Your first priorities are a portal, shelter, and a Shield Generator. From there, survive cinder rain and dense Charred spawns, secure Flametal, raid Charred Fortresses for nine Bell Fragments, craft three Bells, and summon Fader—the boss whose defeat opens the route to the Deep North.

Where Ashlands fits in Valheim’s progression
Ashlands follows Mistlands and is gated by The Queen. Iron Gate describes it as the penultimate biome; in the 1.0 progression released on September 9, 2026, the Deep North comes after it. The biome is therefore not a side area for early exploration. Its enemies, terrain and resource chain assume that you have completed Mistlands and can replace lost equipment without relying on a nearby safe region.

On an older save, pick it up again if the Ashlands recipes do not appear; Iron Gate’s preparation guidance notes that this can retrigger recipes. If you have not played for a while, practice in a safer biome or adjust World Modifiers before sailing. Ashlands is intended to be harder than the biomes before it, not simply a larger version of Mistlands.
Prepare in Mistlands before you sail
Finish the Queen progression
Defeat The Queen first and confirm that the Queen-derived materials are registered on the character and world you will use. You need them for the Drakkar’s Ceramic Plates, and an upgraded Artisan Table is part of that crafting path. If a character who defeated The Queen cannot see the recipe on an older world, collect the dropped item again before troubleshooting the shipyard.

Pack for a one-way landing
Your first trip is an expedition and an evacuation plan at the same time. Bring your strongest available protection, food and healing supplies, weapons that cover physical and elemental damage, and enough building material to create an operational outpost immediately. The specific quantities below are the minimum infrastructure that prevents a failed landing from becoming a corpse-recovery voyage.
| Item or material | Why it matters on the first landing |
|---|---|
| Portal materials | Lets you return to your established network as soon as the beach is secure. |
| Stonecutter and stone | Enables durable construction and Grausten building instead of a fragile wooden camp. |
| Shield Generator materials and bone fuel | Creates a protected dome against cinder rain, Charred Marksman arrows and lava fireballs. |
| Emergency repair materials | Keep them on the Drakkar so a damaged ship or workbench does not strand you. |
| Campfire materials | Allow you to spawnproof a route and create stamina and recovery points as you advance. |
Do not fill every inventory slot with optional loot on the outbound voyage. The landing site determines whether you can place the portal and generator before the next wave, so construction supplies have a higher survival value than extra trophies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild the ship that survives the Ashlands ocean
The surrounding sea boils. The Drakkar is the ship that survives this crossing; plan the voyage around it rather than attempting to escort a smaller vessel. The current guide lists this recipe at a Workbench:
| Drakkar component | Quantity | Crafting note |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Nails | 100 | Use the listed quantity for the current recipe. |
| Ceramic Plates | 30 | Queen-derived materials and an upgraded Artisan Table are required for these plates. |
| Finewood | 50 | Gather before departure; replacing a lost ship in Ashlands is difficult. |
| Yggdrasil Wood | 25 | Bring the full amount to the Workbench. |
These quantities describe the recipe documented for the current guide and should be checked against the live game if a patch changes crafting. Load emergency repair materials aboard the Drakkar, choose a landing approach that gives you room to turn away, and avoid treating the ship as a permanent safe zone: lava, ranged attacks and a bad docking angle can still turn the crossing into a recovery operation.
Make the first landing an infrastructure operation
The docking attempt is one of Ashlands’ most dangerous moments because you are exposed, have limited room to maneuver, and may not yet have a portal. A ruin or defensible rock near the shoreline is preferable to an open beach.
- Scout while approaching. Look for a landing line that does not force the Drakkar into lava or a pocket surrounded by enemies. Keep enough sea room to reverse course.
- Disembark only when you can place structures. Have portal and construction materials in the active inventory before stepping onto land.
- Place the portal first. Connect it to your home network before hauling loot inland. If enemies interrupt the build, retreat to the ship, reposition and try again rather than sprinting into unknown terrain.
- Put down a compact shelter and work area. A Stonecutter lets you replace temporary wood with Grausten as soon as possible.
- Install and fuel the Shield Generator. Its dome blocks cinder rain, Charred Marksman arrows and lava fireballs. Fuel it with bone materials and treat it as the center of the outpost.
- Mark the route back to the ship. Campfires and visible structures turn a night retreat into a known path instead of a search through lava fields.
Once the portal and generator work, expand the outpost only as far as needed for repairs, storage and a safe staging area. A small protected foothold is more valuable than an impressive base that consumes time and attracts every spawn in the area.

Build for cinder rain, lava and fire
Why wood fails
Cinder rain can ignite and wear down wooden structures. Wood is quick for an emergency roof, but an exposed wooden dock, storage room or portal hut can become a liability while you are fighting. Keep temporary pieces close to the ship only long enough to replace them.
Use Grausten for the permanent shell
Grausten is the safer long-term construction material in Ashlands. Use the Stonecutter to build the portal room, generator cover, repair area and storage in Grausten where possible. Protect openings and avoid placing critical stations directly beside lava; a wall that survives cinder rain can still leave you trapped if the approach itself is hazardous.
Make the generator the protected core
Position the Shield Generator so its dome covers the portal and the work area, not merely a decorative corner of the base. Keep bone fuel in storage inside the protected zone and check the generator before leaving on a long inland run. The dome’s protection is specific but valuable: it stops the listed airborne and fire threats while you repair, sort loot or wait out a dangerous approach.
Move through Ashlands without donating a corpse
Control stamina and visibility
Walk instead of sprinting when you are crossing unfamiliar ground or saving stamina for a fight. Explore by day when visibility is better, and create a chain of campfires along routes you intend to reuse. Campfires help spawnproof the path and give you recognizable, safer checkpoints between the outpost, mines and fortresses.
Do not chase a wounded enemy across lava or a ridge you have not cleared. Ashlands terrain turns a single pursuit into a fight with a second group, a ranged attacker or a fall route that cannot be climbed in time. Pull enemies back toward your campfire network and the generator’s protected area.
Prioritize targets in the right order
| Priority or enemy | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Charred Warlocks | Prioritize them first; their ranged pressure can make every other engagement worse. |
| Charred Marksmen | Break line of sight, use the Shield Generator’s dome when fighting near the outpost, and avoid crossing open ground under fire. |
| Charred Warriors | Fight after the dangerous ranged threats are controlled; preserve stamina for blocks, parries and retreats. |
| Twitchers | Do not let fast attackers surround you while your attention is on a larger target. |
| Morgen | Lightning is particularly effective because Morgen is weak to it; do not rely on a single damage type. |
| Fallen Valkyries | Spirit damage is a useful answer to their weakness. |
Many Ashlands enemies resist pierce and are immune to poison, so a build that worked by stacking arrows or poison in an earlier biome can lose efficiency here. Spirit, frost and lightning are useful damage categories. Carry options rather than assuming one weapon solves every encounter, and choose between close-range parrying and distance based on the terrain around you.
Choose a combat style that matches your group
Melee and ranged weapons
Melee rewards stamina management, timing and a clear retreat path. It is strongest when you can isolate one target near a campfire or wall. Ranged weapons let you pull a Warlock, Marksman or other priority target away from a pack, but ammunition and the biome’s pierce resistance make damage-type flexibility important. Use elevation and solid cover instead of standing in open cinder rain.
Magic and elemental damage
Magic can exploit the elemental weaknesses that matter in Ashlands, especially lightning against Morgen and spirit against Fallen Valkyries. The trade-off is resource management: reserve the relevant ammunition or casting resources for priority enemies and bosses rather than spending everything on minor spawns. Frost, lightning and spirit options give you more answers than poison-focused equipment.

Solo or co-op
Valheim supports solo play, groups of up to ten players total, and independent player-hosted servers. Ashlands’ difficulty changes with the cost of a mistake more than with a simple division of enemy health.

| Approach | Advantages | Risks and mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | You control every pull, loot decision and portal destination. | A death can leave all recovery work to one character; keep routes short, spawnproofed and connected to the portal. |
| Co-op | Players can split building, scouting, ranged pressure and corpse recovery. | Noise and separate pulls can multiply spawns; agree on a retreat point and regroup before entering a fortress. |
| Player-hosted server | A persistent world lets teammates build the outpost or mine while others prepare elsewhere. | Coordinate portal names, fuel checks and expedition timing so no one arrives at an unprotected landing. |
In a group, assign one player to maintain the landing infrastructure and another to mark the route. That division prevents everyone from carrying loot while nobody carries the materials needed to recover from a death.

Find the tools for metal logistics
Molten Cores found in Putrid Holes or fortresses let you build a Stone Portal. Unlike a standard wooden portal, a Stone Portal can move metals and other restricted items. Build this connection before committing to repeated mining runs; otherwise each load of Flametal requires a dangerous sea crossing or a long chain of local storage.
Mine from solid ground first
Flametal is the key Ashlands progression resource. Start with deposits near solid land, where you can retreat, repair and defend the miner. Deep-lava deposits are a later risk: defer them until you have safer tools such as Basalt Bombs. The goal is not to extract every visible node on the first expedition; it is to establish a repeatable route that brings metal back alive.
- Locate a deposit from a defensible side and mark it on the map.
- Clear or avoid nearby spawns before beginning the mining animation.
- Keep stamina and a retreat line available; do not mine with your back against lava.
- Return ore to the Stone Portal or protected outpost in small, recoverable loads.
- Only attempt deep-lava deposits after the safer approach is routine and you have Basalt Bombs available.
Raid Charred Fortresses for Bell Fragments
Charred Fortresses are the main source of Bell Fragments and contain other valuable loot. They are also concentrated combat spaces, so approach them as operations rather than isolated treasure chests. Establish a nearby campfire route, keep a portal connection behind you, and agree on a retreat point before entering with a group.
Search the fortress central tower for a Vegvísir. It marks Fader’s arena and removes the need to search the entire biome blindly once you have collected the summoning materials. Fortress loot is worth the risk, but a full inventory at the end of a run is not a reason to continue into an uncleared tower; return through the portal and make a second push.
Craft the Bells and summon Fader
You need nine Bell Fragments from Charred Fortresses. Craft three Bells from those fragments, then place the Bells around Fader’s arena identified by the fortress Vegvísir. The arrangement is the summoning requirement, so verify that all three are in position before starting a boss attempt.
- Raid enough Charred Fortresses to collect nine Bell Fragments.
- Return to the protected outpost and craft three Bells.
- Use the Vegvísir-marked arena as the meeting point; do not improvise a fight in an unscouted lava field.
- Place the three Bells around the arena and check your portal, food, repair access and elemental damage options.
- Enter the fight with a retreat plan and enough stamina and supplies for a prolonged encounter.
Fader is the final Ashlands objective. Defeating Fader is what moves your progression toward the Deep North, so treat the arena, portal and recovery route as part of the boss preparation rather than optional decoration.
Decide between speed and infrastructure
| Strategy | When it works | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Fast inland push | You already have strong equipment, know the terrain and can accept a costly recovery if the first route fails. | Less portal coverage, fewer campfires and a higher chance that one death strands your expedition. |
| Infrastructure first | You are playing solo, learning the biome or carrying valuable Flametal. | More time spent building portals, generators and route markers before reaching a fortress. |
For a first Ashlands world, infrastructure-first is usually the safer decision: the biome’s main hazards are environmental and logistical, so every protected checkpoint reduces the distance and exposure of the next attempt.
Wood or Grausten for an Ashlands base?
| Material | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Temporary landing cover, quick markers and emergency repairs. | Cinder rain can ignite and wear it down, making exposed permanent structures unreliable. |
| Grausten | Portal rooms, Shield Generator housing, storage, repair areas and the long-term outpost shell. | Requires a Stonecutter and more deliberate early construction. |
A practical compromise is to land with enough wood to survive the first minutes, then convert the critical pieces to Grausten before expanding. Keep the Drakkar’s repair materials separate from building stock so a damaged ship does not consume the supplies intended for your portal and generator.
Fix common Ashlands failures
The Drakkar recipe is missing
Confirm that The Queen is defeated, the Queen-derived item has been registered on this save, and the Artisan Table is upgraded. On older worlds, pick up the Queen’s dropped item again to trigger recipes.
The landing camp keeps burning
Replace exposed wood with Grausten, move the portal and work area under the Shield Generator’s dome, and keep bone fuel available. The generator protects against cinder rain and the listed ranged and lava-fire threats; it does not make an unsafe shoreline safe by itself.
You cannot recover a corpse
Stop making the same sprint. Reconnect through the portal, add campfires along a shorter route, and approach during daylight with a teammate if available. Pull enemies toward the generator rather than fighting on the corpse marker.
Flametal is visible but unreachable
Use solid-land deposits for the first supply chain. Mark deep-lava nodes and return after you have safer tools such as Basalt Bombs; losing a full load while attempting the hardest deposit first delays progression more than it accelerates it.
A fortress run collapses
Withdraw with whatever loot you can safely carry, repair and refuel the outpost, then return through the portal. Use the central-tower Vegvísir to identify Fader’s arena and avoid repeating a blind search through the same fortress.
