To keep a browsing session out of your normal browser record, use New Incognito window in Chrome or New InPrivate window in Microsoft Edge, then close every private window when you finish. To remove information already saved in a regular profile, use Delete browsing data in Chrome or Clear browsing data in Edge and choose the categories and time range.
These controls limit what remains on the device. They do not make you anonymous: websites, a signed-in account, an employer or school network, an internet provider, and monitoring software may still observe activity. Downloads, bookmarks or favorites, cloud-account activity, and network logs are separate records that need separate treatment.

What is the fastest way to stop Chrome or Edge saving a session?
Use the browser’s private mode for any activity that should not be added to the normal profile. Private mode is session-based, so the cleanup happens only after every window of that private session is closed.
Chrome: start and end an Incognito session
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select New Incognito window. On Windows and Linux, the usual shortcut is
Ctrl+Shift+N; shortcuts can differ on other operating systems. - Use only Incognito windows for the activity you want excluded from normal history. Opening a regular window alongside Incognito does not turn that regular window into a private session.
- When finished, close all Incognito windows. Chrome states that, after the session ends, it does not save browsing history, cookies and site data, or information entered in forms on the device.
Incognito does not erase records that were created earlier in the normal Chrome profile. Those require the separate deletion workflow below.

Edge: start and end an InPrivate session
- Open Edge’s Settings and more menu and choose New InPrivate window. Microsoft also documents opening InPrivate from a link or the taskbar.
- Keep the browsing that should remain out of the normal profile inside InPrivate windows.
- Close every InPrivate window. Edge says this removes browsing history, download history, cookies and other site data, cached images and files, passwords, autofill form data, site permissions, and hosted-app data associated with that InPrivate session.
InPrivate does not save new passwords, addresses, or form entries. Downloads and favorites can still be retained, so closing InPrivate is not a guarantee that every artifact created during the session disappears.
What does Incognito or InPrivate actually hide?
Private browsing primarily controls local browser storage. It is useful when another person may inspect the same device, but it is not an anonymity or anti-monitoring service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Local history: The private session is not added to the normal History page after all private windows close.
- Cookies and site data: Session data created in private mode is discarded when the session ends, subject to the browser’s documented behavior.
- Forms and autofill: Chrome does not retain information entered in forms for the Incognito session; Edge does not retain new passwords, addresses, or form entries in InPrivate.
- Websites: A site can still collect information about the visit. Signing in identifies you to that site even when the browser window is private.
- Networks: An employer, school, internet provider, or parental-monitoring system may still observe connections or activity.
- Files and account records: Downloads, favorites or bookmarks, and activity stored by a cloud account are separate from the local history list.
Think of private mode as “do not keep this session in this browser profile,” not “make this connection invisible.”
How do I delete history and browsing data already saved in Chrome?
Chrome’s Delete browsing data screen removes selected records from a chosen period. It is the correct method for normal-profile data that already exists, and it does not by itself prevent future saving in ordinary windows.
- Open Chrome’s menu and select Delete browsing data.
- Choose a time range. Select All time if the intention is to remove the entire available period rather than only recent activity.
- Select each category required: browsing history, cookies and other site data, cached images and files, download history, autofill form data, site settings, or hosted-app data.
- Select Delete data and wait for the confirmation before closing the settings page.
Chrome documents that deleting history removes URLs from the History page, New Tab shortcuts, and address-bar predictions. Deleting download history removes the browser’s download-list entries; it does not automatically delete the downloaded files themselves, so inspect the operating system’s Downloads folder separately.

What happens when Chrome Sync is enabled?
When you are signed in with Chrome sync, deleting browser data can extend to other signed-in devices and the Google Account. Check the sync state before selecting a broad time range if you intend to clean only one computer.
Google Search history and other activity recorded by Google services are separate from Chrome’s local browser history. Manage those records through the relevant Google Account controls rather than assuming Delete browsing data covers them.
How do I clear history and browsing data already saved in Edge?
Edge’s Clear browsing data workflow lets you choose both a time range and the data types to remove. Like Chrome’s deletion screen, it cleans existing records but does not impose a permanent no-history rule on normal windows.
- Select Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear next to Clear browsing data now.
- Choose the required time range.
- Select the categories to remove, such as browsing history, download history, cookies and site data, cached images and files, passwords, autofill form data, or site permissions.
- Select Clear now.
How can I limit Edge deletion to one device?
Turn sync off before clearing if the goal is to affect only the current device. With sync enabled, Microsoft says synced items can be cleared across synced devices.
Data held in the Microsoft cloud is managed separately through the Microsoft privacy dashboard. An action in that dashboard is not the same as deleting the corresponding data from the browser on the device, so handle local and cloud records as two different tasks.

Which option should I use for my situation?
| Choice | Best for | What it changes locally | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Incognito | One-off private sessions | Discards history, cookies and site data, and form entries when all Incognito windows close | Websites, networks, and signed-in sites can still identify or observe activity |
| Chrome Delete browsing data | Removing an existing record | Deletes selected categories for a chosen time range; sync can extend deletion to other devices | Does not by itself stop future saving in normal mode |
| Edge InPrivate | One-off private sessions | Deletes listed history, cookies, cache, passwords, autofill, and permissions when all InPrivate windows close | Does not hide activity from websites, schools, employers, or internet providers; downloads and favorites may remain |
| Edge Clear browsing data | Removing an existing record | Deletes selected categories for a chosen time range; sync scope matters | Does not by itself enforce future no-history behavior |
| Edge SavingBrowserHistoryDisabled | Organization-wide no-history rule | Prevents history saving and disables tab sync | Requires administrator policy management; supported platforms and versions vary |
| Edge ClearBrowsingDataOnExit | Organization-wide cleanup at close | Deletes all browsing data when Edge closes, with documented cookie and password exceptions | Windows and macOS policy; not supported on Android or iOS |
Can Edge be configured to never save history in a managed organization?
Yes. Administrators can enable the SavingBrowserHistoryDisabled policy. Microsoft documents that it disables history saving, prevents users from changing the setting, and disables tab syncing.
Supported Edge versions and platforms
The policy is listed for Windows and macOS version 77 or later, Android 140 or later, and iOS 84 or later. Support is tied to the Edge release and management channel, so verify the current Microsoft Learn policy entry before deployment.
Windows policy value
On Windows, the documented registry location is:
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeSavingBrowserHistoryDisabled
Set the DWORD value to 1 through the organization’s approved policy-management method. Administrators should confirm the current deployment syntax and precedence rules in Microsoft Learn; a manually edited registry value can be overwritten by centralized management.
This is an administrator control, not a personal browser toggle. If the policy is active, the user cannot restore history saving from Edge’s ordinary settings, and tab synchronization is disabled as part of the policy behavior.

Yes. The ClearBrowsingDataOnExit policy directs Edge to delete all browsing data each time the browser closes. Microsoft documents support on Windows and macOS from version 78; Android and iOS are not supported for this policy.

Handling necessary exceptions
An administrator can use SaveCookiesOnExit when selected cookies must survive a close. PasswordDeleteOnBrowserCloseEnabled can be used when the organization needs to preserve passwords instead of deleting them at browser close. Those exceptions change what “all browsing data” means for the managed configuration, so document them for users and auditors.
Automatic clearing occurs at browser close, not merely when a tab is closed. A crashed process, forced shutdown, or device-level interruption may produce behavior different from a clean exit, so organizations should test their recovery and sign-in procedures.
How should I clean a device without accidentally deleting more than intended?
Use a deliberate sequence rather than selecting every box automatically. The right categories depend on whether you are removing a privacy trace, fixing a site problem, or preparing a shared device for another person.
For a one-time private visit
- Start a new Incognito or InPrivate window before opening the site.
- Do not enter the activity in a normal window or switch profiles mid-task.
- Close all private windows when finished.
- Check the Downloads folder and any files you intentionally saved; private mode does not make those files vanish.
For an existing history record
- Decide whether the deletion should affect one device or synced devices.
- Choose a time range that matches the record you want removed.
- Select only the categories needed. For example, removing cookies can sign you out of sites, while removing cached files may make the next page load slower as content is downloaded again.
- Delete or clear the browser data, then inspect the browser’s history and download list.
- If the concern is account activity, open the relevant Google or Microsoft account privacy controls separately.
For a shared or managed computer
Ask the administrator whether a policy controls history, sync, cookies, or passwords. A local user-level cleanup may be reversed by policy, and a policy change can affect every profile using the managed browser.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can a website still know what I did in private mode?
Private mode changes the browser’s local retention behavior; it does not remove the server-side part of a web visit. The website receives a connection and can associate activity with an account when you sign in. Network operators may also retain their own connection records, independent of what appears in the browser’s History page.

- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
For that reason, private browsing is appropriate for reducing local traces on a shared device, not for bypassing workplace or school monitoring, concealing traffic from an internet provider, or separating activity from an account to which you deliberately sign in.
What commonly goes wrong, and how do I fix it?
- History still appears after using private mode: Confirm that the page was opened in an Incognito or InPrivate window, then close every private window. A normal-window visit is not converted retroactively.
- Only one private window was closed: Keep closing private windows until none remain; the session cleanup is tied to closing the complete private window set.
- Old history remains: Private mode does not remove normal-profile records. Run Chrome’s Delete browsing data or Edge’s Clear browsing data workflow.
- Other devices lost data too: Sync may have expanded the deletion scope. Review Chrome or Edge sync settings before the next cleanup, and turn sync off first when a device-only result is required.
- A downloaded file is still present: Clear the browser’s download history and delete the file from the operating system separately if it should not remain.
- A site asks for a password again: Clearing cookies, site data, or saved passwords can end sessions and remove credentials. Sign in again only after confirming that retaining those credentials is acceptable.
- Edge settings cannot be changed: A managed policy such as SavingBrowserHistoryDisabled may be enforcing the behavior. Contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing local settings.
What records remain outside browser history?
Deleting a History entry addresses the browser’s local record, not every place where information can exist. Check each category separately when the goal is a thorough cleanup:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Downloaded files: The file itself remains in the operating system until removed.
- Favorites or bookmarks: These are saved navigation items rather than history entries.
- Cloud account activity: Search, account, and service activity may be stored outside the browser and has its own controls.
- Synced browser data: A deletion can propagate to other signed-in devices depending on sync settings.
- Network-side logs: Schools, employers, providers, and monitoring tools may retain observations that the browser cannot delete.
Use private windows for future local privacy, the clear-data screens for records already present, and administrator policies when an organization needs a consistent rule across managed devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does closing one Incognito or InPrivate tab delete the session?
No. The documented cleanup occurs after all Incognito or InPrivate windows are closed. Leaving another private window open can keep that private session active.
Will clearing cookies delete my saved browser passwords?
Only if you select the password category or an administrator policy is configured to remove passwords. Review the selected data types before confirming, especially on a shared or managed computer.
Can private browsing stop my employer from seeing the websites I visit?
No. Private modes limit local browser storage, while workplace, school, provider, and monitoring systems can observe activity independently. Use your organization’s privacy policy to understand what network monitoring applies.
Why did clearing Edge data affect another computer?
Edge sync can propagate deletion of synced items across signed-in devices. Turn sync off before clearing when the intended scope is only the current device.
