer or publisher. Do not treat a fan-made installer of unclear origin as safe simply because it uses Mario branding.
Which option is right for you?
| Your goal | Best route |
|---|---|
| Play the newest official Mario games | Buy the compatible Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 hardware and the game. |
| Play classic Mario officially | Use a supported Nintendo console and check the current classic-game catalog and subscription tier. |
| Record or stream Mario on a PC | Use the Nintendo console with a capture card and streaming or recording software. |
| Avoid buying Nintendo hardware | Choose a legitimate PC platformer, kart racer, or local-multiplayer alternative. |
| Experiment with emulation | Research local law and use only lawfully obtained software; do not download unauthorized ROMs or security files. |
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Mario PC game?
Nintendo’s mainline Mario console games are not generally offered as native Windows or macOS releases. Licensed or third-party Mario-related products may differ, so verify each title and region separately.
Can I play Super Mario Odyssey or Super Mario Bros. Wonder on PC?
Neither is generally sold as a native PC game by Nintendo. The official route is compatible Nintendo hardware. A PC can record the console output through a capture card.
Can I use a Switch with a laptop?
Yes, for recording or viewing through compatible capture hardware. The console still runs the game, and a capture preview may have enough latency that a directly connected TV or monitor is preferable for play.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Nintendo Switch Online available on PC?
It is a Nintendo-console service, not a general Windows or macOS game-streaming service. Its classic libraries and online features require supported Nintendo hardware.
Are free browser Mario games safe?
Not by default. Unless the page is clearly official or authorized, treat it as potentially unauthorized and avoid downloads, extensions, notification permissions, and requests for account credentials.
Can a Nintendo purchase be downloaded on PC?
Not automatically. Nintendo’s digital-purchase system downloads games to the associated supported console; a purchase should not be assumed to include a cross-platform PC license.
