Before starting a survival horror game, learn its controls and settings, then treat ammunition, healing, and inventory space as a limited loadout. During play, assess each encounter before spending supplies: stealth, a detour, or retreat may be better than a fight, depending on the game.
Before you start: learn the game’s systems
Open the tutorial and controls
Use the game’s tutorial and controls menu to identify the actions you will rely on under pressure. Tutorials and available options differ by title. For The Callisto Protocol, KRAFTON says tutorials are available from the main menu and highlights dodging, blocking, and combining melee attacks with the GRP. Set difficulty and accessibility options deliberately
Check difficulty and accessibility settings before committing to a long session. Choose settings that fit the challenge and comfort you want; do not assume every game allows changes at any point. KRAFTON describes adjustable settings for The Callisto Protocol, while Bethesda recommends lowering difficulty in The Evil Within 2 if combat and resource pressure are too high. Count more than bullets. Consider healing items, defensive tools, crafting materials, open inventory slots, and whether the game provides safe storage. Carrying an upgrade or spare item can be useful, but it may displace something you need sooner.

In Resident Evil 2, PlayStation’s guide recommends using storage boxes for supplies you are unlikely to need immediately. It also notes that weapon modifications occupy inventory space, while inventory pouches expand capacity. Ammunition is finite, even if it is more plentiful than in the original game. - Before leaving a safe area, check what the next objective may require and keep room for likely pickups.
- Use storage when the game offers it; avoid carrying items only because they might be useful someday.
- Account for upgrades and weapon parts as inventory commitments, not free improvements.
- Use crafting systems when available, but make decisions based on that game’s recipes and materials.
Assess an encounter before spending ammunition
A fight is an option, not always the default. Before firing, consider whether you can sneak around an enemy, use cover or an environmental hazard, take another route, or retreat. The right choice depends on the enemy and the game’s rules: Sony’s Resident Evil 2 advice includes sneaking or passing some enemies, while Bethesda’s The Evil Within 2 guide recommends stealth, traps, or running when appropriate.

- Estimate the cost: weigh likely ammunition or healing use against what you will need for later encounters.
- Choose the lowest-cost viable tactic: fight, use stealth, exploit the environment, pass the enemy, or disengage according to the game’s mechanics.
- Reassess afterward: check supplies and inventory before moving on rather than assuming the next encounter will be similar.
Explore for resources and clues with a purpose
Search areas thoroughly when it supports survival or progression, but prioritize what helps with the next objective. In The Evil Within 2, Bethesda recommends using the Communicator to locate resources and revisiting explored areas when needed. In Resident Evil 2, documents can contain clues that help progression. These are examples of particular games, not systems every survival horror title shares. Other games make resupply work differently. PlayStation’s guide to VR game The Persistence recommends adapting tactics to current resources and scouting supply crates. Check what your chosen game signals, rewards, or makes available rather than assuming a resource-finding mechanic will transfer from another title. Compare games by the pressure they actually create
If you are choosing a game or preparing for a new one, these questions reveal what “limited resources” means in practice. The official guides provide examples, but do not establish universal genre rules.

- Inventory and storage: What limits carrying capacity? Do upgrades take space, and is there shared or safe storage?
- Stealth and escape: Can you sneak, plan a route, or disengage, and are those tactics viable for the threats you face?
- Exploration and resupply: Does the game signal supplies, reward revisiting areas, or tie resources to optional challenges?
- Difficulty and accessibility: Which settings can be adjusted, and when? Confirm this in the specific game’s menus or official guidance.
- Audio and platform features: Does the game use spatial audio or platform-specific features that affect your setup?
Set up your play session for attention and comfort
Audio advice is game-specific. KRAFTON recommends headphones for The Callisto Protocol, explaining: “Use headphones for the best experience. The game has been designed for immersive 3D audio.” Treat a headset as an optional setup choice when it suits the game and your platform, not as a requirement for all horror games.
