How to Play PlayStation Games on PC Without a PS5 Emulator (2026 Guide)

By VGSources Team 10 min read

You can play PlayStation games on a PC without a PS5 emulator in three legitimate ways: buy a game’s native PC edition, stream a game from your own PS5 or PS4 with PS Remote Play, or stream an eligible title through the PlayStation Plus PC app. These routes are not interchangeable. A particular game must either have a separate PC release, be installed on a console you own for Remote Play, or appear in the PlayStation Plus streaming catalog available in your region.

The quickest choice is determined by four questions: does the game have a PC listing, do you own a PS4 or PS5, are you willing to buy a separate PC copy or maintain a subscription, and can your network meet streaming requirements?

Choose the route that matches your game

Method Where the game runs What you need Main limitation
Native PC edition On the PC A separate PC purchase from a supported storefront; a compatible Windows gaming setup; a controller if desired Only titles with an official PC edition are available, and the console and PC products are sold separately
PS Remote Play On your PS5 or PS4 An updated console, the same PlayStation account on the console and PC, the PS Remote Play app, a compatible controller, a USB cable for the controller, and high-speed internet You must own and leave access to the console; network quality affects latency and image quality
PlayStation Plus on PC On Sony’s streaming service An adult PlayStation account, a PlayStation Plus membership, a compatible controller, broadband of at least 5 Mbps, and a supported app and region Only eligible catalog games can be streamed; add-ons and DLC cannot be used, and Party Chat is not supported in the PC app

None of these methods makes the entire PlayStation catalog available on a computer. Check the individual game, storefront, console, or regional catalog before buying hardware or a subscription.

Route 1: buy the game’s native PC edition

A native PC edition is the closest experience to an ordinary computer game: the game is downloaded to the PC and runs there instead of being streamed from a console or service. PlayStation’s official PC games catalog links its listed titles to Steam and the Epic Games Store. Use that catalog as a starting point, then open the current storefront page for the exact game and edition you want.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Verify that the exact title has a PC release

  1. Search PlayStation’s official PC games catalog for the game’s name.
  2. Open the linked Steam or Epic Games Store listing rather than relying on a search result for a similarly named console edition.
  3. Check the edition, regional availability, system requirements, release status, and any account requirement shown on the storefront page.
  4. Confirm that the listing is a PC product before purchasing. A PS4 or PS5 listing does not unlock a PC copy.

The catalog is title-specific. Current listings include Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and The Last of Us Part II Remastered, alongside other PlayStation Studios releases. Their presence demonstrates that those editions are offered on PC; it does not establish that every PlayStation console game has a PC version or that future console releases will come to PC.

Understand ownership and save-data rules

Sony’s PC Games FAQ states: “Yes, the PC and console versions of PlayStation Studios games are different products.” Buying the PS4 or PS5 edition therefore does not provide the PC edition, and buying the PC edition does not provide a console copy. Budget for the product on the platform where you intend to play.

Sony also says save data currently cannot transfer between the PC and console editions of a PlayStation Studios title. Treat the two versions as separate save environments unless the individual game’s documentation explicitly says otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check account and controller requirements

PlayStation Studios PC games generally do not require a PlayStation Network account, although selected titles do. Read the individual product details instead of assuming one rule applies to every release. If you buy a PC game directly from PlayStation and receive a voucher code, Sony says a Steam account is needed to redeem it.

A DualSense controller can be used with PlayStation Studios PC games through a wired connection. Wireless support and DualSense-specific features vary by title, so a controller may work while haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, or other advanced functions do not. Do not purchase a game expecting every console feature to be reproduced on PC.

When this route is the best fit

  • You want the lowest possible streaming dependence and the game has a current PC edition.
  • You do not own a PS4 or PS5.
  • You want to play offline after installation, subject to the game’s own launcher or account rules.
  • You are comfortable purchasing a separate product even if you already own the console version.

Route 2: use PS Remote Play from your PS5 or PS4

PS Remote Play does not emulate a PlayStation in Windows or macOS. The game remains installed and running on your PS5 or PS4; the Remote Play app sends the console’s video to the computer and returns your controller input to the console. Sony describes it as controlling a PS5 or PS4 from a PC or Mac connected to a high-speed network.

Requirements

  • A PS5 or PS4 with current system software.
  • The same PlayStation account signed in on the console and in the Remote Play app.
  • The PS Remote Play app for a supported Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 PC, or a Mac system listed by Sony.
  • A compatible controller. Sony identifies DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers.
  • A USB cable for connecting the controller during setup or play, as required by the supported configuration.
  • A high-speed internet connection. Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the baseline and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for the best performance.

Set up Remote Play

  1. Update the PS5 or PS4 system software so the console meets the current Remote Play requirement.
  2. Install the official PS Remote Play app on the Windows PC or Mac.
  3. Sign in to the app with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
  4. Connect a supported controller to the computer with a USB cable and complete the app’s pairing prompts.
  5. Select the PS5 or PS4 shown by the app and wait for the console stream to appear.
  6. Open the game on the console and play through the streamed session.

The app includes video-quality settings such as resolution and frame rate. Start with the default or a conservative setting, then increase quality only if your connection remains stable. Sony’s bandwidth figures are thresholds and recommendations, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate, or input latency on every home network.

What affects the experience

Remote Play uses your network in both directions: the console sends video to the PC while your inputs travel back. Wi-Fi interference, other household traffic, distance from the router, and upload performance can cause delay, blocky video, or disconnects even when a speed test briefly reaches the stated number. A wired connection for the PC, console, or both can reduce local interference, but it cannot eliminate every internet or routing problem.

Because the game runs on your console, Remote Play can cover titles that have no native PC edition, provided the game is installed or playable on that PS4 or PS5. It does not let you play a title you do not own, and it does not remove the need to keep the console available.

Common Remote Play problems

  • The console is not found: verify that both devices use the same PlayStation account, the console is updated, and the app has permission to connect on the current network.
  • Video stutters or becomes blurry: test the connection in both directions, stop large downloads or streams, move the PC or console closer to the router, or lower the app’s resolution and frame-rate settings.
  • Controls do not respond: reconnect the supported controller by USB, confirm that the operating system recognizes it, and restart the Remote Play session.
  • Input feels delayed: reduce network congestion and use a wired connection where possible. More bandwidth alone may not fix high latency caused by an unstable route.

Route 3: stream eligible games with PlayStation Plus on PC

The PlayStation Plus PC app is a subscription streaming route, separate from Remote Play. The game is selected from Sony’s eligible PlayStation Plus catalog and runs on the service rather than on your own PS4 or PS5. Your console library is not automatically converted into a cloud library.

Requirements and regional checks

  • An adult PlayStation account.
  • An active PlayStation Plus membership that includes the streaming catalog in your region.
  • Broadband of at least 5 Mbps. Sony recommends wired internet for the best connection.
  • A compatible controller. Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4 and notes that some third-party XInput PC controllers may work, but full compatibility is not guaranteed.
  • The PlayStation Plus PC app on a supported Windows system.

Sony’s US support page lists Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and modest app requirements, but software support can change. Check the current support page before installing, especially if you use Windows 11 or another operating system. The page is US-specific: app availability, membership eligibility, catalog content, and requirements can differ in other countries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start a streaming session

  1. Confirm that PlayStation Plus PC streaming is offered in your country and that your membership tier includes the feature.
  2. Install the current PlayStation Plus PC app from Sony’s official support instructions.
  3. Sign in with an adult PlayStation account.
  4. Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 or another controller identified as compatible by the app.
  5. Browse the local streaming catalog and open the individual game’s page.
  6. Start the stream only after checking that the game is included in your plan and region.

Catalog and feature limits

Catalog availability changes over time and is region-specific. A game appearing in one country’s catalog is not evidence that it can be streamed everywhere. Verify the individual title immediately before subscribing or beginning a session.

Sony says add-ons and downloadable content cannot be used while streaming through the PC app. Party Chat is also not supported in that app. These restrictions matter for expansions, online groups, and games whose extra content is not included in the base catalog entry.

When this route is useful

  • You do not own a PS4 or PS5 but the game is currently in your local PlayStation Plus streaming catalog.
  • You prefer a subscription library to buying each PC edition separately.
  • Your connection is stable enough for cloud streaming and you accept that catalog access can change.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Look for a native PC listing. If the official PC catalog links the exact game to a current Steam or Epic listing, compare that separate purchase with your budget and hardware.
  2. If no PC listing exists, ask whether you own the console version and a PS4 or PS5. If yes, Remote Play is the direct way to use that console from the PC.
  3. If you do not own a console, check PlayStation Plus streaming in your country. Search the local catalog for the exact game and confirm that your membership tier includes it.
  4. Measure your network before committing to streaming. Remote Play needs at least 5 Mbps up and down, with 15 Mbps in both directions recommended by Sony; PlayStation Plus PC streaming lists 5 Mbps broadband as its minimum.
  5. Choose the controller path. Native PC games support wired DualSense use, Remote Play supports DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4, and the PlayStation Plus PC app lists DUALSHOCK 4 while warning that third-party XInput support is not guaranteed.

What each method does not provide

  • A console purchase does not unlock a PC copy. Native PC and PS4/PS5 editions are separate products.
  • Remote Play does not create a standalone PC installation. The console must run the game and remain available.
  • PlayStation Plus streaming is not the whole PlayStation catalog. Only eligible games in the local catalog can be streamed.
  • Streaming does not guarantee console-level performance. Resolution, smoothness, and latency depend on the network and app settings.
  • Current listings do not promise future releases. The official PC catalog shows available titles, not a blanket commitment that every future console game will launch on PC.

Controller and cable checklist

A compatible controller is required for both streaming routes and useful for many native PC games. Sony supports wired DualSense use with PlayStation Studios PC games, identifies DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 for Remote Play, and lists DUALSHOCK 4 for PlayStation Plus PC streaming. A USB cable is part of Sony’s Remote Play setup requirements; no particular cable model is required by the guidance.

  • For a native PC edition, confirm the game’s controller and feature support before assuming wireless operation or advanced DualSense effects.
  • For Remote Play, connect the controller to the PC with USB if pairing or input fails.
  • For PlayStation Plus streaming, prefer the controller types listed by Sony because third-party XInput compatibility is not guaranteed to be complete.

Safety, ownership, and account expectations

These supported methods avoid the compatibility and legal uncertainty associated with unofficial emulators. Use the official storefront listing, Remote Play app, or PlayStation Plus app for the route you select. Keep account credentials private and sign in only through the official software or pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before paying, identify what you are buying: a downloadable PC product, access to your own console through Remote Play, or time-limited access to an eligible subscription catalog. The three choices have different ownership, hardware, and availability implications, so none should be presented as a universal replacement for the others.

Bottom line

For the most direct PC experience, buy the game’s separate native PC edition when one is listed. If you already own the game on PS4 or PS5, PS Remote Play lets your computer control that console without an emulator. If you lack a console, PlayStation Plus PC streaming can work when the exact game, membership, app, and regional catalog all support it. Check the title first, then verify the method’s controller, account, operating-system, and network requirements before spending money.
