To preserve a PC game for future offline play, save more than its installed folder. Keep a complete installer or supported storefront backup, every required patch and DLC package, saves, configuration, runtime installers, product information and notes about the last working system. Then restore that set on a disconnected computer and launch it before trusting the archive. GOG’s offline installers are the most self-contained option when a title provides them. Steam’s Backup game files feature is convenient, but it remains client- and title-dependent and may omit custom files or games that use third-party installers. No archive can preserve a server, account service or online-only feature, so document those limits alongside the files.
What should a complete PC-game preservation set contain?
A complete set contains everything needed to reinstall the exact edition you own and reproduce its working state without relying on a future download. The game directory by itself is usually insufficient: storefront tools can omit saves, configuration, mods, redistributables or custom files, and a launcher may still be required.

Recommended Free Tools
- Installer or supported storefront backup: the original setup files, or the complete backup set produced by the store client.
- Version information: edition, region, language, patch level and the date the files were captured.
- Downloadable content: DLC installers, add-on activation files and any separate language packs or extras.
- Personal data: save games, configuration files, screenshots, controller mappings and mod files that are not part of the base installation.
- Dependencies: DirectX or Visual C++ redistributables, other runtime installers, compatibility settings and any required product key.
- Operating-system notes: the last known working Windows version, display or audio workarounds and launcher requirements.
- Documentation: a manifest describing what is present, how it was installed and which features still require an online service.
Keep a pristine copy of the original files. If you later apply a community fix, wrapper or compatibility setting, make a second copy with those changes and explain the difference in its notes. This lets you return to the untouched version if a modification causes a problem.
How do I inventory a game before backing it up?
Inventory the installed title before moving any files. The goal is to record the state you can actually restore, not merely the name of the game.

Identify the exact edition
Write down the store, edition or bundle name, language, region, executable version and installed patch level. Record every installed DLC item and whether it was delivered by the store, a separate installer or a key. A “complete edition” and a launch edition may have different files, and a later reinstall can silently produce a newer build.
Locate saves and configuration
Check the game’s documentation and its folders for saves, but also inspect the user profile locations used by Windows games, such as Documents, Saved Games and AppData. Some titles put saves beside the executable; others use a separate launcher directory. Copy the entire relevant folder when you cannot confidently distinguish settings from saves, then identify the files in your manifest.
Capture the working conditions
Record whether the game launched with the network disconnected, whether a client or external launcher appeared, and which compatibility options were enabled. Note controller drivers, graphics settings and any command-line switches that were necessary. These observations are often more useful years later than a screenshot of the installation directory.
How do I download a GOG game for offline installation?
Use the game’s account page and download the complete offline installer set rather than relying on an installed client. GOG’s account interface provides a “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” option for titles that support this route.
- Sign in to the account that owns the game and open the game in your library.
- Select DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.
- Download every setup part listed for the game. Large releases may be split into multiple numbered files; keep all parts together.
- Download separate DLC installers, language files and extras when they are listed outside the base installer.
- Place the files in one clearly named folder that includes the title, edition, language and capture date.
- Open the folder and verify that every part finished downloading before moving it to archival storage.
Do not rename numbered installer parts in a way that obscures their order. Keep the original filenames in the archive and put descriptive notes in a separate text file. A future installer may ask for the next part in sequence, and a missing or misnamed segment can make an otherwise complete download unusable.
After downloading, install the game to a test directory while connected only long enough to obtain anything the installer explicitly requires. Then repeat the installation with the network disconnected. Copy saves, configuration and mods into the test installation only after the clean base game launches, so you can tell whether a failure belongs to the installer or to personal files.

Steam’s documented path is Library → select the game → Properties → Installed Files → Backup game files. The resulting set can be moved to another drive or burned to recordable optical media, but it remains dependent on Steam and on the title’s support for the backup process.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Select the game, open its Properties, and choose Installed Files.
- Choose Backup game files and follow the location and media prompts.
- When the backup finishes, copy or move the complete result without deleting any generated index or metadata files.
- Separately copy saves, configuration, screenshots and mods that the title stores outside the installed game directory.
- Record whether the title uses a third-party installer, downloader or external launcher.
Steam warns that custom files and saves may require separate copying. Its backup process also excludes some games that use third-party installers or downloaders. Steam Offline Mode is not a universal substitute for an installer archive: active-connection games and some external-launcher titles can still fail when disconnected.

Which files do I need to copy outside the storefront backup?
Make a separate “user data and dependencies” package for anything the storefront does not guarantee to include.

Copy local saves, profile databases and any exported profile or key-binding files. Include files for every user account that played the game. If cloud synchronization is enabled, do not assume the cloud copy is permanent; retain the local files and note the date of the last successful save.
Configuration and custom content
Preserve graphics and input configuration, mod loaders, mod archives, load-order files and manually installed patches. Keep a clean game archive separate from a modded one. A mod may depend on a particular executable version, so record the patch level beside the mod files.
Runtimes and product information
Collect DirectX and Visual C++ redistributable installers that the game requires, along with any other runtime package supplied with the release. Record product keys, installation notes and launcher requirements in a plain-text manifest. A key or launcher requirement does not disappear simply because the game files are stored offline.
Extras and manuals
Include manuals, maps, artwork, soundtracks and other extras if they are part of the edition you want to preserve. They are not required to launch the game, but storing them with the installer prevents a future account or download change from separating them from the release.

Use a predictable folder layout and at least two independent copies. An external hard drive is a practical working copy; recordable optical media can serve as an additional offline copy because Steam documents moving or burning backups.
Use a manifest and stable names
A useful top-level name includes the title, edition, language and capture date. Inside it, keep separate folders such as Installer, DLC, Saves, Config-Mods, Runtimes and Docs. The manifest should list filenames, installer order, patch level, DLC, required keys, launch requirements and the result of the offline test.

Keep a clean copy and a working copy
The clean copy contains the files exactly as downloaded or generated by the storefront. The working copy may contain a compatibility wrapper, an unofficial patch or altered configuration. Never overwrite the clean copy when experimenting; preserving both states makes troubleshooting and later verification possible.
Verify integrity with hashes
Create a checksum list for the installer parts and important archives after the clean copy is complete. On Windows, a command such as certutil -hashfile "filename.exe" SHA256 can record a SHA-256 digest; on macOS or Linux, shasum -a 256 "filename" provides the same type of check. Store the resulting text file beside the archive and recalculate the hashes after copying to new media. A changed digest signals corruption or an intentional file change that should be documented.
Separate the copies physically
Keep the second copy on different storage from the working copy and disconnect at least one copy when it is not being updated. A single external drive is not a preservation strategy: failure, accidental deletion or malware can affect every file on it.
How do I test that a backup really works offline?
Restore the archive to a separate directory or spare computer, disconnect the network and perform a complete install-and-launch cycle. The test should prove that the files, dependencies and instructions are sufficient without silently downloading a replacement.
- Compare the archive’s hashes with the manifest and confirm that all installer parts are present.
- Use a separate directory or a spare computer so the test cannot damage the known-good installation.
- Disconnect Ethernet and Wi-Fi before beginning the installation.
- Install the base game, then apply patches in the documented order.
- Install DLC, language files and required runtimes from the archived packages.
- Apply the documented compatibility settings, but do not add optional mods yet.
- Launch the game, create or load a save, quit normally and launch it again.
- Test one preserved save and confirm that the expected DLC and language options appear.
- Record error messages, missing dependencies, activation prompts and any feature that cannot function offline.
If the game launches only after reconnecting, identify what made the connection: a launcher login, an update check, an activation service or an online-only feature. Add that dependency to the manifest instead of claiming the archive is fully offline. Steam specifically recommends testing backup media, and digital-preservation guidance likewise treats an offline restore test as essential evidence.
What is the difference between GOG offline installers, Steam Backup and a manual folder copy?
The methods differ mainly in how independent they are from a storefront, how faithfully they reproduce an edition and how much work remains after the copy is made.
| Method | Storefront independence | Installer and DLC completeness | Saves and configuration | Launcher or DRM dependence | Offline-test burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG offline installer set | Strongest: setup files are downloaded from the account page for standalone installation | Requires every listed setup part plus separate DLC, language files and extras | Must be copied separately when stored outside the installer | GOG describes its DRM-free policy; individual game requirements still belong in the manifest | Install all parts while disconnected and verify a second launch |
| Steam Backup game files | Limited: the backup remains tied to Steam and title-specific support | Convenient for supported titles; some third-party installers or downloaders are excluded | Steam says custom files and saves may require separate copying | Steam client, external launchers or active connections may still be required | Higher: test the backup media and Steam Offline Mode with the exact title |
| Manual installed-folder copy | Depends entirely on the game and its activation system | Often incomplete because installers, registry data, runtimes and DLC may be absent | Can include anything you deliberately locate and copy | Unknown until tested; launchers and activation checks can remain outside the folder | Highest: reconstruct dependencies and prove a clean offline install or launch |
For a GOG title with complete offline installers, the archive can be largely independent of the client. For a Steam title, use the client’s backup when supported, but preserve the client-specific metadata and separately collected user files. A manual folder copy is best treated as an additional snapshot, not as the sole preservation set.
What can an offline archive not preserve?
An archive preserves data and a historical version; it cannot recreate a service that no longer exists. Online multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, authentication servers, browser-based features and other server functions remain dependent on their original services.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Online-only play
If a title requires an active connection to start a match or validate a session, an offline installer cannot convert it into a single-player game. Preserve the base files and document the service dependency so the archive’s scope is clear.
Account and activation services
A stored product key does not guarantee that a future activation server will answer. Likewise, an external launcher may require an account even when the game’s executable is present. Record the exact prompt observed during the disconnected test.
Moving operating systems
Future Windows versions can change driver behavior, permissions, runtime support or compatibility. Preserve the last known working operating-system details and keep a separate compatibility-modified copy when you find a workaround. One backup also represents only the historical version you captured; frequent updates can make a later download materially different.

The installer reports a missing part
Compare the folder with the manifest and confirm that every numbered setup file is present and unchanged. Restore the original filenames if they were altered, then retry from the beginning in a new directory.
The game starts but a save or DLC is missing
Close the game and copy the archived save or configuration files into the user-profile location recorded during inventory. Check that the DLC installer ran for the same edition and patch level as the base game. Keep the clean installation untouched while testing these files.

A runtime or compatibility error appears
Install the archived DirectX or Visual C++ package and apply the documented compatibility settings. If the original runtime is unavailable on the current system, use the spare-computer test or a separately maintained compatibility environment, then record the result rather than modifying the clean archive.
The launcher demands a connection
Determine whether the title is merely missing an offline-mode setting or whether it performs an unavoidable activation or online check. Steam Offline Mode does not work for every active-connection game or external-launcher title. Mark the game as service-dependent if the disconnected test cannot pass.

How often should I refresh a preserved game archive?
Refresh an archive when you acquire a new edition, patch, DLC item or working compatibility solution, but never replace the original snapshot. Treat each meaningful version as a separate dated set with its own manifest and hashes.
- After a new download, compare the edition, patch level and DLC list with the previous manifest.
- Run the offline restore test again when a major operating-system update or hardware change affects the game.
- Copy any newly discovered save or configuration location into the user-data package.
- Verify both storage copies after migration to new media.
- Preserve notes about features that stopped working because a server or account service changed.
This approach avoids a common preservation mistake: keeping only the newest files and losing the older version that was actually known to work.

Preserve only lawfully acquired files and follow the game’s licence and the law in your jurisdiction. A backup protects your data; it does not grant permission to redistribute the game or bypass an activation mechanism.
Keep archives private unless you have clear permission to share them. Do not remove or defeat copy protection merely to make a backup work. If the title is DRM-free, that describes its distribution policy, not a general licence to upload or distribute the installer.
What is the practical preservation checklist?
Use this checklist before declaring a title archived:
- Exact edition, language, region and patch level recorded.
- Base installer or complete supported storefront backup collected.
- Every DLC, language pack and required extra stored with the set.
- Saves, configuration, mods and screenshots copied from their actual locations.
- Runtimes, product keys, launcher requirements and compatibility settings documented.
- Clean original archive separated from any modified working copy.
- Hashes recorded and checked after copying.
- At least two copies stored on separate media.
- Restore completed in a separate directory or spare computer with the network disconnected.
- Game launched, saved, quit and relaunched; one preserved save and installed DLC verified.
- Online-only and account-dependent features clearly identified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I preserve a game that has already been delisted?
If you legally downloaded the installer, backup set or required files while they were available, you can preserve that historical version and test it offline. Delisting does not restore missing activation servers, multiplayer services or other account-dependent features, so document those limits with the archive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I keep both the installer and the installed game folder?
Yes. The installer or storefront backup is the reproducible source, while the installed folder records the exact unpacked version and may contain generated files that help diagnose a future restore. Keep the folder as a separate snapshot rather than substituting it for the installer.
How can I tell whether a Steam title is safe to archive with Backup game files?
Check whether the title uses a third-party installer, downloader or external launcher, then perform the disconnected restore test. Steam’s backup feature excludes some such games, and Offline Mode is not reliable for titles that require an active connection.
What should I write in the archive’s read-me file?
List the edition, language, patch and DLC, installer order, save locations, runtime packages, keys, launch settings, hash-file name, test date and every feature that failed without a network connection. This turns a pile of files into instructions another person can follow without guessing.
