This guide explains the traditional Snap card game: players reveal cards in turn, race to spot matching ranks, and try to win every card. It is not a guide to MARVEL SNAP, the digital card battler with its own rules.
How do you play Snap?
In the traditional multi-pile version, each player has a face-down draw pile and builds a face-up pile beside it. Players take turns revealing the top card of their draw pile. When the top cards of any two face-up piles have the same rank, the first player to call “Snap!” takes both piles. The last player who still has cards wins.

You match ranks, not suits: for example, a 7 matches another 7 regardless of suit. These rules follow Pagat’s description of the traditional game. Pagat’s Snap rules and variations were last updated on 4 October 2023.
What you need and how to set up
Players and cards
Snap can be played by two or more people. Pagat describes it as suitable for about two to six players before the game becomes unwieldy. Use a standard 52-card deck; suits do not matter, so only rank matches count. A deck with special matching sets can also work, but it is optional.

Deal the cards
- Choose a dealer and shuffle the deck.
- Deal all the cards as evenly as possible among the players. Some players may have one more card than others.
- Each player keeps their cards face down in a stack and must not look at them.
- Leave space beside each stack for that player’s face-up pile.
How to play Snap, turn by turn
Reveal a card
The player to the dealer’s left starts; play moves clockwise. On your turn, take the top card from your face-down stack and turn it face up beside your stack. Do not peek first. Turn it so the other players can see the card before you do.
Call “Snap!” on a match
Watch the top card of every face-up pile. If the top cards of two piles show the same rank, any player who spots the match may call “Snap!” The first caller takes both matching face-up piles and places them face down at the bottom of their draw stack.

If your face-down draw stack is empty but you still have a face-up pile, turn that pile over without shuffling it. It becomes your new face-down draw stack, and you continue playing. If you have no cards left at all, you are out of the game. Play continues until one player remains with cards; that player wins.

Agree on false calls and ties before you start
There is no single universal penalty for a false Snap call or rule for simultaneous calls. Decide how to handle both before dealing, so disputes do not interrupt the game.
- False calls: Pagat describes a version in which a false caller’s face-up pile is moved to a central “snap pool.” A player can later claim that pool by matching its top card and calling “snap pool.” This is one documented option, not a required rule.
- Simultaneous calls: If two players call at once, agree in advance how to decide who gets the piles. Pagat describes using an object placed in the middle as a way to settle the contest.
Other versions of Snap
Single-pile Snap
In a separate version described by Pagat, everyone turns cards onto one central pile. Players call Snap when two consecutive cards match. This can suit very young players, but its false-call and tie rules differ from the multi-pile game above; agree on those details before playing.

Two-player competitive Snap
The National Museum of Singapore describes a distinct two-player variation using 36 cards. Players split the cards into equal stacks and reveal cards simultaneously. When cards match, they race to cover the matching cards while calling “SNAP!” Play repeats until the cards have been turned over, and the player with the most cards wins. This is a separate competitive variation—not the traditional multi-pile game, where players reveal in turn and the last player with cards wins. MARVEL SNAP is a digital card battler, not the traditional matching card game in this guide. Its official support page describes the goal as winning two of three locations by having the higher total power at a location; players may play up to four cards per location on each side. For those rules, see the official MARVEL SNAP how-to-play page and the official explanation of the game’s goal.
