To prevent browser-data imports on managed Windows or macOS devices, apply Microsoft Edge policies in layers. Set AutoImportAtFirstRun to DisabledAutoImport (4) to remove the import section from first run, disable ImportOnEachLaunch to stop recurring Chrome-import prompts, and disable the individual Import* policies for data that must be blocked. Use mandatory policies rather than recommended policies when users must not override the setting.
In Windows Group Policy, the controls are under Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge. Registry-based deployments use SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Restart Edge after changing ImportOnEachLaunch, because Microsoft documents that policy as requiring a restart and not supporting dynamic refresh.

Which Edge policies prevent browser-data imports?
No single switch covers every import route. First-run automation, prompts shown on later launches, and manual import categories are controlled separately. A strict configuration combines the first-run and launch controls with the datatype policies that match your security requirement.
| Policy | What disabling it does | Supported versions and implementation notes |
|---|---|---|
AutoImportAtFirstRun |
Set the value to DisabledAutoImport (4). The import section of the first-run experience is skipped, and Edge does not automatically import browser data or settings. | Windows and macOS, Edge 77 and later. Mandatory ADMX policy; registry value is a REG_DWORD named AutoImportAtFirstRun. |
ImportOnEachLaunch |
Stops Edge from prompting users to import browsing data from Chrome every time Edge starts. | Windows, Edge 104 and later. Set to disabled or 0; restart Edge because the policy has no dynamic refresh. Microsoft documents this control as applying to Microsoft-account profiles but not Microsoft Entra ID profiles, and as not being per-profile. |
ImportHistory |
Blocks browsing-history import during first run and through the manual import workflow. | Windows and macOS, Edge 77 and later. Microsoft lists mappings for Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari. |
ImportFavorites |
Blocks favorites or bookmarks import during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 77 and later. |
ImportSavedPasswords |
Blocks saved-password import during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 77 and later. |
ImportCookies |
Blocks cookie import during first run. | Windows and macOS, Edge 81 and later. The current policy description specifically addresses Chrome import; it does not provide the same manual-import coverage statement as the other datatype controls. |
ImportPaymentInfo |
Blocks payment-information import during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 77 and later. The current policy description refers to Chrome import. |
ImportOpenTabs |
Blocks import of open and pinned tabs during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 79 and later. The current policy description refers to Chrome import. |
ImportBrowserSettings |
Blocks browser-settings import during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 78 and later. The current policy description refers to Chrome import. |
ImportAutofillFormData |
Blocks autofill-form-data import during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 77 and later. Microsoft documents Chrome and Firefox coverage. |
ImportExtensions |
Blocks extension import during first run and manual import. | Windows and macOS, Edge 81 and later. The current policy description refers to Chrome import. |
Datatype settings are generally available as mandatory policies under SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Many also have a recommended-policy location under SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeRecommended. Recommended settings can be changed by the user, so they are unsuitable when the requirement is prevention rather than a default preference.

How do I configure the controls in Windows Group Policy?
Use the Microsoft Edge administrative templates, then verify the effective policy on a managed test device before broad deployment.
- Install the Edge ADMX templates. Add the current Microsoft Edge policy templates to your central store or local Group Policy installation so that Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge contains the import settings.
- Disable automatic first-run import. Open the
AutoImportAtFirstRunpolicy, set it to Enabled, and choose DisabledAutoImport (4) as the configured value. This value means Edge skips the import portion of first run instead of merely declining a particular source. - Disable repeated launch prompts. Configure
ImportOnEachLaunchas disabled. On Windows deployments that expose a numeric setting, use0. Close and restart Edge after the policy is applied. - Choose the data categories to block. Set each relevant
Import*policy to disabled. A credentials-only requirement normally includesImportSavedPasswords; a broader data-loss-prevention baseline may also include history, favorites, cookies, payment information, open tabs, settings, autofill data and extensions. - Make the settings mandatory. Deploy them through the mandatory policy branch, not only the recommended branch. This prevents a user from changing the setting in Edge.
- Replicate the configuration on macOS where required. Most datatype policies support Windows and macOS, but the exact management mechanism differs. Confirm that the policy version installed on the Mac supports the Edge release in use.
The registry equivalent for Windows is the mandatory path SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Each policy uses its documented registry value name, such as AutoImportAtFirstRun, ImportOnEachLaunch or ImportSavedPasswords. Use the policy templates rather than hand-editing values when possible, because the templates expose the accepted data type and value.
How do I block only passwords, cookies or another specific category?
Use the datatype policies individually when a complete ban would interfere with an approved migration. For example, disabling ImportSavedPasswords blocks saved-password imports while leaving you free to decide separately whether favorites or history may move into Edge.
Credentials and financial data
Disable ImportSavedPasswords for stored credentials and ImportPaymentInfo for payment information. These controls address first-run and manual import according to their policy descriptions. Treat cookies separately: ImportCookies blocks cookie import at first run, while the current policy documentation does not describe the same manual-import scope.

History, favorites and open work
Use ImportHistory for browsing history, ImportFavorites for bookmarks, and ImportOpenTabs for open or pinned tabs. These controls are useful when an organization permits a limited migration but does not want a complete copy of a user’s previous browser profile.
Settings, autofill and extensions
ImportBrowserSettings blocks browser preferences, ImportAutofillFormData blocks saved form entries, and ImportExtensions blocks extension migration. Extension blocking is especially important when the organization has a separate allow-list or software-deployment process for Edge add-ons.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can users still import data manually after automatic import is disabled?
Yes, unless the relevant datatype policies are also disabled. Microsoft Support documents the user-facing route as Settings > Profiles > Import browser data. From there, Edge can import from Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, import favorites from an HTML file, and import passwords from a CSV file.
That is why AutoImportAtFirstRun alone is not a complete prevention strategy. It removes the first-run import section, but it does not by itself close every manual path. Pair it with ImportOnEachLaunch and the category policies that correspond to the data your organization must keep out of Edge.

What can Edge import from Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari?
The available categories depend on the source browser and operating system. Microsoft’s first-run documentation describes the following coverage:
- Chrome: favorites, saved passwords, addresses, payment information, browsing history, settings, pinned or open tabs, extensions and cookies.
- Firefox: favorites or bookmarks, saved passwords, addresses and browsing history.
- Internet Explorer: favorites or bookmarks, saved passwords, search engines, history and home page.
- Safari: unattended import is no longer available on modern macOS because of Full Disk Access behavior.
The source list matters when designing a policy test. A setting documented for Chrome does not automatically prove identical behavior for Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari. Test each source and category your users actually have access to, particularly when a policy page names only one source browser.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which operating systems, Edge versions and profiles are covered?
Most datatype policies support Windows and macOS and are marked unsupported on Android and iOS. The minimum Edge versions differ: the core first-run and history, favorites, saved-password and payment controls begin at Edge 77; browser settings begins at Edge 78; open tabs at Edge 79; cookies and extensions at Edge 81; and recurring Chrome prompts through ImportOnEachLaunch at Edge 104.
Profile behavior can be more restrictive than the operating-system label suggests. Many datatype controls are documented as per-profile and as not applying to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account. ImportOnEachLaunch has a different scope: Microsoft describes it as not per-profile, applicable to Microsoft-account profiles, and not applicable to Microsoft Entra ID profiles.

Consequently, validate the effective setting in the same sign-in type and device configuration used in production. A policy that appears correct on a local test profile may not govern an Entra ID profile or a profile created under a different management context.
How can I verify that the import block is effective?
Verification should cover policy ingestion, first-run behavior and manual import, rather than relying on the presence of a configured object in Group Policy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check policy status in Edge. On a managed test device, open
edge://policyand confirm that each configured policy is listed with the expected value and source. - Test first run. Use a fresh Edge profile or an approved test account and confirm that the import section is absent when
AutoImportAtFirstRunis set to DisabledAutoImport (4). - Test a later launch. After changing
ImportOnEachLaunch, fully restart Edge and check that the recurring Chrome-import prompt no longer appears. - Test the manual route. Open Settings > Profiles > Import browser data and check each category that your policy is intended to block. Use harmless test data rather than production credentials or cookies.
- Test the actual account type. Repeat the checks with the Microsoft-account, Microsoft Entra ID and local-profile arrangements used by your organization, because scope differs between policies.
If edge://policy shows an unexpected value, check whether a mandatory policy is being overridden by another management source, whether the device received the latest policy refresh, and whether the installed Edge version supports the setting. If the policy is correct but a prompt remains, confirm that Edge was restarted after changing ImportOnEachLaunch.
What are the common configuration mistakes?
- Disabling only first-run import: users can still reach the manual import page unless datatype controls are also disabled.
- Using recommended policies for enforcement: recommended settings are user-overridable and do not meet a strict prohibition.
- Forgetting the restart:
ImportOnEachLaunchdoes not dynamically refresh. - Assuming one policy covers every source: several current policy descriptions are Chrome-specific, while history explicitly lists multiple source browsers.
- Ignoring account scope: Microsoft-account and Microsoft Entra ID profiles can receive different treatment, especially for
ImportOnEachLaunch. - Testing only a desktop platform: Android and iOS are marked unsupported for most datatype policies, so mobile management requires a separate control decision.
What does this control set prove, and what does it not prove?
These policies provide a documented way to control Edge’s first-run, recurring-launch and datatype import workflows. They do not establish how often organizations experience browser-data imports: no authoritative published statistic identifies the prevalence of such imports, the number of affected organizations or the frequency of incidents.

A security-hardening rationale exists for stopping recurring prompts because imported browser profiles can contain credentials and other sensitive information, but that rationale is a recommendation rather than a Microsoft product requirement. Base the final policy set on the data categories, source browsers, profiles and operating systems your organization actually permits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling Edge imports remove data that was already imported?
No. These settings govern whether Edge can perform specified import actions; they are not documented as a deletion or cleanup mechanism. Remove existing favorites, passwords, cookies or other profile data through a separate, approved administrative process if remediation is required.
Do import policies also disable Edge synchronization?
The documented controls target browser-data import workflows. They should not be treated as a substitute for separate synchronization or account-management policies; evaluate those controls independently if synchronized data is part of your threat model.
Can an organization allow favorites while blocking saved passwords?
Yes. The import categories are exposed as separate policies, so an administrator can disable ImportSavedPasswords while leaving ImportFavorites enabled, provided that outcome matches the organization’s data-handling rules.
Why might a policy work for one Edge profile but not another?
Several datatype controls are profile-scoped, and Microsoft documents account-type exceptions. Compare the profile’s sign-in method and the effective entries in edge://policy before treating a different result as a deployment failure.
