PS5 Emulation vs. PS5 Remote Play: Which Is Better for Playing on a PC?

For most people who own a PS5, PS Remote Play is the better way to play its games on a PC screen. It is Sony’s documented PC solution: the game continues running on your PS5 while the computer receives a video stream and sends your controller input back to the console. PS5 emulation is a different proposition. Projects such as KytyPS5 are experimental, title-dependent and explicitly report limited compatibility, crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance. Emulation is therefore mainly for technically curious users testing a specific game or contributing to development—not a dependable replacement for a PS5.

The short answer: choose Remote Play unless experimentation is the point

The two options solve different problems. Remote Play lets a PS5 owner move the console’s display and controls to a PC. Emulation attempts to make the PC run PlayStation 5 software itself.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Choose PS Remote Play if you own a PS5, want the broadest practical access to your console library, and can provide a stable connection between the console and computer.
  • Consider PS5 emulation only if you are comfortable with unfinished software, troubleshooting and game-by-game compatibility checks.
  • If you do not own a PS5, Remote Play cannot meet your goal because Sony requires a PS5 console for its streaming workflow. Current experimental emulation should not be treated as a reliable general substitute.

There is no universal “better” choice independent of the goal. Remote Play prioritizes reliability through hardware you already own; emulation prioritizes running software locally, but currently gives up compatibility and stability to do so.

What PS5 Remote Play actually does

Remote Play does not turn a PC into a standalone PS5. The console runs the game, renders each frame and remains the source of the save data and game installation. The PC app receives the stream and transmits your input over the network. You see and control the PS5 through the computer while the console does the work.

  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Sony’s documented workflow requires a PS5 and a PlayStation account. The console must be connected to broadband, and the computer runs the PS Remote Play app. Remote Play supports compatible PS5 games, but games that require PlayStation VR or other additional peripherals are excluded from the compatible-device experience described by Sony.

Because the image travels over a network, quality depends on both the console-to-PC connection and the wider network conditions. A fast connection helps, but Sony’s figures are recommendations rather than a guarantee of a particular resolution, latency or frame rate.

What PS5 emulation does—and what it does not prove

An emulator attempts to reproduce the console environment in software so that the PC can execute PS5 game code. KytyPS5 is an open-source project for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. Its project description says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Boots” is an important qualification. A title opening to a menu, showing a scene or rendering a few frames does not mean it is playable from start to finish. The project warns that it is early in development and that users should expect limited compatibility, crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance. Results can change as builds and game support change.

The project does not distribute games or copyrighted system software. Anyone exploring emulation needs legally obtained game files and must follow the laws that apply in their jurisdiction. The cited project description does not establish PS5 ownership as a universal emulator requirement, while Sony’s Remote Play guidance explicitly requires a PS5.

What you need for PS Remote Play on a Windows PC

Sony’s listed Windows requirements are modest, but meeting them does not remove the need for a suitable network or a PS5. The requirements are:

  • Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11.
  • A seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later.
  • At least 2 GB of RAM.
  • At least 100 MB of available storage for the application.
  • A display with a minimum resolution of 1024 × 768.
  • A sound card.
  • A USB port.

Sony lists the DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 as compatible controllers for Windows Remote Play. Its Windows instructions specify connecting the controller to the PC with a USB cable. A compatible controller is optional only if you already have another input method that the application and game accept; the documented controller path is a supported controller connected by USB.

How to set up PS Remote Play step by step

  1. Check the PC. Confirm that the computer runs 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and meets Sony’s processor, memory, storage, display, sound-card and USB requirements.
  2. Prepare the PS5. On the console, open the system settings and enable Remote Play. The exact menu wording can change with system software, so use the Remote Play setting in the PS5 settings rather than assuming the console is enabled by default.
  3. Enable rest-mode access if you want wake-up. Sony explains that Remote Play can wake the PS5 from rest mode when the relevant rest-mode and network settings are enabled. Without those settings, the console may need to be awake before you connect.
  4. Install the official PS Remote Play app for PC. Use Sony’s current Windows application rather than an unofficial streaming client.
  5. Sign in with the same PlayStation account. The account on the app must correspond to the account used on the PS5 for the documented connection process.
  6. Connect the controller. Plug a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 into the PC with a USB cable, as Sony’s Windows instructions specify.
  7. Start the connection. Open the app and select the PS5 when it is found. The console then supplies the game image to the PC.
  8. Launch a compatible game. Games that require VR or additional peripherals may not be playable through the compatible-device workflow, even when other PS5 games are available.

If the console is not found, verify that Remote Play is enabled, the app and PS5 use the same account, the console has broadband access and the PS5 is awake or configured for rest-mode wake-up. These checks address setup failures without changing the underlying game compatibility.

How fast does your internet need to be?

Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as a baseline for Remote Play. For best performance, Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download. These are stated recommendations, not guaranteed performance levels: congestion, wireless interference, routing and other network conditions can still affect image quality, controls and connectivity.

Both directions matter. The PS5 sends the video stream toward the PC, while controller input and connection traffic travel back toward the console. A speed test that looks good in only one direction does not demonstrate that the complete Remote Play path is suitable.

  • At the 5 Mbps baseline: treat the connection as meeting Sony’s minimum recommendation, not as a promise of smooth play in every situation.
  • At 15 Mbps or above in both directions: you meet Sony’s recommendation for best performance, although real-world results still vary.
  • Below 5 Mbps in either direction: you are below Sony’s stated baseline and should expect a greater chance of quality or connection problems.

The figures describe connection speed, not a guaranteed latency value. No controlled latency comparison or independent performance benchmark establishes a fixed delay for either Remote Play or emulation in the available evidence.

Remote Play problems and practical checks

The PS5 does not appear in the app

  • Confirm Remote Play is enabled on the console.
  • Check that the app and console are signed in to the same PlayStation account.
  • Make sure the PS5 is connected to broadband and powered on, or that rest-mode wake-up settings are enabled.
  • Restart the app and console after correcting the settings.

The picture is unstable or controls feel inconsistent

  • Check upload and download performance in both directions against Sony’s 5 Mbps baseline and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation.
  • Look for changing network conditions rather than assuming the PC is underpowered; Remote Play is a stream and is sensitive to the connection.
  • Use the USB controller connection specified by Sony’s Windows instructions and verify that the cable and USB port remain connected.

A particular game will not work

First determine whether the game requires PlayStation VR or another additional peripheral. Sony’s compatible-device guidance excludes some such titles. If the game is otherwise compatible, the failure is more likely to be a connection, account or application issue than evidence that the PC can run the game independently.

What PS5 emulation requires from the user

Emulation removes the need to stream from a console, but it adds uncertainty. You need a supported PC operating system and an emulator build, legally obtained game files and enough patience to investigate title-specific behavior. KytyPS5’s stated platform support is Windows and Linux, with macOS described as experimental.

Unlike Remote Play, there is no single Sony-defined PC specification that guarantees a result. The cited project reports limited compatibility and does not provide an independently audited percentage of working games. Local PC hardware, the emulator build and the exact title all influence the outcome. A powerful computer may still fail to run a game if the emulator does not yet implement the required console behavior.

How to evaluate an emulated title responsibly

  1. Identify the exact game. Do not infer support for one title from a report that another title boots.
  2. Check the project’s current compatibility information. Emulator support changes, so old reports can be obsolete.
  3. Distinguish booting from playability. Look for evidence of sustained gameplay rather than only a launcher, menu or short rendered scene.
  4. Expect instability. Plan for crashes, visual defects and poor performance because the project itself lists these as current limitations.
  5. Use legally obtained files. The project says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software.
  6. Keep expectations title-specific. A working demonstration is not a compatibility guarantee for the rest of the PS5 library.

Is emulation better if you do not own a PS5?

Remote Play is not an answer for someone without a PS5. Sony’s documented process requires the console because the console is where the game runs. Emulation appears to address the ownership problem by attempting to run software locally, but the current project status does not make it a dependable way to access a broad PS5 library.

That leaves a clear distinction between possible in principle and practical today. An emulator may boot a particular title, yet still crash, render incorrectly or perform too poorly for a complete playthrough. If your goal is simply to play PS5 games on a PC rather than to test emulator technology, the lack of a PS5 removes Remote Play’s prerequisite and the limitations of current emulation remove its reliability.

Which option fits each type of player?

You own a PS5 and want to use a PC monitor or laptop

Use Remote Play. It is the supported workflow, requires no attempt to recreate PS5 hardware in software and gives you access to compatible games installed on your console. Your main variables are account setup, controller connection and network quality.

You own a PS5 but want to avoid network dependence

Remote Play cannot remove the streaming requirement because the game still runs on the console. Emulation could, in theory, run locally, but current compatibility and stability warnings make it an experimental project rather than a dependable offline alternative.

You are studying emulator development or testing one specific game

Emulation can be worthwhile as a technical experiment. Follow the project’s current compatibility information for the exact title and build, and interpret every result conservatively. A successful boot is only an initial milestone.

You want broad, predictable access to PS5 games on PC

Remote Play is the closer fit if you own the console and have the required connection. Neither option should be presented as a universal solution for every PS5 title: Remote Play excludes some peripheral-dependent games, while emulation remains limited and unstable.

Important differences that are easy to misunderstand

Remote Play is not emulation

The PC in a Remote Play setup is a client for the console’s video stream. Installing the app does not install the PS5 game on the computer, and closing or disconnecting the console ends the source of the game session.

Emulation is not a second Remote Play client

An emulator does not depend on the PS5 continuously rendering and streaming the game. Its challenge is reproducing enough of the console’s behavior locally, which is why compatibility can vary dramatically by title and why a game may boot without being playable.

“Compatible” has different meanings

For Remote Play, compatibility refers to whether Sony allows the game and its required accessories to be used through the supported remote-device workflow. For emulation, compatibility is a project-level status that can range from booting to partial rendering to stable play. Those labels should not be treated as equivalent.

Decision checklist

  • Do you own a PS5? If yes, Remote Play is available; if no, Sony’s documented workflow is unavailable.
  • Can your connection provide at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps recommended for best performance? If not, Remote Play may be unreliable.
  • Do you have a supported controller and a USB connection for Windows? Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4.
  • Does the game require VR or another peripheral excluded from Remote Play? If yes, Remote Play may not support it.
  • Are you willing to check emulator compatibility for one exact title, tolerate crashes and accept that performance may be poor? If not, emulation is the wrong fit.
  • Is your objective to play games or to experiment with emulator technology? Playing favors Remote Play; experimentation may justify trying an emulator.

Bottom line

For a PS5 owner who wants to play on a PC display, PS Remote Play is the practical winner: it is Sony’s documented method, has clear Windows and controller requirements, and uses the console’s existing game environment. Plan around the 5 Mbps baseline and Sony’s 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation, while remembering that network conditions still matter.

PS5 emulation is better understood as an evolving technical project. KytyPS5’s ability to boot some 2D and 3D games is meaningful progress, but its own warnings about limited compatibility, crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance rule it out as a dependable general-purpose replacement. Choose it when investigating emulation is part of the goal—not when you need the straightforward way to play a PS5 library on a PC.
