Short answer: a PS2 disc will not run as a PS2 game on a standard PS5. On a homebrew-enabled PS5, PS5SX2 provides a documented way to run PS2 game files, but the project’s October 12, 2026 release listing mentions a disc launcher without documenting a complete physical-disc procedure. Unless the current release notes confirm that procedure for your exact console model and firmware, treat direct PS2-disc playback as unverified.
What a PS5 can—and cannot—do with a PS2 disc
The PS5’s ability to read DVD media does not mean it can run PlayStation 2 games. Sony’s PS5 Instruction Manual states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is the answer for a PS5 running standard Sony software: inserting a PS2 game disc will not make it playable.

There are two different questions here: whether the console can physically read a disc, and whether its software can run the game on that disc. A compatible optical drive addresses only the first. It does not add official PS2 game compatibility.

The CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support. Sony specifies that certain CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 Digital Edition groups can use a separately sold CFI-ZDD1 series disc drive. Check Sony’s compatibility information for your precise model group before buying or attaching a drive. Even when a drive is supported, Sony’s PS2-disc restriction still applies.

What the homebrew route does
PS5SX2 is a PS5 port of the PCSX2 emulator. Its project documentation describes running PS2 game files on a jailbroken PS5. This is distinct from official PS5 backwards compatibility: it depends on a compatible jailbroken console, additional homebrew components, and game files rather than simply inserting a PS2 disc and launching it through the normal PS5 interface.
The documented setup calls for a jailbroken PS5, the PS5SX2 Helper payload together with kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, a PS2 BIOS dump made from the user’s own console, and PS2 game files. The project says BIOS files, games, and keys are not bundled; users must provide their own. Do not download BIOS files or game images from unofficial sources. Use only material you are entitled to use and follow applicable law.

How to use the documented game-file workflow
The project’s documentation describes copying game files to the console and launching the app. It does not establish a universal, step-by-step setup for every PS5 model and firmware, so follow the current PS5SX2 instructions for the exact combination you have rather than relying on generic jailbreak directions.

- Read the current PS5SX2 documentation and release notes. Confirm the required versions and setup for PS5SX2 Helper, kstuff, and ShadowMountPlus before proceeding. The available project instructions identify these components but do not establish that every release or console combination uses identical steps.
- Prepare your own BIOS dump and PS2 game files. The documented emulator route requires both. The project does not provide them.
- Copy the game files to the PS5 as directed by the project. Its instructions describe copying the files to the console; use the project’s current guidance for supported locations and formats rather than guessing.
- Launch PS5SX2 using the project’s documented method. Test one title at a time and consult the project’s game table for reported results. A listed test is not a promise that the game will work for every user or configuration.
Can PS5SX2 launch a physical PS2 disc directly?
The PS5SX2 release listing dated October 12, 2026 says its helper includes “the installer and the disc launcher.” That announcement is evidence that a disc-launcher feature is mentioned, but it does not specify supported disc types or provide a complete physical-disc workflow. It therefore does not establish that a PS2 disc can be inserted, selected, and played directly on a particular homebrew-enabled PS5.

Before trying a physical disc, check the current release notes and project documentation for explicit instructions covering your PS5 model, firmware, and disc-drive configuration. If they do not document those details, use the documented game-file workflow instead of assuming that the launcher reads PS2 discs. A disc drive’s ability to read DVDs is not proof that this particular launcher supports PS2 game discs.

Compatibility and common points of confusion
- “My PS5 reads DVDs, so it should play PS2 discs.” DVD reading is a media capability, not PS2 software compatibility. Sony’s manual explicitly excludes PS2 software from disc playback.
- “A disc drive for a Digital Edition makes it compatible.” The separately sold drive for specified model groups enables disc reading; it does not add native PS2 support.
- “My firmware is close to one in the project table.” The project says unlisted firmware has not been tried. Treat that as unknown, not as confirmed compatibility.
- “The game appears in the test table, so it will work for me.” The project cautions that its game tests are not a compatibility guarantee. Results can differ by title, settings, console, and firmware.
- “The release mentions a disc launcher, so all PS2 discs are supported.” The short listing does not specify disc compatibility or explain the physical-disc workflow. Look for explicit release-specific instructions before relying on that feature.
In short, the dependable distinction is between unsupported native PS2-disc playback and the documented homebrew method that runs user-supplied game files. The release listing’s disc-launcher mention is not enough on its own to establish direct PS2-disc playback.
