How to Play Purchased PC Games Offline and Keep Installers for Later

Prepare each game while you still have an internet connection. Update the launcher and game, start the game once, finish every first-run installer and license prompt, enable the store’s offline mode when available, then disconnect networking and test. For future reinstalls, keep complete installer files—preferably on two separate external drives—and record which games still need a launcher, account sign-in, third-party DRM or online services.

Offline behavior belongs to the individual game and its dependencies, not just to the store that sold it. A single-player title may work perfectly without a connection while another game in the same library may require authentication, a third-party launcher or an online server.

What “offline play” actually includes

There are three separate questions behind an offline setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can the installed game start without internet? This depends on the game’s DRM, launcher checks and first-run components.
  • Can you reinstall it without internet? This depends on whether you have standalone installers or only a launcher-managed download.
  • Which features disappear offline? Multiplayer, cloud synchronization, achievements, friends lists, leaderboards and other network services may stop working even when the core single-player game runs.

Do not treat a successful download as proof of offline readiness. A game can download completely yet fail later because it has not completed a first launch, a redistributable installation, an ownership check or an update. Likewise, an installer archive can restore the game files while a third-party launcher still asks for an account check.

Make a title inventory before disconnecting

Start with a simple list of every game you expect to use away from the internet. For each title, note the store, the account that owns it, the installed version, the launcher involved and whether another publisher launcher or DRM component opens during startup. Add the game’s save location if you know it, and mark whether saves are local, cloud-only or both. The important part is to record what you actually observe rather than relying on the store’s name.

Use a separate status such as tested offline, needs more preparation or online-dependent. This prevents a common mistake: assuming that every game in a Steam, Epic or GOG library behaves alike. It also tells you which titles deserve a final rehearsal after a major update or a move to another computer.

The reliable preparation procedure

Use this sequence for every title you want available during travel, a planned outage or a long-term archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update while connected. Update the launcher and the game. Allow queued patches and required components to finish. If an update is waiting, do not begin the offline test yet.
  2. Launch the game once. Reach the main menu or another point showing that first-run setup is complete. Let the game install redistributables, configure files and display any license or account prompts. If another launcher appears, complete its setup too.
  3. Confirm local content. Load a real save if one exists, create a new save or reach a checkpoint, and verify that the game is not depending on a cloud-only copy. Cloud synchronization can be useful online but is unavailable when disconnected.
  4. Set the launcher for offline use. Confirm the store client’s offline option where one exists. Some clients enable it automatically when they start without connectivity; others require preparation while online.
  5. Close the game and client cleanly. This gives the launcher a chance to save the offline authorization and local configuration.
  6. Disconnect networking completely. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or use the operating system’s network controls. Testing with a working connection can hide a failed offline check.
  7. Start the game again. Verify that it reaches the expected menu and that your local saves load. Test at least one save operation and, if possible, quit and restart once while still disconnected.
  8. Write down the result. Record the store, game version, required launcher, third-party components, installer filenames and the date of the successful test.

If a title fails this test, do not assume the entire store is unsuitable. Mark that specific game as requiring additional preparation or an internet connection. A later patch can change the result, so update the note whenever you retest.

Account, DRM and launcher dependencies

Offline preparation does not remove ownership requirements. A game may remember an authorization locally after a successful online launch, while another title may ask for a sign-in every time or whenever its files change. Third-party launchers deserve their own entry in your inventory: they can have separate updates, installers, credentials and offline settings.

Do not delete a launcher simply because the game itself is installed. If the title starts through that launcher, test the complete chain with networking disabled. A copied game folder, a restored backup or an installer set is useful only if the required account and authentication steps have also been satisfied.

Store-by-store offline behavior

Store Standalone installer Launcher after installation Offline eligibility What is unavailable offline Important limitation
Steam Not universal. Steam’s Backup feature can help with some games. Usually still involved for games installed through Steam. Title-specific; launch and test each game in Offline Mode. Network services supplied by the game or Steam. Valve warns that games using third-party installers or downloaders may not work with Steam Backup.
Epic Games Launcher No general standalone installer workflow is established for the reviewed support guidance. Required for supported offline launches. Only supported, already-installed single-player games. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services. Not every game supports Offline Mode.
GOG Yes. The library provides downloadable offline backup installer files. GOG GALAXY is optional for single-player offline mode under GOG’s policy. Single-player offline access is a stated policy requirement, but online-only features still need connectivity. Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards and other online-only features. Download every numbered installer part and any patches or DLC you want to preserve.

Use the table as a starting point, not a substitute for testing. The decisive questions are always the particular game’s startup behavior, its external services and the files you have actually preserved.

Steam: prepare and test each game

How Steam Offline Mode works

Steam Offline Mode is not a blanket switch that makes an entire library independent of the internet. Steam Support instructs users to launch the games they want to use offline and verify that there are no remaining update or installation requirements. The check is therefore game-specific.

While online, open each intended game, let all updates complete and finish its first launch. Then put Steam into Offline Mode and start that same game. If Steam reports that the game cannot be started in Offline Mode, its client or files need updating, or the title has another authentication dependency. Reconnect, complete the required update or installation, and repeat the disconnected test.

What Steam Backup can and cannot do

Steam includes a Backup feature that can copy installation data for supported titles. It is useful for reducing a later download, but it is not a universal standalone installer. Valve specifically warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with Steam Backup.

Keep notes for games that open another launcher, run a separate installer or request an account check. A copied Steam library folder is also not proof that a clean computer can reinstall and run the game offline. Preserve the Steam backup, but retain the original account and launcher requirements in your notes.

Steam-specific failure cases

  • “Cannot start in Offline Mode.” Reconnect and look for pending Steam or game updates, first-run installers or license prompts. Complete them, then test again without networking.
  • A game opens a third-party launcher. Treat that launcher as a separate dependency. Launch it while online, complete its own setup and test the game with all networking disabled.
  • A backup restores files but the game still asks to sign in. The backup restored data, not necessarily the title’s external authentication. Keep the game marked as online-dependent unless a disconnected test succeeds.
  • The library is copied to another computer. Expect Steam and any external launcher to perform their own installation or account checks. The copy is a convenience, not evidence of a self-contained installer.

Epic Games Launcher: only eligible installed games work offline

Epic’s support description is narrow: “Offline Mode lets you play supported single-player games using the Epic Games Launcher without an internet connection.” The launcher automatically enables Offline Mode when it starts without internet or when connectivity is lost.

Before disconnecting, install the game, update it and launch it once. Then close the launcher, disable networking and start the launcher again. Test the game from the installed library. Because support is title-specific, test every game rather than assuming that one successful result applies to the rest of the library.

Offline play on Epic does not provide multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements or other online services. Make sure important saves are present locally before you travel; a cloud-only save may not be available while disconnected. If the game refuses to launch offline, reconnect and check whether it is an unsupported title or still has a first-run requirement.

GOG: the most direct installer-preservation workflow

Downloading the complete offline set

In your GOG library, use the “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” option. Download every numbered installer part shown for the game. If you want a particular patch, language pack or DLC, download those files as well. Missing one numbered part can make the set incomplete even when the first file is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store the files together in a clearly named folder that includes the game title and version. Do not rename numbered parts in a way that obscures their sequence. Keep a text file beside them listing the required order, included DLC and the date you downloaded the set.

Installing without the app

GOG’s support guidance says the game can be installed without the app by running the offline installer files. This is the key distinction between a standalone installer set and a launcher-managed library: the installer files themselves are what you preserve and later execute.

GOG’s developer documentation explains that offline installers are generated after builds are published, and an updated build can take several hours to appear. If you are archiving a newly updated game, check the library again later before treating the first download as the final version. If a patch or DLC matters to you, archive it with the base installer rather than assuming it will be available from the installed copy later.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

What GOG’s policy does—and does not—promise

In a policy article published 17 March 2022, GOG states: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” The same article says, “Games you bought and downloaded can never be taken from you or altered against your will,” and that “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” These are GOG policy commitments concerning purchased and downloaded games.

They do not make online-only features work without a connection. GOG’s developer documentation notes that multiplayer, friends and leaderboards cannot be available offline when those features depend on online services. A game can therefore be installable and playable offline in single-player while its network modes remain unavailable.

How to preserve installers safely

Use two independent copies

Copy installer sets, Steam backups and any required patches or DLC to an external hard drive or USB SSD. Keep a second copy in a separate physical location. Two copies on the same computer do not protect against drive failure, theft or accidental deletion.

Capacity is user-dependent because game and DLC sizes vary. Check the total size of each completed folder before choosing storage. Leave free space for future patches if you intend to maintain the archive. An external drive for PC game backups or a USB SSD for game installers is useful because it can be disconnected from the gaming computer after the copy is complete.

Keep a readable inventory

Create a plain-text inventory for each game containing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Store and account used to purchase it.
  • Game version and download date.
  • Every installer filename or backup folder name.
  • Required launcher, third-party DRM or account authentication.
  • Included patches, language packs and DLC.
  • Date of the last successful disconnected launch.
  • Features that were unavailable offline.
  • Location of the primary and secondary storage copies.

This record prevents a common failure: having a large archive but not knowing which files belong together or whether a title still needs a launcher. Use filenames and folders that make the relationship between a base installer, numbered parts, patches and DLC obvious.

Verify the copies

After copying, compare the file counts and total sizes between the source and each external copy. Safely eject the drive, reconnect it and open the archive to confirm that the files are readable. For a critical long-term collection, perform a test installation from the backup copy rather than relying only on a file transfer finishing without an error.

Reinstalling later without internet

When the original computer is unavailable, begin with the inventory rather than opening a random file. Select the correct game version, gather every numbered installer part and place required patches or DLC in the same working area. For GOG, run the offline installer files in their intended sequence and install the base game before applying additional content. For Steam, restore the supported backup through Steam and be prepared for the client or a third-party installer to request account authentication. Epic’s offline workflow assumes the game is already installed through the Epic Games Launcher, so retain the launcher and account access even when you expect to play disconnected.

After installation, repeat the disconnected launch test on the replacement computer. Operating-system changes, missing first-run components or a different launcher state can produce a different result from the original machine. Do not wait until travel to discover that the archive contains files but not the startup path.

Testing before travel or an outage

Run a final rehearsal on the computer you will actually use:

  1. Update the launcher and game while online.
  2. Launch the game and complete all first-run prompts.
  3. Confirm that the intended save is stored locally.
  4. Exit normally.
  5. Disable Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet.
  6. Start the launcher or installer according to the store’s offline workflow.
  7. Load a save, play long enough to reach a checkpoint and create a new local save.
  8. Quit, restart once more while still disconnected and confirm the new save remains.
  9. Check that the expected single-player content opens and note any missing online feature.

Record the result immediately. A test made months ago may no longer describe the installed version after updates, operating-system changes or a replaced drive. If you update a title shortly before departure, repeat the test instead of relying on the older note.

Troubleshooting a failed offline launch

The launcher insists on connecting

Reconnect and check for incomplete updates, a pending first-run component or a sign-in prompt that was never completed. Launch the game once more while online, close it cleanly, then repeat the disconnected test. If it still requires a connection, classify the title as online-dependent rather than risking a trip without a backup plan.

The game starts but a feature is missing

This is expected for services that live on remote servers. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, friends and leaderboards may disappear offline. Use local saves and single-player modes, and synchronize cloud saves before disconnecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An installer set will not run

For GOG, confirm that every numbered installer part is present and that any required patch or DLC files were copied. Re-download a missing or damaged part while online. For Steam, remember that a backup may not include a third-party installer or downloader; restore the backup and document the external dependency instead of treating it as a standalone installer.

A backup drive is unavailable

Use the second copy stored separately. Once access is restored, replace the failed copy and update the inventory with the new storage location. Do not erase the only good copy until the replacement has been opened and checked.

Which store is best for offline play?

If your priority is a genuinely standalone reinstall, GOG has the clearest workflow in the reviewed guidance: the library exposes offline backup installers, the app is optional for single-player offline mode under its stated policy, and the installer files can be run without the app.

Steam can work well for installed games after careful preparation, but Offline Mode is title-specific and Steam Backup has explicit exclusions for games using third-party installers or downloaders. Epic supports offline use for eligible installed single-player games, while the launcher remains part of that process and online services are unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical choice is therefore game-by-game. Before buying or archiving a title, check whether it has a standalone installer, whether a launcher remains required, whether third-party DRM is present and whether the features you care about are local or server-based. No storefront label can answer all four questions for every game.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play every game I bought on Steam without internet?

No. Steam Offline Mode is title-specific. Launch and update each game while connected, complete first-run requirements, then test that game with networking disabled. A title that uses a third-party launcher or authentication may still need a connection.

Does Steam Backup create a standalone installer?

Not universally. Steam Backup can preserve installation data for supported games, but Valve warns that many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with it. Keep notes about any external launcher or sign-in requirement.

Can Epic Games Store games work offline?

Supported, already-installed single-player games can use Epic Games Launcher Offline Mode. The launcher enables that mode when it starts without internet or loses connectivity, but multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements and other online services are unavailable, and not every title supports offline play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I keep a GOG game for a future reinstall?

Open the game in your GOG library and choose “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.” Save every numbered installer part, plus any patches or DLC you want. The files can later be run without the GOG app.

Is GOG Galaxy required for offline single-player games?

GOG’s policy article published 17 March 2022 says the GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode. Online-only features such as multiplayer, friends and leaderboards still require their services.

What should I save besides the game files?

Keep the required launcher details, account used to purchase the game, version, installer filenames, patches, DLC and the date of your last successful offline test. Preserve local saves and record which features disappeared when disconnected.

How many backup drives do I need?

Keep two independent copies, preferably on external storage in separate physical locations. Capacity depends on the size of your games and DLC; check each completed folder and leave room for future patches if you plan to update the archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why should I test offline after an update?

An update can introduce a new first-run requirement, launcher dependency or authentication check. A successful test from months earlier does not prove that the current installed version will start without internet.

The Bottom Line

Prepare and test every title individually: finish updates and first-run setup online, verify a disconnected launch and local save, then preserve complete installers or backups on two separate external copies. GOG offers the clearest standalone-installer path; Steam and Epic can work offline for eligible games but retain more title-specific or launcher-specific dependencies.
