Back up Nintendo saves before the original console fails. Nintendo’s official methods are platform-specific: 3DS downloadable-game saves can be copied to the console’s SD card, Wii saves can sometimes be moved to an SD card or transferred to Wii U, Wii U data can be copied to Wii U-formatted USB storage or moved to another Wii U, and compatible Switch saves can use Nintendo Switch Online cloud storage. Most console-to-console transfers require both systems to be working, so a backup made after a hardware failure may not be possible.
Use the instructions below while each source system still boots. Keep the original console until you have opened the game and verified the destination copy; removable media and cloud storage are safeguards, not proof that every title is portable.

Choose the preservation method before you touch the data
The right method depends on four questions: which console holds the save, whether the game is downloaded or cartridge-based, where you want the copy to live, and whether the source console still operates. A replacement transfer is different from an independent backup: a transfer may overwrite the destination or format the source, while an SD, USB or cloud copy can give you a separate fallback.
| Platform | Official destination | What is covered | Critical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS family | SD card through Save-Data Backup; system transfer for a replacement 3DS | Eligible downloadable Nintendo 3DS software and most Virtual Console games | Retail 3DS cartridge saves, DSiWare and Game Boy Advance software are excluded from Save-Data Backup; maximum 30 backups |
| Wii | Compatible SD card, or Wii-to-Wii U transfer | Title-dependent Wii save data; transfer also supports WiiWare, Virtual Console saves, add-on content and Mii data | Developers can block SD copying or allow only partial data; Wii mini has no SD support; SD-resident saves must return to Wii memory before a Wii-to-Wii U transfer |
| Wii U | Wii U-formatted USB storage, or Wii U-to-Wii U System Transfer | Save data copied through Data Management; transfer moves supported system content | System Transfer replaces the target’s content and formats the source when it finishes |
| Nintendo Switch | Save Data Cloud for compatible titles, or built-in user/save transfer between Switch consoles | Compatible Switch software, with Nintendo Switch Online for cloud storage | There is no general local save-backup feature; Wii U and 3DS saves are not covered, and compatibility is title-specific |
Prepare a safe backup workflow
- Update and power-test the source. Start each game, load the latest progress and confirm that the console reads its storage. If the system is unstable, make the least destructive copy first and avoid repeated shutdowns.
- Identify the save’s location and type. A downloaded title, a cartridge, a WiiWare purchase and a Virtual Console release can follow different rules even on the same hardware.
- Use media the console itself has formatted or accepted. A card or USB drive that merely works on a computer is not automatically a valid Nintendo backup target.
- Make the copy, then test it. Do not erase the source immediately. On the destination, launch the relevant software, load the save and check a distinctive item, level or timestamp.
- Keep two separated copies when the save matters. Store one removable card or drive away from the console and protect it from accidental formatting. Cloud storage is an additional layer, not a substitute for checking title support.
How to back up Nintendo 3DS save data
What Save-Data Backup includes
Nintendo’s 3DS Save-Data Backup feature stores backups on the SD card inserted in the system. It supports downloadable Nintendo 3DS software and most Virtual Console games. It does not back up saves for retail Nintendo 3DS software on a cartridge, DSiWare or Game Boy Advance software. The system allows up to 30 Save-Data Backup entries, so the feature is not an unlimited archive.

Make an SD-card backup
The system must be running menu version 6.0.0-0U or later. Perform the operation for each eligible title whose progress you want to preserve:
- Insert the SD card that will remain associated with the 3DS backup.
- Highlight the downloaded or Virtual Console software on the HOME Menu.
- Open the software’s HOME Menu options and choose Save-Data Backup.
- Confirm the operation and wait for the console to report completion before removing the card or powering down.
- Repeat for other eligible titles, staying within the 30-backup limit.
Save-Data Backup is title-level protection, not a complete image of every 3DS game. A retail cartridge save remains on the cartridge and the excluded DSiWare and Game Boy Advance categories require a different preservation plan; do not assume that copying the SD card will capture them.
Replacing a 3DS with another 3DS
For a full 3DS-family replacement, use Nintendo’s system-transfer route while both systems are operational. Copy any files you need from the target system’s SD card first: Nintendo states that data on the target SD card is not usable after the transfer. Keep both systems powered and follow the on-screen transfer sequence rather than deleting the source data manually.

After creating a backup, leave the original 3DS intact. Retain the card in a labeled, protected location and record which titles were backed up. If you later restore or transfer, open each important game and inspect an unmistakable piece of progress instead of relying only on a completed menu message.

How to copy Wii saves to an SD card
Use the Wii Data Management path
For a standard Wii with SD support, use Nintendo’s built-in management screen:
- Insert a compatible SD card.
- From the Wii Menu, open Wii Options, then Data Management, then Save Data, and choose Wii.
- Select the game save you want to move.
- Choose the SD-card action shown by the console and confirm.
- Leave the original in Wii system memory when the menu offers a copy option and you still need a fallback; choose move only when you deliberately want it removed from the source.
Why an SD copy may not be complete
Wii SD handling is controlled by each game’s software. A developer may block transfers entirely, or a game may move only part of its data. An SD card therefore cannot be treated as a universal Wii archive. Wii mini has no SD-card support, so these menu steps do not apply to that model. For an important title, test the copied save on the intended destination before considering the source disposable.
Transfer Wii data to Wii U
Requirements and preparation
The official Wii-to-Wii U transfer needs both consoles, internet access, a working Nintendo Network ID on the target Wii U, and an SD or SDHC card with at least 512 MB of free space. The source Wii must be able to run the transfer software. Before starting, move every save that currently resides on the Wii’s SD card back into Wii system memory: Nintendo states that SD-resident saves cannot be transferred directly.

- On the source Wii, use Data Management to return relevant saves from the SD card to system memory.
- Prepare the required SD or SDHC card with at least 512 MB free and connect both consoles to the internet.
- Start Nintendo’s Wii-to-Wii U transfer procedure on the Wii U and follow the prompts on both systems.
- Allow the process to copy the supported Wii software saves, WiiWare and Virtual Console saves, add-on content and Mii data.
- Do not interrupt power or remove the card until both systems indicate completion.
- Launch representative games on the Wii U’s Wii environment and check the transferred progress before changing or deleting the source system.
What does not move
Nintendo lists exclusions, including Nintendo GameCube disc saves and other unsupported data. A successful transfer message therefore does not mean that every file associated with the Wii moved. Preserve excluded or title-blocked data separately where the software permits, and keep the original Wii until the games you care about have been checked.

Preserve Wii U save data
Copy saves to Wii U-formatted USB storage
A Wii U can copy save data through Data Management to a USB storage device that the console has formatted for Wii U use. The formatting step is destructive to existing content on that drive, so use a device you are prepared to dedicate to the console and let the Wii U perform the format rather than preparing it on a computer.
- Connect the USB storage device to the Wii U.
- When prompted, format it for Wii U use; confirm only after checking that no needed files remain on the device.
- Open System Settings, then Data Management, and choose the save-data management option.
- Select the game and copy its save data to the Wii U-formatted USB device.
- Wait for the copy to finish and leave the original save on the console until the USB copy has been tested.
A later Wii U system update adds dates to save-data copies. When several copies are listed, select the newest dated copy; choosing an older entry can overwrite newer progress.
Move to a replacement Wii U
Use Wii U-to-Wii U System Transfer when replacing the console. Both Wii U systems and a working GamePad are required, along with an SD card large enough for the system and save data. The operation is not a merge: content on the source replaces the target’s content, and Nintendo formats the source Wii U after the transfer completes.
- On the target, complete the initial setup far enough to start the transfer and associate the required account information.
- Insert an SD card with sufficient free capacity and follow the System Transfer instructions shown on both Wii U consoles.
- Keep both consoles, the GamePad and their power connections undisturbed while the transfer runs.
- After completion, open several transferred games and inspect their saves before reorganizing storage.
- If you used a USB device synchronized with the source Wii U, connect that device to the target after the transfer; Nintendo says its data remains available there.
Because the target is replaced rather than combined and the source is formatted, copy any target-only data you need before beginning. Treat the transfer as a one-way migration, not a reversible backup.

What Nintendo Switch can and cannot preserve
Save Data Cloud
Save Data Cloud is available for compatible Nintendo Switch software and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo describes support as covering the vast majority of Switch games, but support remains title-specific; check the individual software’s compatibility before relying on the cloud copy.
If the membership expires, cloud backups become inaccessible until you resubscribe. Nintendo says previously stored backups can be accessed again when you resubscribe within 180 days. Keep the membership status and the game’s cloud-support status in your preservation notes.
Switch-to-Switch transfer
When both Switch consoles are available, use the built-in user and save-data transfer. Keep the source console until the destination has opened the game and displayed the expected progress. This moves saves between Switch systems; it does not create a general-purpose file that can be browsed or restored on a computer.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Important platform boundary
Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud does not back up Wii U or Nintendo 3DS saves. Nintendo also does not provide a general local save-data backup feature on Switch, so an SD card cannot be used as a universal manual save archive. A Switch service subscription therefore cannot rescue an unpreserved Wii U or 3DS save.

Storefront closures and what they mean for preservation
Discontinued purchasing and discontinued online communication are separate events. Nintendo ended Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases and free downloads on March 27, 2023. Online play and other online-communication functionality for Wii U and 3DS software ended on April 8, 2024. Nintendo says redownloads and software updates remain available for the foreseeable future, but that continuing access is not the same as a save backup.
The Wii Shop Channel discontinuation page identifies an early-2019 closure and related service shutdown plans, dated January 30, 2019. Any preservation plan should therefore prioritize data already installed on a working console and copies made through the platform’s supported storage or transfer tools.
Verification and failure-prevention checklist
- Record the source: note the console model, game edition, cartridge or download status, and the date of the copy.
- Check the destination independently: launch the game, load the save and inspect a known character, inventory item, level or completion marker.
- Protect against overwrite: on Wii U, choose the newest dated copy; during system transfers, remember that target content can be replaced.
- Do not format early: retain the source 3DS, Wii or Wii U until verification is complete, especially when a transfer formats the source.
- Label removable media: identify the console and titles associated with each SD card or USB device, and keep the media away from heat, moisture and accidental reformatting.
- Separate unsupported cases: retail 3DS cartridges, DSiWare, Game Boy Advance software, Wii titles that block or partially allow copying, GameCube disc saves and unsupported Switch titles need their own documented strategy.
- Plan for a dead console realistically: official transfer tools generally require the original system to boot. No currently verified official method in this guidance promises recovery from a non-booting Wii, Wii U or 3DS, so preserving before failure is the decisive step.
A practical decision path
- If the data is on a 3DS download or most Virtual Console titles, use Save-Data Backup to the inserted SD card, then verify the backup.
- If it is on a retail 3DS cartridge, do not expect Save-Data Backup to include it; keep the cartridge and original system together and investigate the specific title’s supported transfer path.
- If it is on Wii, try the Data Management SD route only after checking that the title allows a complete transfer. For a Wii U replacement, return SD-resident saves to Wii memory before starting the official transfer.
- If it is on Wii U, make a dated copy to Wii U-formatted USB storage for an independent backup, or use System Transfer when moving to another console and accept its replacement and source-formatting behavior.
- If it is on Switch, check cloud compatibility and Nintendo Switch Online status, or use the built-in transfer while both consoles work; neither option covers Wii U or 3DS data.
The safest preservation plan is layered: create the platform-supported copy, verify it on the intended destination, and keep the original hardware and media until the verification succeeds.
