Start with Peacebreaker Cannons for ranged gunplay or Arc-Knives for close-range melee; the right choice depends on how you want to fight, not on a universally best build.
How Rafa’s Overdrive loop works
Overdrive is the central rhythm of Rafa’s combat. Activating an action skill starts the effect, boosting damage and movement speed. As long as the action skill remains active, Overdrive’s duration does not decrease. That makes action-skill uptime a useful priority when choosing skills and deciding how to engage.

In practical terms, use the active skill to create an advantage, then keep attacking in a way that helps sustain its duration. The details differ between Rafa’s two signature options: Peacebreaker Cannons support ranged shooting, while Arc-Knives reward closing the distance.

Choose your action skill: cannons or knives

How to play Peacebreaker Cannons
Keep targets in your crosshairs
Peacebreaker Cannons automatically fire at enemies in Rafa’s crosshairs, so keep your aim on the target you want them to attack. The cannons deal kinetic gun damage and let you contribute from range rather than relying on melee contact.
Use critical hits to support skill uptime
PlayBorderlands’ leveling recommendation pairs the cannons with critical-hit-focused gunplay because critical hits can restore action-skill duration. When an enemy’s weak point is exposed, aim for it where practical. Treat this as a useful build approach, not a requirement to use one specific weapon: the guide’s named gear is that author’s recommendation, and your available loot and level will affect what works for you.

How to play Arc-Knives
Mark enemies before committing
Arc-Knives deal melee damage and mark enemies. Each mark increases the damage the marked target takes, so the skill rewards focusing your attacks on enemies you have marked rather than spreading effort indiscriminately.
Dash in and use Blade Fury
The skill gives Rafa a forward dash to close distance, then lets him use Blade Fury against marked enemies for shock damage. Compared with the cannons, this asks you to fight closer to threats; choose it if you prefer an active melee rhythm and are comfortable committing to close-range attacks. Epic’s Rafa guide also describes the dash and marked-target attack.

Pick a skill tree to match your preferred range
- Remote Agent: the gun-focused tree, with synergies for Peacebreaker Cannons.
- This Year’s Gimmick: the melee-focused tree that houses Arc-Knives.
- People Person: a distinct third tree to consider if neither of those focused approaches matches your plan.
PC Gamer’s guide presents multiple Rafa builds, including leveling and endgame-oriented examples. Use them as starting points rather than fixed prescriptions: level, loot, difficulty, and personal preference all affect a build decision. A route that suits one player’s equipment or preferred combat range may not suit yours.
Build for leveling, then adjust as you progress
For a leveling build, prioritize a playstyle you can use consistently and keep your weapons current as Rafa gains levels. PlayBorderlands publishes a level 1–60 route with specific gear recommendations, but its equipment list represents one build author’s choices, not mandatory kit. Swap in suitable upgrades as your drops and needs change, and reassess your skill choices if your preferred action-skill loop changes.

Check patch notes before relying on exact interactions
Skill behavior can change with updates. In its March 26, 2026 update notes, official Borderlands Support said: “Peacebreaker Cannons now fire faster when you put points into Deft Hands.” The same notes corrected Parting Gift so it marks enemies only during the Action Skill as intended, and corrected Blowout so it creates Corrosive projectiles on critical hits against target dummies. Those notes verify those specific corrections; check the official update notes for later changes before treating a detailed interaction or balance assumption as current.
