On Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Other devices and switch off Communicate with unpaired devices. This stops supported Windows apps from using the unpaired-wireless-device capability. It does not turn off Bluetooth, remove existing pairings, or guarantee that every app can no longer discover a nearby device.
On managed PCs, administrators can enforce the same restriction with the App Privacy policy set to Force Deny, or with the LetAppsSyncWithDevices registry value set to 2. Apps that were open when a policy changed may need to be restarted.

What does “Communicate with unpaired devices” mean in Windows?
Microsoft defines this control as determining whether Windows apps can communicate with unpaired wireless devices. The Windows privacy description says apps may otherwise “automatically share and sync info with wireless devices that don’t explicitly pair with your PC, tablet, or phone.”
An unpaired device has no explicit pairing relationship with the computer. The setting therefore governs a particular app capability, not every radio or every route an application could use. A supported app might use it to discover, communicate with, or synchronize data with a nearby wireless device without first completing normal pairing.

That distinction matters for troubleshooting. Existing Bluetooth pairings are separate relationships, and disabling this control does not generally disconnect paired Bluetooth hardware. An app could also use a network protocol, a browser connection, a driver, a trusted-device relationship, or its own service instead of the Windows capability.
How do I stop apps from connecting to unpaired devices on one PC?
Use the Other devices privacy page. The change applies to the Windows user experience on that PC and can be reversed from the same location unless an organization policy controls it.

- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Other devices.
- Turn Communicate with unpaired devices off.
Close and reopen any app that was using nearby-device features so it requests the capability again under the new setting. If the device is managed, the switch may be unavailable or may return to an administrator-selected state.
Where is the Other devices privacy setting in Windows 11?
The current path is Settings > Privacy & security > Other devices. The control is labeled Communicate with unpaired devices; on some builds, languages, or editions, wording and page availability can differ.
If you cannot find the switch
- Confirm that you opened Other devices, not a similarly named Bluetooth or device-permissions page.
- Install the latest approved Windows updates for your organization or edition, then check the page again.
- Check whether a local or organizational policy is hiding, disabling, or enforcing the control.
- Remember that policy-managed settings can appear locked even when you have local administrator rights.
A missing switch does not prove that wireless communication is impossible. It may simply mean the setting is being administered elsewhere or is not exposed by that Windows build.
How do I block unpaired-device communication with Group Policy?
On editions that include Local Group Policy, administrators can set the App Privacy policy to deny the capability for all apps by default. Microsoft documents this policy for Windows 10 version 1607 and later on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions.

- Press
Windows + R, entergpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > App Privacy.
- Open Let Windows apps communicate with unpaired devices.
- Enable the policy.
- Set the default behavior to Force Deny, then apply the change.
Force Deny makes the administrative choice authoritative rather than leaving each user in control. If an affected app was already open, restart that app. Restarting Windows is another supported way to ensure the new policy is picked up.
What the policy can control
The policy supports a default for apps and a per-app list. A per-app entry is identified by the app’s Package Family Name and overrides the default. This lets an administrator deny the capability broadly while making a deliberate exception, or apply a different rule to a specific packaged app.
How do I find an app’s Package Family Name?
Use Windows PowerShell to display installed app packages and their identifiers. A typical query is:
Get-AppPackage | Select Name, PackageFamilyName
Find the application in the output and copy its exact PackageFamilyName into the policy’s per-app list. Package Family Names are identifiers, not the friendly names users see in the Start menu, so check the spelling carefully. A mismatch means the exception will not target the intended package.
Per-app targeting is useful when nearby-device access is required for one approved workflow but should be denied for other Windows apps. It does not automatically control a traditional desktop program that communicates through its own driver or service rather than the Windows app capability.
What registry value disables LetAppsSyncWithDevices?
The administrative registry equivalent is a REG_DWORD under:

Create or edit the value named LetAppsSyncWithDevices. Microsoft documents these values:
| Value | Behavior | Administrative meaning |
|---|---|---|
0 |
User in control | Default behavior; the user setting determines access. |
1 |
Force allow | Allows the capability regardless of the user switch. |
2 |
Force deny | Most restrictive setting; blocks the capability for supported Windows apps. |
To block unpaired-device communication through the registry, set LetAppsSyncWithDevices to 2. A registry edit changes configuration; it does not disable a Bluetooth chip or repair a faulty wireless driver.
Use the registry carefully
- Back up the registry before making a policy change.
- Use the computer-level path exactly; a value in another hive will not implement this policy.
- Prefer Group Policy or your organization’s device-management system when a fleet must remain consistent.
- After changing the value, restart affected apps; restart Windows if the new behavior is not immediately visible.
Will turning this setting off disable Bluetooth?
No. The control is not a master Bluetooth switch. It targets communication by supported Windows apps with wireless devices that are not paired.
Normal Bluetooth pairing remains a separate relationship. A paired keyboard, headset, controller, or other accessory can continue to work unless another setting, driver, hardware fault, or application permission affects it. Turning off the unpaired-device capability also does not promise to stop every kind of casting or discovery.
Why a nearby device might still appear
- The device may already be paired with Windows.
- The app may be discovering it over the local network instead of through the unpaired-device capability.
- A browser, driver, trusted-device mechanism, or vendor service may be handling the connection.
- The app may be using a capability that this privacy switch does not govern.
If your goal is to make the computer undiscoverable over Bluetooth altogether, use the appropriate Bluetooth controls or hardware policy instead; this privacy setting is narrower.
What does disabling the capability block, and what does it leave available?
For apps that rely on this Windows capability, denying access can stop unpaired-device discovery, communication, or synchronization. The exact effect depends on how the app was built and which connection method it uses.

| Scenario | Likely effect of turning the setting off |
|---|---|
| Packaged Windows app using the unpaired-device capability | Its access through that channel is denied. |
| Already paired Bluetooth accessory | Pairing is normally preserved; this switch does not generally disconnect it. |
| Network casting or synchronization | May continue if the app uses Wi-Fi or another network protocol. |
| Browser-based device feature | May continue under the browser’s own permission and connection model. |
| Driver or vendor background service | May be unaffected if it does not use the Windows app capability. |
Consequently, a successful privacy change can coexist with a device that remains visible or usable through another path.
Which method should a home user or administrator choose?
Use the Settings switch for a single PC when users should be able to change the choice. Use Group Policy or the registry when an administrator must enforce it across accounts or devices.
| Method | Scope | Can the user change it? | Deployment | Compatibility consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settings switch | Local Windows privacy control | Usually yes, unless policy-managed | Interactive Settings app | May stop supported nearby-device features that need unpaired access. |
| Group Policy, Force Deny | Computer-wide default, with optional per-app targeting | No for the enforced rule | Local Group Policy on supported editions | Exceptions require accurate Package Family Names. |
Registry, value 2 |
Computer-wide policy value | No while the policy value is enforced | Administrative registry configuration | Requires careful change control and app restarts. |
For a managed environment, document which apps need nearby-device access before selecting Force Deny. A broad denial can be appropriate for privacy, but it can also break an approved workflow that depends on unpaired discovery.
What should I do if a feature stops working?
First determine whether the feature actually depends on the blocked capability. Then test the connection in a controlled order rather than immediately changing several privacy and Bluetooth settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Temporarily turn Communicate with unpaired devices back on, or have an administrator change the policy, and retry the feature.
- Restart the affected app. If it still has stale permissions or policy state, restart Windows.
- Verify that the wireless device is powered on and discoverable according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check the app’s own permissions and confirm that the relevant wireless driver is present and functioning.
- If the workflow supports it, pair the device explicitly and test again.
- If the feature works only after pairing, it likely depended on unpaired discovery or synchronization.
When re-enabling the setting restores the feature, decide whether to leave it enabled, create a narrow per-app exception, or use an explicit pairing workflow. If re-enabling has no effect, investigate the app, network path, driver, or hardware separately because this switch may not be involved.

If Group Policy or the registry enforces denial, changing the user switch will not override it. An administrator must remove or change the policy, or change LetAppsSyncWithDevices from 2 to the organization’s approved value. Do not overwrite a managed setting without confirming the device owner’s policy.
What is the practical privacy trade-off?
Turning the capability off reduces one route by which supported Windows apps can interact with nearby wireless devices before explicit pairing. That can be useful on shared, public, or tightly managed PCs where unrequested synchronization is undesirable.
Recommended Free Tools
The trade-off is compatibility: applications designed around quick nearby-device discovery may lose a feature until the setting is restored, an exception is granted, or the device is paired. Because the switch is not a universal radio control, it should be combined with Bluetooth, network, browser, and driver controls when a complete isolation requirement exists.
Bottom line: use the narrow control for the narrow problem
For a personal Windows PC, turn off Communicate with unpaired devices under Privacy & security > Other devices. For managed computers, enforce denial with the App Privacy policy’s Force Deny option or the LetAppsSyncWithDevices value 2, then restart affected apps. Keep expectations precise: this blocks a Windows app capability for unpaired wireless devices, not Bluetooth itself and not every possible discovery or connection method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this setting affect Wi-Fi devices on my home network?
Not necessarily. The control concerns the Windows app capability for unpaired wireless devices; an app that uses a network protocol can continue communicating over Wi-Fi unless a separate network or app rule blocks it.
Can a standard desktop program ignore this privacy setting?
It may be unaffected if it uses its own service, driver, browser interface, or another connection stack instead of the Windows app capability. The switch is designed for supported Windows apps, so test the specific application path.
Why does Windows still show a device after I deny access?
Visibility and communication are different. The device may be paired already, discovered through the network, or exposed by a driver or service that the privacy control does not govern.
What happens if an administrator sets both a default and a per-app policy?
The per-app setting identified by Package Family Name takes precedence for that package. Other apps continue to follow the configured default.
