Play the Zero Escape trilogy in release and story order: 1) Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999), 2) Virtue’s Last Reward, 3) Zero Time Dilemma. The modern Zero Escape: The Nonary Games collection contains only 999 and Virtue’s Last Reward, so you need Zero Time Dilemma separately to finish the series.
The correct Zero Escape order at a glance
There are three main Zero Escape games. The safest first playthrough follows the order in which they were released and the order in which the overarching story was presented:

| Order | Game | Original release | What it is | How to buy it today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) | Nintendo DS, 2009 | The first game and the starting point for the series | Included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games |
| 2 | Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR) | Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita, 2012 | The sequel and second game | Included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games |
| 3 | Zero Time Dilemma (ZTD) | 2016 | The third game and conclusion | Purchased separately |
If you see a recommended order that starts with Zero Time Dilemma, it is not the right route for a first-time player. Its events are presented in a non-linear way, but the game was made as the capstone to the trilogy, not as an introduction.

Why 999 comes first
999 establishes the series’ premise, terminology, characters and central mysteries. Later installments build on what the first game introduces. Playing it first lets those introductions and revelations arrive in their intended sequence instead of asking you to reconstruct the background after encountering later references.
The game combines visual-novel storytelling with escape-room-style puzzles. You do not need to know any plot details before beginning; in fact, going in without a summary protects the effect of the early discoveries. Treat 999 as the foundation for the other two games rather than as an optional prologue.
Which version should you choose?
The original Nintendo DS release is historically important, but it is not the simplest modern purchase. For a current playthrough, the practical route is the 999 edition included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. The collection packages the first two entries together, allowing you to move directly from 999 into VLR without locating separate legacy hardware.

2. Continue with Virtue’s Last Reward
Virtue’s Last Reward is the sequel and the second game in the series. It originally released for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012.
Why VLR follows 999
VLR assumes that the player has reached the end of 999 and rewards familiarity with the first game’s setup. Its position is not interchangeable with 999: starting here means meeting the series’ ideas and returning context out of order, while playing it second preserves the progression from the original game into its sequel.

Do not treat the title’s different hardware history as evidence that it is a side story. It is the second main entry. If you are using the modern collection, launch VLR only after completing 999.
VLR in the modern collection
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games contains both 999 and VLR. It is a two-game collection, not a three-game package. Finishing every part of that collection means you have completed the first and second games, but not the trilogy.

Zero Time Dilemma is the third Zero Escape game and the conclusion for longtime fans. It was released in 2016, with the publisher listing June 29, 2016 as its release date.
Why it must be last
The publisher describes Zero Time Dilemma as “the third game in the series.” It brings back characters and unresolved context from both earlier entries, so its impact depends on having played 999 and VLR first. Its structure uses non-linear events, but that is a storytelling device within the final game; it does not create a new recommended series order.
Beginning with ZTD can expose you to material intended for players who already understand the first two games. It can also make the earlier games’ introductions and reveals feel like backtracking. Save it for the end, after you have completed both games in The Nonary Games.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

ZTD is a separate purchase
Zero Time Dilemma is not included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. The collection covers 999 and VLR only, while ZTD is sold separately. Check the current store listing for your region and platform before buying, because availability and retailer inventory can change.
Is Zero Escape: The Nonary Games the whole series?
No. The name can be misleading if you expect a complete trilogy. Zero Escape: The Nonary Games combines the first two games: 999 and VLR. It does not include ZTD.
The collection is still the easiest modern starting purchase because it gives you the correct first and second games in one package. After completing both, obtain Zero Time Dilemma separately. The complete play sequence is therefore:
- Play 999 from Zero Escape: The Nonary Games.
- Play VLR from the same collection.
- Buy and play Zero Time Dilemma as the separate third game.
The publisher’s product description presents the collection as two Nonary games, and the Steam listing likewise identifies it as a two-game escape-room visual-novel collection. Those descriptions are consistent: “Nonary Games” in this product name refers to the two included titles, not every game in the franchise.

Why release order is safer than trying to rearrange the timeline
Players sometimes look for a chronological order because ZTD presents events in a non-linear fashion. That approach confuses two different things: the order of scenes inside a game and the order in which the games are designed to be experienced.
Release order keeps the series’ explanations and returning characters paced as intended. 999 introduces the world. VLR follows as the sequel. ZTD then acts as the conclusion for players who know both earlier games. Rearranging them does not unlock a hidden “true” route; it mainly risks encountering context before its introduction.
For a first playthrough, do not use a timeline assembled from isolated scenes, character appearances or spoiler-heavy summaries. Finish each game in the trilogy order, allowing the game itself to control when information is revealed. A timeline exercise can be interesting after you have completed all three, but it is not a better starting order.
A practical first-playthrough plan
Step 1: Confirm what you are buying
- Open the current store page for your country.
- Check that the product is Zero Escape: The Nonary Games if you want both opening entries together.
- Read the included-games list and confirm that it names 999 and VLR.
- Do not assume that the word “Games” means the third title is included.
Step 2: Play the collection in internal order
- Launch 999 first.
- Complete 999 before opening VLR.
- Start VLR as the sequel, not as an alternative route through the collection.
Step 3: Add the concluding game
- After finishing VLR, locate the separate listing for Zero Time Dilemma.
- Confirm the platform and regional edition before purchasing.
- Play ZTD last, since it is the third and concluding game.
Step 4: Keep editions straight
If you own older hardware, you may encounter the original DS, 3DS or Vita releases. Those versions correspond to the first and second games’ original launches, but the order does not change: 999, then VLR, then ZTD. A remastered or re-released edition changes presentation or platform, not its place in the narrative sequence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon ordering and buying mistakes
Starting with Zero Time Dilemma because its scenes are non-linear
Non-linear presentation inside ZTD does not make it an introductory game. It is still the third entry and the conclusion. Start with 999.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Stopping after The Nonary Games
The collection ends after VLR. If you want the full trilogy, you still need the separately sold ZTD.
Playing VLR before 999
VLR is the sequel. Even if you own it on a different system, its intended position remains second.
Assuming old hardware is required
999 originally appeared on Nintendo DS, and VLR originally appeared on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. The modern collection provides a current route to both, while platform availability for each edition should be checked in your region.

Release history and what it means for your order
| Game | Original release information | Series position |
|---|---|---|
| Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors | Nintendo DS, 2009 | First |
| Virtue’s Last Reward | Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita, 2012 | Second |
| Zero Time Dilemma | 2016; product page lists June 29, 2016 | Third and concluding game |
| Zero Escape: The Nonary Games | Product page lists March 24, 2017 | Collection of the first two games |
The release dates explain why the modern buying route can look different from the original hardware route. The first two games were originally separate releases years apart, while the later collection groups them together. The grouping changes convenience, not story order.
Quick decision guide
- You are new to the series: buy The Nonary Games, play 999, then VLR, then obtain ZTD.
- You already own 999: play it first, then continue with VLR and ZTD.
- You already own VLR but have not played 999: pause VLR and play 999 first.
- You own The Nonary Games: you have the first two games, not the complete trilogy.
- You are considering ZTD: buy it after completing both games in the collection.
- You are choosing between original and modern editions: choose the platform and edition available to you, but retain the same three-game order.
Final answer
The right first-play order is 999 → Virtue’s Last Reward → Zero Time Dilemma. Zero Escape: The Nonary Games covers the first two games only. Once you finish that collection, purchase Zero Time Dilemma separately and play it last.
