There is no Valve-set free-space target that fits every Steam Deck owner. Check Steam > Settings > Storage, compare the free space shown there with the install sizes of the games you actually want, and leave a flexible buffer for updates and your own files. The right amount depends on your library and how you use the Deck.
How to work out how much room you need
- On your Steam Deck, open Steam > Settings > Storage. Check the free space shown for the internal drive and any connected microSD card.
- Look up the install size for each game you plan to add. Add those sizes together and compare the total with your available space.
- Leave some room beyond that total for game updates, downloaded content, and personal files. Choose a buffer that suits your library and habits; Valve does not specify a universal reserve in gigabytes or as a percentage.
Use per-game install sizes as estimates, not guarantees. Updates and optional content can change how much room a game needs, and Valve does not promise one fixed future update size or installation footprint for every game.

Why the storage shown in a listing is not all available for games
The capacity printed for a device or storage card is not the same as the free space available for game installs. Check the live Storage screen rather than relying on nominal capacity, then plan around the games you intend to install. Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet described internal storage options from 64 GB to 512 GB and the option to add up to 2 TB of microSD storage; those are figures from that booklet, not a current retail model list. Expand storage with a microSD card
A microSD card is the straightforward expansion option in Valve’s support guidance. Valve says that any UHS-I, class 3 or better card is supported. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer speeds. A card’s capacity adds room, but it does not guarantee a particular number of games because install sizes vary. Valve’s microSD card support guide.

Format the card on the Deck
- Insert the microSD card.
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Let Steam Deck format the card before using it for game storage. Valve identifies the format as ext4 with casefolding. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.
When an internal SSD upgrade makes sense
Replacing the internal SSD is a more involved alternative than adding a microSD card. Valve says it collaborated with iFixit on replacement parts and repair guides, and describes the question of how easy SSD replacement is for end users as “a bit complicated.” Treat it as an advanced option: check the exact Deck model and its current repair guidance before choosing a drive or attempting a replacement. Does installed storage matter for offline play?
Valve says an installed game can be played while the Steam Deck is offline unless that game requires an internet connection. Downloading games and online multiplayer require an internet connection. Offline play does not change how much storage the game occupies. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.
