The simplest currently documented official option is to play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past through the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics app on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the SNES library. Once the app is installed, open it, choose your play mode and controller setup, select the game, and follow its start prompts.
What you need to play
- A Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists Switch 2 compatibility as supported, with game behavior consistent with Switch. Nintendo’s SNES Classics listing has the current product details.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The service and membership offers vary by country, so check Nintendo’s local terms and availability before subscribing. Nintendo notes that internet access may periodically be needed to validate membership.
- A compatible controller for the play mode you choose. The optional full-size wireless SNES-style controller is not required.
The game is included in the SNES Classics library; this route is digital rather than a separate purchase of the game. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, though Switch Lite play may differ. See Nintendo’s product listing for supported modes and compatibility.

Start the game on Switch or Switch 2
- Open the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics app. If it is not installed, find it in Nintendo eShop and download it; a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the library.
- Choose the play mode and controller setup. For one player, Nintendo Support lists handheld, tabletop, or TV mode with a compatible controller. For multiple players using one system, use tabletop or TV mode and connect a compatible controller for each player.

The library’s multiplayer options do not make the original A Link to the Past campaign a multiplayer game. They describe features of the app or library, not a co-op mode in this adventure.

The original game uses a layout that may feel different from newer Zelda games. Nintendo’s official manual maps the controls as follows:

To talk to a villager, stand nearby and press A, B, X, or Y. To open a chest, stand in front of it and press A. Some actions require items found during the adventure: swimming requires the Zora’s Flippers, and running or performing a dash attack requires the Pegasus Boots. To dash, hold A and press a direction once you have those boots.
Modern features and controller options
Rewind
The SNES Classics app includes a rewind feature. Hold ZL and ZR to rewind gameplay. This is an app feature, not a change to the original game.

Play modes and controllers
Choose handheld play for a portable session, or use TV or tabletop mode with compatible controllers. For local multiplayer features offered by the app, Nintendo says each player needs a compatible controller; that library capability should not be confused with multiplayer support in this game’s campaign.

Optional SNES-style controller
Nintendo offers a full-size wireless SNES-style controller for the classics library through its member offer. It is optional: a standard compatible controller is enough to play. Availability and purchase limits can vary.

Is this the only way to play?
Nintendo currently lists the game in the Switch SNES Classics library and documents compatibility with Switch 2. That makes it the verified current official route covered here, not proof that no other edition or way to play exists. Current availability or pricing for other digital editions and physical cartridges is not established here, so check the relevant seller or Nintendo service in your region before making a decision. Nintendo’s October 16, 2024 announcement also describes the game’s availability through Nintendo Switch Online and notes that the service is not available in every country.
