Phantom Blade Zero is a fast, stylized action RPG built around wuxia and kung fu film movement. Preview footage and hands-on reports describe three defensive responses—holding a block, timing a parry, and dodging—with the possibility of counterattacking after a successful reaction. S-Game says it is designing visual cues so elaborate martial-arts animations remain readable rather than turning combat into a passive cinematic.
That is the reliable high-level picture. Published material does not establish universal parry-frame windows, a complete attack-color chart, exact final button mappings, or whether every enemy move is parryable. The details below separate confirmed design information from observations of preview builds.

What Phantom Blade Zero combat is trying to feel like
S-Game presents Phantom Blade Zero as an action-first wuxia adventure influenced by Hong Kong kung fu cinema. Founder and CEO Soulframe Liang said the team wanted elaborate attack chains that could be performed with relatively simple inputs. The goal is expressive movement: the player should feel responsible for a fighter’s decisions while seeing choreography that would be difficult to reproduce with ordinary human motion.

The game is not advertised as an interactive movie in which the player merely watches preset performances. Attacks, defensive reactions, weapon choices and counters are intended to remain playable systems. At the same time, the animation is deliberately stylized, fast and sometimes acrobatic, so reading an opponent is a core skill.

In an Epic Games Store interview, designer Wu explained that the team worked to preserve martial-arts motion while adding cues that players can react to. Liang described the problem as signaling an enemy’s intent through fluid kung fu movement. In practical terms, you are expected to watch an enemy’s body and weapon, recognize the beginning of an attack and choose a response rather than hold one universal defense.
Liang also wrote in a May 24, 2023 PlayStation Blog overview: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” That statement concerns how the combat motions are created. A later official deep dive identifies Donnie Yen as creative consultant and as the facial and motion-capture performer for Mó Yuan. Those are separate roles: the game can use performance capture for a character while still relying on handcrafted animation for the game’s combat moves.
How blocking, parrying and dodging differ
The clearest player-facing description comes from an early PlayStation hands-on preview. It says the player can hold L1 to block, or parry and dodge attacks for counterattacks. Later hands-on previews also describe dodging and parrying during encounters. Because these reports concern preview builds, treat L1 and any other mapping as provisional rather than a final control manual.

|---|---|---|
| Block | An early hands-on account says holding L1 blocks. | A held, defensive response that gives you time to read an attack. The available material does not specify stamina costs, chip damage, guard breaks or the complete list of attacks it stops. |
| Parry | Preview coverage describes parrying as an available response and mentions counterattacks after successful defense. | A timed reaction intended to turn an incoming strike into an offensive opening. No universal timing window or punish animation has been published. |
| Dodge | Hands-on reports describe dodging alongside blocking and parrying. | An evasive option for leaving an attack’s path. The sources do not define invulnerability frames, travel distance or whether every dodge can lead directly to a counter. |
Do not read the table as a complete frame-data guide. It describes the systems that previews have shown, not every rule in the launch version. In particular, the available sources do not prove that every enemy attack can be parried, that a successful parry always produces the same counter, or that attacks use a universal color-coded warning system.
How to approach a parry in practice
Until S-Game publishes final controls and timing information, the safest way to learn parrying is as an observation-and-response loop.

- Watch the whole attack, not just the weapon. S-Game’s readability comments indicate that intent is communicated through animated movement. Look for the enemy’s commitment, body rotation and weapon path rather than waiting for a single unconfirmed color cue.
- Choose your defensive answer. If you need time to understand a move, the previewed held block is the conservative option. If you can identify the strike’s arrival, attempt a parry. If the attack covers an awkward angle or you are unsure of the timing, move clear with a dodge.
- Use the opening created by a successful reaction. Preview accounts describe counterattacks after defensive success. They do not establish one universal follow-up, so treat the counter as an opportunity to continue your weapon’s attack pattern rather than assume a guaranteed scripted sequence.
- Reassess the next attack immediately. Wuxia choreography can chain several motions together. A counter opportunity does not mean the encounter has become safe; keep watching for the next commitment and be ready to block, parry or evade again.
This method avoids a common mistake: treating parry as the only correct answer. A timed reaction may be rewarding, but the combat pitch includes multiple defenses and a broad arsenal. Blocking and dodging are not evidence that you have failed to play properly; they are part of the intended decision set.
What is not yet known about parry timing
Readers looking for exact numbers should be cautious. The available official and preview material does not provide:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- an exact parry window measured in frames or milliseconds;
- a confirmed button assignment for the final release beyond the early preview’s L1 block description;
- a complete list of attack types and whether each one is parryable;
- a universal warning-color legend;
- confirmed guard, stamina, stagger or damage outcomes for a missed parry; or
- a definitive rule for which counterattack follows each successful defense.
That absence is important when reading community explanations of named attack classes or highly specific timing rules. Such guides may describe a later build or a player’s interpretation, but the official and preview material available here does not make those rules universal. Controls and tuning can change before launch.
Weapons, Phantom Edges and build choices
Combat is broader than a parry loop. An official 2026 deep dive says Phantom Blade Zero will include more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. You can upgrade weapons, pair them with accessories and shape a build around different tools. The same post says upgraded weapons can be reforged so materials can be reinvested elsewhere, reducing the risk of permanently wasting upgrade resources.
| System | Published detail | What it means for combat planning |
|---|---|---|
| Main weapons | More than 30 | A large primary arsenal for choosing a preferred attack language; no official damage, speed or ranking comparison has been published. |
| Phantom Edges | 25 secondary weapons | Secondary tools that can be combined with a main weapon; the sources do not define one optimal pairing. |
| Upgrades | Weapons can be upgraded and later reforged so materials can be reinvested. | Experimentation is supported without treating an early investment as irreversible. |
| Accessories | Accessories can be paired with weapons. | Build customization extends beyond the weapon model itself. |
| Other tools | The official deep dive mentions ranged options and summons, and says some enemies expand the player’s arsenal. | Not every encounter is framed as close-range blade work or a test of parry timing. |
The inventory numbers are counts announced by S-Game and PlayStation, not a performance benchmark. There is no published evidence here to rank weapons by damage, speed, parry advantage or overall superiority. A sensible comparison is therefore about play style: which main weapon and Phantom Edge combination fits the way you prefer to attack, defend and create openings.

Difficulty options and what they suggest
The official 2026 announcement names three difficulty choices:

| Mode | Official description |
|---|---|
| Wayfarer | For players who mainly want the story. |
| Hellwalker | For more advanced play, with more adaptive enemy intelligence. |
| Sixty-Six Days | A severe challenge. |
These labels establish the intended range, but the announcement does not quantify enemy health, damage, parry forgiveness, checkpoint behavior or the exact artificial-intelligence changes. Do not assume that the hardest mode simply shortens a reaction window, or that Wayfarer removes every combat demand. The named descriptions are the limit of what can be stated confidently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?
The sources support calling Phantom Blade Zero a fast action RPG with wuxia and kung fu influences. They do not establish a definitive Soulslike classification. The presence of blocking, parrying, dodging, difficult enemies and a severe difficulty mode may remind some players of that broader genre, but those features also appear in many other action games.
A more useful comparison is to ask what kind of defense you want. Players who enjoy reading an attack and answering with a timed parry may find familiar appeal. Players who prefer to hold a defense while learning a move or reposition with a dodge are also covered by the described combat model. The weapon and Phantom Edge system further separates the game from a single-defense formula.
What preview footage can—and cannot—tell you
Hands-on reports are useful evidence for the feel of a preview build: they show that blocking, parrying and dodging were playable responses and that counters were part of the encounter rhythm. They are not final-game testing. They cannot establish the shipping control layout, balance, enemy roster, exact timings or the final behavior of every weapon.

The official material is stronger for announced systems: the weapon counts, Phantom Edge terminology, upgrade and reforging approach, accessory customization, ranged tools, summons and the three named difficulty modes. S-Game’s interviews are also the best basis for explaining the design intent behind readable visual cues and handcrafted combat animation.
What to check before buying
PlayStation identifies a PS5 release and has said that preorders were live, but release timing, preorder status, editions, physical formats, pricing and retailer availability are all volatile. Verify those details on the current official store page before purchasing. Preview descriptions should likewise be treated as observations of earlier builds until the developer publishes final controls and a complete combat guide.
If your main question is “How does parrying work?”, the honest answer is: it is presented as a timed defensive response that can create a counterattack, alongside a held block and an evasive dodge. The game clearly wants you to read animated enemy intent, but the exact timing rules remain unpublished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you block attacks in Phantom Blade Zero?
An early PlayStation hands-on preview says the player can hold L1 to block. Because that report describes a preview build, the final button mapping and detailed block rules should be confirmed when the release documentation is available.
Does a successful parry guarantee a counterattack?
Preview coverage describes counterattacks after successful defensive reactions, but it does not establish one universal punish animation or guarantee for every enemy move.
Are all attacks parryable?
The available official and preview material does not say whether every enemy attack can be parried. Treat claims about a complete attack-class rulebook as unconfirmed unless S-Game publishes it.
How many weapons are announced?
The official 2026 deep dive announces more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, plus upgrades, accessories, ranged options and summons.
